Hi,
I see that Augostini have a new part work "Sovereign of the Sea.Looks nice but not for me (haven't finished Bismarck yet and then still have to start HMS Hood).Who on Mayhem will bite the bullet..

Now Deagostini have now started this one TBH I was really shocked at what this model will have cost at the end 139 issuses at £5.99 equals a total of £832.61 sorry to say this but who on earth can afford this much for a static model and I personally wonder how many will actually be finished to shuch a standard that they will be worth anything at the end.

Thats assuming D'agostini actually run the series through to its end and dont pull it a quarter or half way.

Now Deagostini have now started this one TBH I was really shocked at what this model will have cost at the end 139 issuses at £5.99 equals a total of £832.61 sorry to say this but who on earth can afford this much for a static model and I personally wonder how many will actually be finished to shuch a standard that they will be worth anything at the end.

Notwithstanding anything else, one would think that the designers and publishers of this partwork would have done their homework properly on the subject.
HMS SOVEREIGN OF THE SEAS does not ring true. The earliest example of the abbreviation being used is in 1789 when it was used for"HMS Phoenix", well over one hundred years later.
Way before this, prior to 1660, warships were referred to by their full title, The Kings'/Queen's ship and not as His/Her Majesty's Ship, which latter title then followed until the late eighteenth century.
When SOVEREIGN OF THE SEAS emerged from extended refit in 1660, she was then renamed His/Her Majesty's Ship ROYAL SOVEREIGN and not as "HMS". So therefore, SOVEREIGN OF THE SEAS never was "HMS" nor possibly even His/Her Majesty's Ship.
This may seem a trifle pedantic, but it is part of Naval history. :embarrassed:

Many years ago ,,,,think airfix did a kit ,and it was just Sover, of the seas . cant spell , that was a nice kit ,this is a bit more splended and costly ,,not for me ,I too am only so far on the Hood ,have a compleat kit on two others so ? Yarpie nice to hear you my buddy in Cape town was asking about you .

Every time a partwork is mentioned the same old arguments are trotted out.
Cost - It's spread over 2 years so a lot cheaper than 2 pints a week or a packet of fags. Plenty of people manage to afford those. As for "Will it be worth it at the end", well if you are looking for an investment, no it won't. If you build it for fun and enjoy it then it's cheap(ish) entertainment.
Won't finish - Got all the Bismark and half a Hood. Some of these do die after a few issues but lots don't.
Could buy a kit cheaper - Probably could but they won't come with the extensive instructions.
Quality - If it's as good as the Bismark then I wouldn't worry. The etched parts on that are incredibly good. Of course, things could always be better and even with Bismark there are too many cock-ups but we aren't talking some dodgy Chinese ready-built model.
Will I be buying one ? Nope. Too large. Too static. Too much of a dust gatherer. Too fragile. I don't need the instructions so I'll save my money.
I always wonder why they pick the prototypes they do ? I could be up for a tug boat series designed for RC. Instead of doing 1 boat over 135 issues, do three. I bet plenty of people would stay the course for those.

134 issues X £5.99 = £802.66 Plus £1.99 for first issue = £804.65 a bargain.
