not often a beauty like this comes up .........but not for the faint hearted.....remember a vicar building this over about a 100 or more months in model boats some years ago.

kept me buying the magazine for years and inspired me to go and have a visit to the ship in Bristol.

You can always reduce the price but not put it up in retrospect....!
If someone really wants it, they'll snatch your hand off, and you laughing all the way to the bank.

Looking on 'Crowd Funding sites, it's called a "stretch goal".

Oh that Paddler is so tempting, always fancied adding one to the fleet. I tried for many years to get someone to sell me his model of the P.S Ryde but he just wouldn't let it go.

While having a sneaky liking for bikes, I gave up on them after getting a four wheel license.  Bikes tend to be cold and draughty and it hurts when you come off.
I got my domestic music device about 1973 from Laskeys in Preston.  Garrard must have built well - its on its third pickup and its second drive belt.  Apart from the tangential arm, nothing flash - it simply works well.

Hey Malcolm,  i used to work for Laskeys 'back in the day', in the repair workshop in Burnt Oak, Edgware.

I'm surprised this model Hydrofoil (http://r.ebay.com/xxfGAb) hasn't gone, nothing to do with me but it's been listed for a few days now and just had the price reduced.

It was a crappy thin shaft to start with, rusted after first use.
I just upgraded to a standard M4 shaft.

Hi all, have alook at this, but not sure if it will come up as it is now withdrawn

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Radio-Controlled-Kit-Scratch-built-Model-Boats-Model-Railway-Die-Cast-Dinky-/112974808704?_trksid=p2047675.l2557&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&nma=true&si=j%252FFmNIr6jxo9TUFTV7BlcTlSk8Y%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc

There was a bid on this and after looking at it I asked the seller what I might be bidding on, there's about a dozen model boats on view.  i got a response rather more than expected saying there was an auction elsewhere.

2 days later I got a part threatening warning from ebay  about my trading on ebay!

After contacting ebay they apologised to me, but the other guy is being naughty!

I think from reading the original add, a few days ago  the 3 quid start price was for registration to become a bidder at the auction and also  for a catalogue..........although I have never seen one advertised on eBay before it is quite common for auction houses to charge for registration and catalogue, in that way, should you bid and win, they sneakily keep your card details and charge you for the goods won whether you pick them up or not.

also eBay are not joking..........I offered to pay a cash price for something if I picked up personally.........only in st annes.........and got banned for 2 weeks for trying to deal off site..................so not only mayhem I get banned from lol.

i get tired of people phoning me saying they want to sell their deceased partners boats, i arrive, ask them what they want me to do with them. sell them is the most obvious answer. then they they start on about that they have been on ebay checking the prices out and telling me how much they want for each boat they have. one recently had a micro magic. early version where the white hull had gone yellow, grotty dirty sails no radio gear, mast and boom both bent. was told she saw one on fleabay for £400 so they thought £300 was a fair price. when i pointed out and showed them i could pick up a brand new one for £150 they were not happy.  then I was asked to do it up and put a radio in it at my expense then sell it! ludicrous.

Hi All, there is a Bassett lowke 1466 Marine electric motor as the drive unit.  A nice one of those went for around £200 on ebay a year ago.  I have one in use now and it runs very nicely in my Sea Jay copy.  It would chug along but no great speed, I think it is a motor gun boat not ASRL.  The mighty midget was used in several different rudder actuators, but nice to see.

Hi there are 2 sets of plans available for the Monitor.  One is a very simple one and the other I think from David Metcalf and was spread over several magazine issues.  The wide excrescence (for buoyancy) around the ship is at water level so that it was an early (1915) shallow draft  'Litoral' ship used for shore bombardment.  The class can differ with the numbers depending which big gun was available and I think they were 7000 tons or so and travelled very slowly about 7 knots.  If anyone has better knowledge feel free to correct me.

Ooooooooh, if EVER there was a model yacht I lusted after it was a 'Blue Leopard'!

