Title: Southampton aka Wyeforce
Post by: Stormbringer on July 27, 2012, 10:58:28 pm
hi folks this is my rtr Southampton with some modifications and a bit detail added
on getting this model i took the stock radio gear out leaving the motors , shafts , props and rudders and replaced with 2.4ghz 5 ch rx , 2 viper 15 amp speed controllers and a decent known type rudder servo
i also added nav and deck lights just need to change name to wyeforce add some crew and build something for it to tow and its complete well for me anyway :)
must admit tho out the box it looked pretty good

What kind of lights have you used.
They look very small. Did you place them in the original "dummy"lights

im using these lights in her , i painted the leds black and scraped the paint away where i wanted the light to come through , also carefully bent the shrinktube on the diodes to look like the mast standoffs that the dummy lights sat on , they are 5mm leds with a resister incorporated into them and with a 4.8v 2500 nihm aa pack they last in excess of 12 hours  :-))

ps i didnt use the light on off controller tho

here you go Kappie
i took 1 wire 1 side and other wire opposite side of mast to rear and tucked it into the space behind the mast and painted them black to match mast

Nice tug! I'll post up some pictures of mine once she's finished. I'm probably not going to as much effort as you. Don't think I'll add lights etc. you have done a good job of yours. Any photos of the inards (motor, batt, esc etc)?

thx  :-))
sorry no pics of innards at moment :(
but i kept the stock motors , gearbox and running gear
i did take the black tray the rx and esc sat on out and used the blister pack of an rx package double sided sticky taped in place with a bit of styrene sheet cut to sit on top of the blister pack and rest on hull sides as well , used 2 viper 15 amp esc's 1 on each side of the styrene sheet with the rx sitting in middle of them again using double sided sticky  , they all sit directly below the front part of the forward hatch and the battery sits just in front of the motors on edge and its held in place by the deck supports and hull webbing and can be removed without taking the deck off , it is a bit fiddly getting battery out and in through the hatch tho
hope that helps
looking forward to seeing your pics when its done  :-))

What have u done with the aerial? If u reroute it and hide it away does it affect signal distance too much?

i converted it to 2.4ghz and the ariel lead pokes through the front hatch by about 2" and is hidden by the super structure ( drilled a small hole in hatch and stuck in a small length of the tubing the ariel runs up )
if your using the standard 27mhz rx you can route the ariel up throght the wheelhouse and up the back of the mast to hide it , affect on range is negligable , i had my ariel ran like that fore i converted it to 2.4 and tacked the ariel in with a little drop of superglue at top and middle of mast and drilled a small hole in wheelhouse at base of mast

When towing make sure you have lights on the tow. Dealt with an accident years ago when fast motor boat passed between Wyerip and her unlit tow. Two killed. Hate to see the same thing happen on your pond!
