Plans & Wood Pack Arrived at last...
Now I'm in a quandary, also just received a CHRIS-CRAFT BARREL BACK KIT which I won on e-bay auction.
Now which one do build first?

The SG&K runabout wood pack only comes with the laser cut frames, so more wood to purchase?
The Chris-Craft comes complete with every thing, but looks like a long project.
Also still busy finishing a "ORCA" boat (The boat out Jaws).... So It will some time before I post back {:-{

Progress so far:

Start of frame work, green cutting mat comes in useful keeping frames square to keel while positioning and glue frames one at a time.
I started with the middle frames and worked out over. Note a couple of square heavy metal blocks came in handy keeping frames in position.
The 1/8" square ribs came next. Fitting & gluing central aft, fore deck and hatch straight ribs first (elastic bands came in handy for keeping ribs in place). Doubled check frames and ribs making sure no twisting of frame / keel occurs letting glue dry completely before attempting outer aft & fore deck ribs.

More rubber bands and clamps.

More pics to follow shortly.

Problem with boat frame, gap occurs when building frame see pics
(http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc66/yellow_jr_photos/SG%20and%20K%20Boat%20Buld/FinishedFrame1-1.jpg)

Spindrifter found this on his build as well.

Easily corrected by filling gap (both sides)  with scrapes of wood.

More pics of finished frame:

Order a Robbe Navy Power Set type motor which include the Motor / gear box, prop shaft & propeller complete.
Motor arrived today but  >>:-(  wrong motor assembly was actually delivered.
No fault of the supplier, but Robbe some had manged some how put the totally wrong motor in a wrong box with correct ref/part no I had ordered.

:-))  to Westbourne models who are sending me the correct motor asp.

Hi Roker, I've just ordered the plans and wood kit - can't wait. The Traplet site dosn't seem to give much information about the plans - what length/scale is the boat? After seeing Spindrifts model, I can't decide how to finish the hull ( :police: when the plan arrives!!).

I'll also put some images up once I've started to build - might even finish this one  ;) !

Hi hale21,length is about 33 inch scale is 1/8 th.Beware the the gaps you will find in the frame,s,(both rocker and myself found this).
You will also find the measurements differ between the drawings.
If you need help l have 80 odd photo,s l can either send to you on disc,( if we can come to an arrangement),or l can post them on mayhem a few at a time as you need them.
Clive.
You can keep scratching but the itch is there forever. :-)) :-)) 8)

I'll be camped out by the letter box waiting for the plans!
Thanks for the offer of your photos, let me know the best way get them.

Looks an interesting o-ring sealing on the rudder shaft there Roker....... :-)) ......................but I am a little confused on how it is installed?......
Is the disk with the collar & o-ring tapped & screw's down & locate in the hull proper?..............Derek
Title: Re: SG&K Gentleman's Runabout
Post by: Roker on December 09, 2012, 12:48:44 pm
Derek,
The rudder mounting is a one piece of turned brass with small collar at base, threaded externally with a thro' hole to suit rudder shaft.
The o-ring is then fitted before assembly to hull and a large washer & nut keeps it secure.
(Note I did not make the rudder mounting but salvaged it from and old boat but added a o-ring to make good seal.)
Hope this helps.

Plans didn't arrive in time for the weekend - so with help about scale from Spindrift, I made a gearshift. I still have to make the sides (and get a better camera) and I think the lever handle is a little too long. I'm planing to connect the gear lever to a servo linked to the speed controller - is this possible?

Stop Press! Plans and wood pack have arrived - now where's my glue!!

P.S. Dear Santa, please can I have a lathe, a milling machine, a nickel plate bath, a laser cutter and.................

Absolutely.... just use a Y lead from the Throttle channel to the ESC and Servo.... A sub micro servo like this one should be more than adequate
http://www.servoshop.co.uk/index.php?pid=XYMS37SS&area=Servo
you might even get away with a micro linear servo if you want to keep the weight down
http://www.servoshop.co.uk/index.php?pid=JP4499958&area=Servo

The hardest part will be getting the throws between the servo and the shifter to match.  Not exactly difficult just a bit of a head scratcher

Boat worked great on the pond.
My final comments, great boat to build, my first plank on frame (made some mistakes on the way but don’t we all), special thanks to Clive for supplying his pictures.
If you want any further information on build / materials etc drop me a line. More than happy to help.

From e-bay toy Wrestling Figure modified to suit. Cost about £3.50 (including postage). About 7" tall.

Just super glued my thumb and finger together attempting diagonal planking around the stern! This time it really stuck - missing skin on thumb. I think it might be time to start steaming the planks, or maybe try using contact adhesive - any suggestions?
Getting quite close to finishing - photos to come.

One suggestion might be to get a bottle of Super glue remover. Hope you're allright.

And maybe put it handy and crack the seal - before the glue work begins  O0

Hi all,

Here are my latest build photos:

I've added a a dummy engine, the brushless motor fits in front and underneath, re-modelled the dash (more work to be done) and made one of the seats.
You can see the problems I had planking around the stern (well done spindrift!). Does anyone know of a good mahogany filler or is it sawdust and glue?
After reading the build write up in Marine Modeller International I've decided to fit trim tabs, you can see the control tube on the port stern. Also I made a dummy fuel filler, which is my shaft oiler.

Still loads to do - started thinking about my next build!

I just discovered this thread and registered for the forum. I am the designer of this boat. The boat was designed as a full scale boat, the design was then reduced to make a model. The first model was a 1/4 scale "proof of concept" boat. The design was then drawn as an 1/8th scale boat, Bryant Thompson built the model and wrote an article on it. SG&K Classic Boats is now Stillwater Boat Company. The boat builder/restorer is Steven Gray. Steven is a retired US Army helicopter pilot. The forward part of the hull was lifted from the 1952 Chris Craft 19' Racing Runabout, the aft portion of the boat si all new classic design. The design has undergone some changes. The Chris Craft has very little freeboard, therefore it is a rather wet boat. The original bottom design is very much "old school" flat bottom. That makes for a faster boat when there is limited power available. The flat bottom design makes for a  rough riding boat. The freeboard has been increased and the bottom is now a "Vee" with 22 degrees of deadrise. Full scale CAD plans are available as .pdf files for the 1/4 scale boat.
I have several other model boat designs available in scales from 1/8th to 1/2 scale. The 1/2 scale is of a 21' Chris Craft Cobra.

Hi Quickshift
I enjoyed building the run about very much,
and l hope l have done it some justice.
I have a couple of questions if l may.
Did the full size boat get built, and how many blades
on the propeller.
All yours

Clive,
The full scale boat has not been built, we need to hit the lottery or find a buyer to order one. The boat builder has built a 1/4 scale boat. It has a gas engine with onboard starter. We used the 1/4 scale model to verify the water line location. The full scale boat would most likely carry a 5.7 liter GM V8 engine. I would guess we hould carry a 4 blade prop on that engine. My 30' boats are dwsigned for twin V8 engines. They can carry twin V10 Ilmor engines. If the front cockpit is eliminated on the Great Lakes Racer she can carry 3 engines as large as 700 HP V10 Ilmors. At 2100 HP the boat would not be the thing for the uninitiated. It would definitely be capable of rapidily getting into more trouble than the driver could handle.
