INTERNATIONAL MODEL BOAT SHOW 9TH TO 11TH NOVEMBER 2012
All hands are on deck preparing for The International Model Boat Show which is returning to the Warwickshire Exhibition Centre
(near Leamington Spa) from 9th 11th November 2012.
Visitors are guaranteed a packed hall with over 600 models on the club and society displays, demonstrations plus attendance by
leading specialist suppliers. Over 3000 visitors are expected to attend the show which is now regarded as one of the premier
model boat show in the UK.
There are 27 confirmed clubs, societies and demonstrations attending this unique exhibition with some of the finest marine models
on show. Visitors will also have the opportunity to purchase whatever they need from the vast range of products offered by the
comprehensive selection of over 20 specialist suppliers, everything from a single anchor to an entire kit.
The excellent and varied display of models from early warships to modern power boats and ships is complemented by action on the
large boating pool. The Surface Warship Association will again lead a poignant sailing tribute at the poolside during the 2 minutes
silence on Remembrance Day and for younger visitors there will be childrens hour at the poolside between 1pm and 2pm over
the weekend.
To celebrate the Queens Diamond Jubilee year the amazing Royal Spithead Naval Review will be on display. The display, by Jack Snary,
comprises nearly 600 1:1200 scale model ships covering 3000 years of maritime history, from ancient Egypt to the latest Type 45
destroyer HMS Daring. Both Britains Royal and merchant Navies are represented, as well as vessels from 25 other nations. At the
exhibition Jack will be giving live demonstrations showing the construction methods involved in scratch building a model in 1:1200 scale
from plastic.
New this year will be a demonstration by John Hanson who will be showcasing his skills in construction using aluminium. Aluminium
can be pre-bent to shape and when heat is applied will keep its shape without adverse tension and can produce realistic looking models.
The prestigious Society Shield, which is voted for by the clubs and societies themselves, will again be awarded to the best club display
in the show along with the Best Boat in Show award which is awarded to the model receiving the most votes from visitors to the
show.
As the ONLY 3 day marine modelling exhibition dedicated to all aspects of marine modelling this is an event not to be missed
- book your tickets NOW to take advantage of the specially discounted rates which is only available until 31st October (see www.modelboatshow.co.uk (http://www.modelboatshow.co.uk) or call 01926 614101 to order).

It is on Subject Larry, It is a Tradition that if possable members of Mayhem all meet up at Lunch time around the Blackheath Stand and try to get £20.00 out of Phils tight hands whilst eating cake.. an annual event at this show, If you want to meet members this is where it all happens.. :}
Larry R.
-
Good Morning Larry
, Thank you you for clearing that up , how are you keeping ?......ARE YOU GOING ............have three BOBBYS in the family Larry...... :-))
-
I live close to the show and attended the Model Engineering event a couple of weeks ago. Since then it's hardly stopped raining. The car park is grass with hard roadways.
Parking spaces were boggy at the ME event and a few people had to be towed out. I would guess that the same will be the case at the boat show. It would pay to bring a bit of carpet to aid traction and remember that when the wheels spin, pushing the right foot down harder is not the solution. There were a few lead footed people who struggled before. Better still, bring a few friends who can push if there is a problem. If you have a rear-wheel drive car, load the boot with purchases (sorry dear, I needed the weight to get off the grass) to help!
At least the hard roadways mean once you get moving, exiting the car park is easy. Being prepared is sensible though.
Phil

Good Morning Larry
, Thank you you for clearing that up , how are you keeping ?......ARE YOU GOING ............have three BOBBYS in the family Larry...... :-))
Bobby Junior is fine, still waiting to be completed %% again but nothing new there. No not going this year, what with the price of petrol I had to choose between the Blackpool show or the Leamington Spa show show and I was told I was going to Blackpool so I could sit for over 2hrs going through the lights " What Fun" !!. I prefere the Spa show but SWMBO stated her case.. <*<
-
All this talk of cake has decided me.
I'll be there Saturday - save me some cake Ken.
This time I am going to make a list too ....
I always get home and find I have missed buying something.
Dave
-
ooh !! a list is imperative. it's so easy to be confused by all the wares. :}
Talking of cakes. But I've started eating them. {-)
Ken
-
I have to say that with luck the carpark should have dried out, will let all know when I arrive Thursday, not only did I have my stand at the Midlands ME I did then spend a few happy hours after (and sometimes during) the show towing poor modelers out of the mud.....so at least I had a street cred landy when i got home as it was (and still is ) covered in mud.
I have a lounge full of boats at the moment ready to load....might need a bigger roof rack....
Oh and Kenny....bring the other half of the cake I don't mind (its the cherry I want)
Right back to welding the £20 note into its box {-)
-
If anyone wants to be paid to spend the morning in the car park:

