Title: Southampton tugboat conversion
Post by: kappie on July 19, 2012, 11:20:10 am
Hello members.

Many know that i am building the Fotiy Krylov.
But i wanted to sail with a vessel by the club.
so i decided to buy a tug the Southampton.
I didn't like the accommodation and wheel house.

I had recieved a drawing of the tug Zeeland who had sailed by Wijsmuller
the drawing was i/50 and the hull was just the same.
So as a Wijsmuller fan i decided to make the Zeeland.

Here some pictures of making the conversion

first i copied the drawing and cut it out .

placed it on the hull

When i saw it fit a cut it out of plastic.

I had help of Svitzer where the Zeeland now part of is.
I was a day onboard of the ship so i had the possibility to make many detail pictures.

In the mean time i had open the hull and disconnected the motors from eachother.
Put 2 navy speedcontrollers in so each motor is working at a speedcontroller.
Further i put in a waterpump for the portable fire-unit which can be placed at the towingdeck.

By a modelcarshop i buy a hiab crane.

(http://inlinethumb32.webshots.com/48159/2606221170099737881S600x600Q85.jpg) (http://home-and-garden.webshots.com/photo/2606221170099737881vKgEVg)

the mast is painted wijsmuller blue.

(http://inlinethumb05.webshots.com/49924/2898239760099737881S600x600Q85.jpg) (http://home-and-garden.webshots.com/photo/2898239760099737881lxcbpx)

Here she sails.

The real one has propellors who can turning 360 degrees. But in my vessel there is not much space for placing
Schottels so i am keeping the propellorschaft.

The vessel is turning like the real one.

Here is my hell beater fire-unit.

It is made of the frame of a tankcontainer. I cut out the tank. and placed 2 small engines in it.
Put them together so it likes a big engine hahaha.
Than i placed at the top a fire unit. The pump is under deck and had a connection at the end of the towing deck.

further i had orderd small parts for the wheelhouse.

Here the Zeeland in my garden

So i had now a tug to sail with and in the mean time a am building further to the Fotiy Krylov.

Thanks for the compliment mr Martrin-Admin.

I thought YEAH we make conversions for the Dickie Workboat why not for the Southampton.
The Hull is good.

and because i wanted to sail quick i let the hull te hull.

maybe i will do an other one and try than also a conversion for the hull
The place is to small for a schottel but not for a kort nozzle.
the propellor will than in the middle of a "pipe" and every "pipe" at a chanel
than you can also sidewards like the real one with schottels  the manoeuvrability is than much bigger.

For my "southapton" i wanted something to tow.

I saw by shopping a plastic box for under your bed for putting things in.

I had a crane and a box for some cake.

I had some stickerfolie black and red what i put on the box.

and this is what i made of it.

The wheelhouse will also be made in scale 1:100 so it can be towed by the Fotiy Krylov.

Very ingenious.  Will you have to load it down to cover the buoyancy ?

Yes,

I put one big road-stone in the back and in the front a big accu. I will put lights in the crane.
