has anyone found the best way of cleaning dirty nitro engines, de greasing them ect

I use Fairy power spray - but don't leave it on aluminium too long (over night), it tends to turn it white.

Hi All,
There's a chap selling an engine cleaning product on e bay.
Not a recommendation, just letting you know.
He says that it works great and is better than products available from the model shops. He is only charging for the info, and if I remember correctly a sample of the product, which I think is a hybrid of readily available cleaning products.

What sort of time scale would you suggest leaving the powerspray on?
I was thinking of using the Antifreeze method to clean up my IC Engines but the thought of stripping everything down and removing the bearings on some of them has put me off a bit plus I'm not fussed on leaving a hotplate running overnight even if it is in a shed or garage. Strange things happen at night :o

I always used to use Nitromores or some such thing, Wonder if the reason Martin has such nice soft hands is that he cleans so many engines , and no I am not talking from experience of his hands before so bright wag says it.

I spray on the Fairy power spray ( it's a sort of gel really ), make sure all the surfaces covered by rubbing it in with your fingers or a small paint brush. Leave it for 10 - 30 minutes, scrub with a tooth brush and wash it off under a tap and washing up soap. It may take 2 or 3 goes to get all the gunk off. I also use wooden lolly sticks and a glassfibre pen for real stubborn areas.

When I started on the nitro -cars age 15, 16.... I have used my fathers gasoline which he kept in the garage. Unfortunately he was a bit fed up when he found, that it was empty when he run out of gasoline one day....
Mustn`t be necessarily the chemical decision......

The former owner of Paisley Model Shop recommended Fairy to me after he'd seen the state of my BMKW K75 bike. I bought some on the way home to use on the ally engine and transmission castings but it never got as far as the shed - 'er indoors nicked it and used it in the kitchen! But he did say it was just the thing for glo engines.

I swear by GUNK for cleaning all the crap off etc, paint it on, leave it for a few minutes and then wash it off. Works a dream on everything fuel/grease/oil related so far!

Not sure what She uses. I will ask the wife in the morning and post the answer here. She always gets my motors nice and clean.

She said I should wind my neck in and keep on using kerosene and WD40 like I always have done. Also plenty of elbow grease. A bit of Jif (Cif?) on the hard to shift stains with an old toothbrush.

though not an IC operator, perhaps if anyone has done a strip down and clean, perhaps do a write-up on it for the new How-to section?
