Title: Solder types and temp
Post by: Martin (Admin) on August 05, 2012, 08:07:50 pm

I'm only used to electronic type soldering .... done a bit of low temp brazing but that's abut it.
I need to have another go at soldering ship railings (groan!), what options do I have for soldering?

(Railing will be brass stations or all steel.)

Hi Martin, I always silver solder my brass stantions. I have found 0.5 silver solder is ideal for rails. Here is a link to the company that I get all of my silver solder from, I have used this company for about two years and I cannot fault there service. :-))

I totally agree, brilliant company which will supply small amounts of silver solder, flux etc, how to pages and they even do a small brazing hearth for about 35 quid, and postage is free to boot. :-)) :-)) :-))

They also do the old lead, low heat  solder still.

Check their silver solder paste in a syringe, better than chasing pallions (look it up) and dobs of flux about.

  Regards Ian.

Don't soft solder first and then decide you should have silver or hard soldered.

I recently watched some silver soldering being done - having seen that I'm not scared to try it now.

Just to confirm...
I just add a blob of the paste to the joint to be soldered and then heat it untill the solder flows and makes the joint?