You could spend the wages on model boat stuff in the afternoon!
Just a thought...
Phil
-
Well the Boats are packed labels made, cakes packed all raring to go,first part of journey tomorrow, down to Ma and Pa's then down to Warwick to set up on Thursday.Hope Phil has packed the acrow props to support the table the Happy Hunter will be on
Dave
-
I will be there on Friday - with the mem-sahib.
Not sure how to introduce her to the weird odd distinctive flavour of Mayhem members, or how to start a long (but distant) relationship with Phil's mythical note
andrew
-
Well we are down in Twycross only an hour away all EXCITED now ha ha Oh and we bought some proper WELSH CAKES as well.............so Phil you had better have some Before KELLY scoffs the lot
Dave
-
"proper WELSH CAKES" - Hmmmm, I have a very high bench mark for Welsh cakes Stav.... my good friend Ariane (about 168 years old ) makes them for me locally, my limit is about 14 per sitting! <*<
-
So me thinks we got to keep you some then :-)) :-)) :-))

Hi all my cake lovers/Mayhemers,
Hope you are all having a good time. It sounds like you are !!!
Thank you for all of the lovely comments. It makes standing in the kitchen baking all day Wednesday worth while. Like to keep you all fed.
Anyway take care everyone. Some pictures would be nice please.
Congratulations to Phil and Steph on becoming man and wife. You kept that quiet lol didn't even get an invite. lol
regards to you all

I'm stuffed. all them cakes and Luton sweetys.
I have just got back from a great day at the show. Met up with the happy maried couple from Blackheath club. Stavros had to buy Kelly a boat as she seems to have got the bug, however Stav now has to let Kelly into to his sacred shed. Not good mate. {-)
Good to meet you Mick from Redruth. Nice to see Martin even if his shirt was very mellow. Klunk is now making red jam sponge cakes useing his blood from his poorly finger & Stavros holding the poor lass up who nearly passed out when she saw Klunks blood %%
Oh & I put me hand in me pocket and got one or two things for my new project as well.
All in all not a bad day out. Sorry I didn't take any pics I was to busy eating cakes and talking.
-
Look what my wife made when i was at the show. Lovely :-))
-
Quite a good show, although it seemed that most of the boats on show have been there every year. Quite quiet this morning - I got all I wanted without any queues or hassle, even found a seat in the restaurant :-) It was good to see one or two new traders this year.
Car park very well organised also even if it was VERY wet :-))

Just got in......man do my feet hurt from all that walking around!
Another great day at the show..... I'll start posting photos as soon as the fire out from the sloes of my feet!
Only 1,676 photos and videos to sort through..... :o

Car park very well organised also even if it was VERY wet (http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/Smileys/Tug/thumbup.gif)
Yes, doing their effective best in circumstances not of their making. Most cars seem to have got out OK but there was one being towed when I left.
Just need to clean my shoes now...
Colin

Didn't bother with the photos that much, as by 2pm Martin had got over 1000... For today only {-)
So then chaps, a photo diary of what today was all about...

I would just like to add that it was good to meet up with some fellow mayhemers, and put faces to names! I finally got round to visiting the cake stand, and was immediately upon introducing myself, and promising not to bite the hand that feeds me,was given a cake.It was a Mr Kipling special, and very tasty it was,but I thought it was a mince pie! What a swizz, wot no cake? definitely a better class of proper cake on the L.B.E.S. Stand! I may even organise some Cornish Cream Teas next year (Martin is paying!) and if you believe either of those last two statements, please book in to your nearest respite home.
Oh and before I get accused of hijacking the thread,I would like to say that there were also some incredible models on display,a credit to all concerned. It was also good to see the many traders and their wares.Being able to actually see what you want, and getting new ideas from the products on display,is worth the visit alone.
We have nothing like this down our way, now that Weymouth, and Shepton Mallet Shows have folded,so come on you organisers, bring something to replace it,to a super venue Westpoint Arena Exeter.I am sure that you would get the support to make it a success.
Mick F
-
Nice to eventually meet you mick, yes plenty to see, and yes exeter would be a fine venue. But talk to the manufactures and traders and see what there views are.baloo(martin)
-
A great show. So nice to meet with you all and put faces to names. I even bought things I didn't know I wanted until I got there. (had to have them)
I thought the car park attendants did a fine job in the mire. My wife wouldn't let my shoes into the house when she saw them. {-) {-)
Martin, can you look out for a picture you might have of the Fairmile D on the warships stand by the main door as I forgot my camera and would love to see her again for closer inspection. Far too many details to remember. :}
One day left to go chaps. Well worth having a look.