Unfortunately there's some legal reason why the kit can't be produced now, but I can still dream I guess.
Title: Re: Re: Stuff on Ebay.... Perhaps not such a bargain...?
Post by: roycv on June 13, 2018, 01:22:41 PM
Hi I remember talking to Mr. Dean when the kit first came out.  I think the design is by Camper and Nicholson and he said that he was allowed only to produce the hull as per their drawings.  I think the same was true for Dufresne and Melita. Mostly model yacht hulls have their displacement adjusted to compensate for the scale.  Apparently C & N would not allow this.
Several years before Deans were involved I contacted C & N and asked if I could buy / have drawings to build one Blue leopard model boat.  I had come across the boat as featured in Yachting Monthly magazine. The cost was more than I earned in a week and that allowed me to build only one model, so I did not follow it through.
Although full size yachting magazines sometimes show hull lines these are rarely the finished product, just an idea of the layout etc.
The problem was to get a greater displacement into the model hull and Deans have done this by making a very fat keel fin.
Maybe it would have been kitted differently now but there was a very large transparent panel that screwed down to seal the insides almost like a submarine
This kit is not a very easy kit to build, I looked and decided against it and there are not many completed ones.  I spoke to one builder at Pangbourne model boat weekend and he said "never again".  However Mr. Dean was there and I asked if I could sail the Blue Leopard he had on his stand and he gave me the Tx and I sailed her, she went very well and of course is most impressive on the water.

Hi again I first saw the Blue Leopard kit at the old Sandown Park exhibition, and Mr. Dean knew I was interested in doing a review for a magazine and so I was given free rein to look at it.  The editor at the time declined to review the model so it never happened.  I don't think Deans made another yacht kit?
I know they bought in some Russian boats for a short time but these were not much good.
I had tried selling them myself from another source in ready made condition but they were crude and troublesome.
I think I reviewed the Kyosho Fairwind yacht as a consolation, mostly you get to keep the models reviewed but in the case of the Fairwind it was wanted by a Director, so I had a quick sail which went well and then delivered it to Sandown Park.
The fastest yacht I reviewed was the Libera Ocean with the right wind conditions it gets up and planes with nearly half the boat out of the water, you have to see it to believe it but it was traded a while back.
I have kept the Amati Endeavour (1:35 scale) kit this was a static to RC conversion, not for the feint hearted!  This is the only reviewed kit I have retained.

It will be the first kit I've ever had and certainly the first with wood etc.

I've seen a video of the old girl going along at quite a lick! Seems like it can go surprisingly fast for what it is, rather like the Graupner pegasus III and other similar vessels. Between that and the looks of the thing I was in love!

I will probably want to run it on modest outrunner motors for a cheap but gutsy power source. Maybe incorporate differential mixing for steering to supliment the rudder.

I'll probably sell on the brushed motors and TX/RX combo to make funds for the parts I want. Seems like there are no fittings either but I guess I can buy whatever little bits I want really to make it look pretty.

I'm sure in a week or so there will be a new build thread with me needing lots of help and hand holding, most of my RC experience is with cars and trucks so these wooden kits are very new and alien to me!

Unusual - ?????

USS Spry PG64 - A very unusual radio model corvette

"The model is a fairly accurate, scale model of USS Spry PG64, converted from the 1:72 Revell kit. Drive is a standard 540 motor via a brass prop and she sails for a fair length of time at scale speed on 6 volts. There are plenty of photos on navsource for you to compare the accuracy both of the build and the camouflage system.
I've never found another conversion like this one, so it does stand out on the pond. The main 4" and 3" guns are scratch built as are the US style depth charge throwers and racks etc.
Unusually, the battery is installed through the bridge so she should cope with a bit of rough weather, rather like the real thing.
Price includes everything except the receiver and transmitter."

Lend-Lease worked both ways.  Those that were transferrederted to the USN and USCG were re-armed to suit not having to defend against aircraft (Luftwaffe raids were unlikely in the western Atlantic) and got other equipment to conform to US operating practices and their standard armaments.  Probably included an ice cream machine in the galley.
When Revel first brought the Corvette, it was as USS Saucy, with alternative instructions for Snowberry and left over bits on the sprues for Bluebell.

A really unusual conversion would be one of those that the German Navy operated.

