Title: Help with boat ID
Post by: Tombsy on August 30, 2012, 11:59:42 pm
This is a still from one of my Dad's 8mm movies he took while with the RCN in the fifties.
I'm curious what the smaller boats are, and I thought it might possibly be in Malta but I'm not sure maybe someone can tell.
The picture is kind of blurry but here's a link to the movie clip as well.
Thanks!

Looks like an HDML, Harbour Defence Motor Launch to me. I will leave it to others to be more precise though..

I agree that it is a Harbour Defence Motor Launch.

I know some were kept on after the war as survey boats.

Don't think its Malta though - seems more mountainous than I remember.

Thanks guys, one of the labels on the movies says "Suva". Would they have had harbour craft like that in Fiji?

Now I'm thinking it could be New Zealand and they did get 15 of the Harbour Defense Launches according to Wickipedia.

Where ever it is looking at the coast it looks very cold with all that snow.

Looks more like Suda in Crete to me and they sometimes have very bouncy water there

Could be Cook Strait, and the outer Marlborough Sounds, top of the South Island, NZ, some of them hills look very familiar.
cheers

Just make out two funnels, so to me it looks like one of the Ford class HDML's built after the war, I think the last RN one was Droxford. New Zealand and Australia plus most of the Dominion navies had some.