Did you notice it has the Queen's head on both sides? %)
-
Well there will either be no photo or three of us in our happy caravan workshop making 'Sea' boats (urchin and nymph). Phil's winning cos I'm taking so long doing this. Mind you he's not hindered by reading instructions or safety measures when it comes to using super glue. I recognise that I have a lot to learn!
Not sure if I'm coming in tomorrow as I heard that all the lemon curd cake has gone.
And so has Phil's 20 pound note (and Martin, I take credit for extracting that!) :-))

This one Ken? [/color]
Yes indeed. Thank you Martin, now I have something to aim for.
Thank you.

Hi all,
A great show - beautiful models - a good variety of trade stands. Many thanks to the organisers.
Dave.
-
Well it was really nice to meet Ken at last. The show was certainly well supported and I got everything except a compass cutter (sold out). The nice gent by the door gave me some litho plate too. :embarrassed: I had to exit the grass a certain way and that just forced me to go the wrong way around - my apologies to those other motorists. Friendly types - they all waved at me O0
Dave

Still working through the photos..... ( I try to take a photo of every boat at the show... which always seems like a good idea at the show! ) %%
This was usual, anyone know anything about her or her class?

What are all the fitting around the gun?
I believe those would be action-ready ammunition for the gun. Early TBDs and Destroyers often had ready shells handy when cleared for action.
-
.... so one stray piece of shrapnel near the deck gun and it's; "goodnight Vienna!" ? ? ?
-
Those of you who went to Warwick must have noticed the Classic Ship model stand which was selling Chinese made static models at several hundred pounds or more each. I just wonder if they made any sales. They were very nice examples but maybe they were at the wrong show where most visitors are interested in constructing their own rather than buying completed models.
I was quite tempted by the smaller resin 1:1250 models which I collect but on close examination I felt they were not quite up to the standard I would have liked.
Colin
-
:-)
-
Like the waiste coat :-))
-
Well done Martin! The larger cased models are indeed very good and would make an attractive buy if you have a connection with the original vessel.
Still, you can see why people are put off scratch building!
Colin
-
Yes I saw that stand. At first I thought very nice but upon closer examination. He had a model there for £2000+ there was paint blobs glue marks paint drips on the hand rails. VERY VERY poor if you are asking £2000+
As for the 1:1250 models very poor.ok the price was from £20 but I would rater may more and get quailty saying that his Queen Mary was so poor it made the Triang version like Muesum qualty. i dought if he did much business.
john
-
Yes, that Queen Mary was not good at all. I was interested in the Empress of Japan at £43 painted but the coloured squares on the funnels were too big. I thought I might paint the funnels buff but on looking closely at the model the portholes along the sides were not well defined. Scherbak can get very fine definition from resin but they are very expensive and only do modern ugly cruise ships at around £200. Otherwise white metal is usually the better option.

-
Well thats the show over.It was my first time there, and I must say I have come away most impressed. There really were some superb models on display. What a friendly lot of people as well! I made a few more acquaintences, and shared a few stories, and cakes also! Thanks to everyone concerned, who made it such a success, organisers as well as exhibitors.I hope I can come again next year.Perhaps the rivallry over the great cake giveaway will get even more competetive!
The only comment I can make further,is that 45 minutes after the show closed is "where did it all go?"
Good fun,
Thanks,

i would just like to say that i fully understand the distinguised member getting upset about the hijacking of this thread with rediculous comments about cake. totally unnecessary and not at all on subject this is meant to be about a boat show. to redress the balance as it were here are some nice revues from the saturday from the a team boatyard team team thingy.
first of all was franks steak burger.
this one is the gammon and egg alan destroyed. you can see he's had a few too many of these lately
(http://flic.kr/p/dsyMrK)
this one is the fish and chips chris had my second choice
(http://flic.kr/p/dsyMxk)
rather nice steak paul and son adam had. not one my favorites but adam massacred this is very short order so assume rather nice
(http://flic.kr/p/dsyMCD)
finally have to show the very yummy scampi and chips that myself and the suave pete had. very nice always my first choice
(http://flic.kr/p/dsyMGT)
just to finish off adams side order of onion rings. not really a meal i know but excellent.
would have posted pictures of our puddings but involved quite a large amount of chocolate fudge naughty word. some with cream some with ice cream.
hope you enjoyed my non cake posting. cake is the spawn of the devil and don't you all forget it.
phil (atboatyard) (i'm the serious cake hating one)