Hi Malcolm,

While you're probably right about the the AA effectiveness of the 3"/50 gun and the 4 Oelikons of the USN against the MkVIII 2pdr and 2 Oerlikons of the RN Flowers, the question that Martin raised in the first instance is the use of the word "unusual"
As I put in my initial reply, at the time of build (2014) I found no other model, apart from one from JH, on the web of a non-Saucy USN corvette which is not post-full yard refit of an ex-RN original. The only similar one was based on the RCN type with the higher bridge structure.

Since then, I've kept a cursory look around but in the absence of evidence to the contrary there's "xxxxx" all I can consider :embarrassed:
Cheers
Tony

O0  interestingly looking over the wikipedia listings , they all seem to be RN designations & non actually built directly for the USN , and quite a few other countries used them too . . .

If you look at the navsource lists, some of the Canadian ones were built directly for the USN under contract and not via the RCN . PG90 was built for the USN as USS Caprice and then transferred to the RN under lend-lease.

Not a big conversion to HMS General Wolfe.  General Wolfe was one of the ships that carried the largest piece of ordinance ever sortied by the Royal Navy.  In addition to her twin 12 inch guns and assorted 3 and 6 inch guns General Wolfe mounted a single 18 inch barrel capable of firing 32 miles.  The barrel was in a semi trainable mount aimed to the Starboard which meant that if she was to be used for shore bombardment in Europe she could only fire while sailing north or east.

You're missing out the end of the story Tail,
In 1921 Wolfe's sister ship Lord Clive carried a triple 15" turret instead of the single 18" in trials to test gunfire against the hulk of SMS Baden. There is a pic in the April 22nd 1921 edition of The Engineer (See Graces Guide)
The pic is the 18" gun being shipped in 1917.

It was a weird kind of recycling using guns off other warships.  Unbelievably, the 18" BL barrels had been meant for a cruiser.
The idea of being able to shoot over that distance must have been revolutionary.  32 miles is the same as having the gun in the center of Manchester and being able to land shells in Liverpool or the outskirts of Leeds.  It begs the question about how you report the fall of shot.

The IIIA was in RNAS service in 1917.

Hi Rickles23
The postage is probably the same price !!!
A 30 pound hull from UK 100 pounds postage !!!!
One magazine from France 8 Euros and 60 Euros postage, that, about $108 AU.
They think money grows or trees !!!!!

The IIIA was in RNAS service in 1917.

Indeed it was but was airborne signalling sufficient to the task?  The monitors always show a plethora of wireless aerials. Was airborne wireless telegraphy up to the task at that time?

TID Tug 174 "Bonchurch" has been sold on E-Bay for 12.800 GBP.  I don't think it will shred itself like that painting the other day but the buyer isn't going to be able to take it very far.  It's well and truly stuck in the Sankey Canal in Warrington.

eBay item number:  273487800114

Barely started Free Enterprise V kit - fully complete with motors and radio gear.

Bargain price compared to new!

I have a fear that this is the result of the owner passing away as, when I met him a couple of years ago, he was not well but looked upon life with joy.  Will confirm that later.

If the buyer finds that anything IS missing, we will be happy to supply the missing parts.

-  I know its not much per boat, and all worth the price individually to get a beginner in to model  boat sailing...……..but who would want 10 all in one go...……...he'd be better selling individually...….more chance of a sale.

Maybe this excerpt from the ad would explain it. One static ten remote.

One of the small boats “The flying dolphin” on plinth is a wooden model only. Stands included as shown, there are 10 model boats but only 9 stands.

it says pick up only, but if anyone wants me to pick it up for a tenner petrol money, i'll quite happily spend a day in the city I love and pack it in a box securely so long as you organise a courier yourselves...…….

But please, don't treat me the way the last chap did, that I did a favour for...I lent him two mid splined connecters and 4 universal joints with end fittings for motors/shaft connections ….he stole two universal joints and both mid connecters off me, telling me they both simultaneously "FLEW OFF INTO THE LAKE at Fleetwood" whilst testing his boat, and sent the other two connecters off with the boat he sold......even though he told me he'd removed them. >>:-( <*< :police: ....The police have been informed! I did receive the two uni joints back off the very kind gentleman that was subjected to this man's flagrant ruse, and I thanked him for returning them to me.

I can be and am a kind hearted helpful person as many on here are and my offer is genuine......please treat this offer with respect, and I'll collect the boat from Liverpool if you are too far away yourself. :-)) O0
