Title: Skimmer modified
Post by: Nordsee on July 19, 2012, 10:20:36 am
Has nyone tried this Mod? I saw in last months Model Boats an article on up dating the old "Skimmer" Model by Glynn Guest, Brushless, bigger etc. Well I have a 6 bladed Ducted Fan Unit, 66mm diameter, intended for Speed 400 Motors, I just thought that instead of the propellor which needs a guard etc, how about useing a D/F?  Could place the rudder right behind it, I intend to extend this so there is some water rudder too.Be lower, more compact, will I need to extend the jet outlet to get a better effect, make a jet pipe, can that be a parrallel tube or must it be shaped? Any thoughts or ideas? I will try to take photos as I go along, but don't hold your breath!

If you get the hull the right shape you don't need a water rudder - that defeats the whole point of an airboat.

Somewhere on here, I think, is a post on a rescue boat powered by a steerable ducted fan unit. The idea being there is nothing, water prop or air prop, to get caught in weeds or overhanging vegetation.

Not many replies yet, maybe because it is a Boring Subject? Anyway, here is the pic of the Fan Unit, only 8quid at Conrads,.They do a smaller one too, for Brushless motors

Funnily enough, we were talking about this just today at the club.

One of our members has tried it with a 60mm (I think) dia ducted fan and brushless set up.

It moved, but not very fast at all.