i would like to add i have pictures of all these meals but seem unable to post them probably due to be a forum numpty so if anyone wants to see them they will have to teach me how to post them first
phil
Where are they hosted please

It is rumoured that now Kelly has done calendar girls, that certain distinguished mayhemmers are planning there own version. Of the full Monty!

Great photos - sounds like a fun few days! Looking forward to the next group of photos.

A great show, lots of variety, tea cakes, chocolate cakes, bakewell tarts and of course best in show Deb's Bread Pudding
I do belive there were some boats there too...... {-) {-) {-)
No really some very fine models and good club stands, congrats to King Lear for winning the best club stand (I voted for you)
Now at home time to start finishing the boat I got from Vintage models (plus a few fittings for the fire boat) not to mention all the bits and bobs from Mac's Mouldings (he who now has the £20 note) that need to go onto Steph's fishing boat......
Still I have until mayhem to finish it..(unless she tells me different) <*<

Guys, this subject was funny once and no doubt will be for years to come to those few that partake.
I and several others who use this forum are a bit brassed of with this old chestnut. When I look into Warwick show postings I hope to see Martin,s excellent pictures. He always manages to capture the stuff I seem to miss at the shows.
It is beginning to seem more than a bit cliquey on here.Is it not supposed to be the biggest virtual boat club open to all or are we non "cake club" members getting in the way.
Sorry if you don't like it but that's my opinion .I do not intend to offend anyone but if you want to carry on this cake love-in together get a room!!

Heard some dire reports about this Warwick show while at the Telford IPMS, so was glad that I did'nt waste time and money on attending. Certainly no cake or other love in's at Telford, just three massive halls filled with models, traders and people, (young, elderly, male, female and everything else inbetween) from all over the World.
LB
PS: I forgot to add that there were some fantastic entries in the competition side most of which put the examples seen at most other (marine) models shows in the deep shade.

I feel so sorry for all the cake haters, but some of us have caring wives.
Myself, i have one in a million.
What you seem to forget is that there is as much hard work and love going into my wives cakes as most of us put in to our models.
She makes them for most of the shows i do,for myself and my fellow mayhemers to enjoy.
Maybe you should come along and try some.
Also i see this website for people who enjoy life.
90% of people on there death bed realise that they could of had a happier life,as happiness is a state of mind.
Lets not wait until we get to this point of our lives to be happy and enjoy it,lets all start now !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Debbie most days is in serious pain with arthritis which she has had for 30 years now,and for someone of 51 years old you could say she was dealt with a crap hand.
She puts a big smile on her life and gives it 100%, and puts love into everything she does.
So maybe the cakes are just as important as our boats

I myself go to the shows to be sociable, to see the many friends and acquaintances I have made through modelling over the years. There were some admirable models there, as there is at every show.
At nearly 21 years of age now, if the outlook is ending up and miserable and boring as some of you lot are I may as well go stick my head in the oven.
Lighten up. You know who you are.

The club stands were to a high standard, I feel there may have been more than a little competition between some stands to see who could put on the best spread! All for the greater good I feel.

Someone has finished a SS Ohio!

Some more club stands...

Nice to see an Egyptian T34 tank in an American LCT, war booty?

I may have had a hand in the Type 45, which explains why it keeps appearing. here the 'usual suspects' are giving it a once over and checking all the rust marks are in the right place...

I didn't get any cake, however I did see the preparations that went into the baking...from miles away in fact :}

i liked the photo of the old RC gear (unbuiltnautilus IMG. 8503). i would hate to have one of those hanging around my neck for the day. as light as tin and lead could make them. arent we spoilt with alloys and plastic now days.
-
even since i started in modelling in the early eighties things have improved greatly , i remember having to save pocket money for months to buy my first two chanel futaba medallion 27mhz set , today i still spend around the same money for my radio sets , but have FIVE OR SIX chanels and non interferance 2.4 ghz !
