Just wondered if anyone here would know if any planets are visible to the naked eye at the moment? Walkin to the labs at work this morning, about 5AM, we noticed a very bright 'star', when I checked the compass on my phone it was reading 90degrees east. And just below and to the right of it there was another, alot dimmer, and had an almost orange/red tint to it.
Anyone got any ideas if they were just starts or something else?

Hi Mate,
I'm not an expert, but I believe the bright star you saw was probably Venus, and the one with the orange/red tinge is almost certainly Mars. There are other planets visible to the naked eye, Saturn and Jupiter, and with a set of 10 x 50 Binnoculars you should be able to see the rings of Saturn and I have also seen 4 moons of Jupiter.

The bright object was Venus - it's very well placed for early risers at the moment.
"Below and to the right" = perfect description for Procyon, a bright yellow star in Canis Minoris. 1.4 times the mass of the Sun and about 11.5 light years away. :-))

Meant to say thanks, we've got the perfect place to view the stars at work. The plant's in a little village a few miles from town, so very little light pollution, and we've got the choice of either a 100 foot water tower or the skylights in some of the offices about 80 feet up, so are in the highest place for miles, if only I had a telescope!

Try looking for satelites.

Lists them down to quite small magnitude and has special pages for ISS and a few other special ones.
