Hello!!!
A few months ago, I started to build the Pat Tritle’s Yoda’s Ark. The plan recommends to do it with 1/8” balsa, but it doesn´t makes me very happy; never construct a boat with balsa and feel like it could be somehow fragile, so I decided to make it with 1/8” plywood
Here I send you a pic of the framework.
-
Here I started the planking
-
After planking the sides with ramin wood strips (sorry, don’t know the name in English), I decided to use 1/16” ply to plank the bottom.
-
I choose to make a solid balsa block for the front instead of planking. As it’s going to be covered with fiberglass, feel like it’ll work out well.
-
Some wood filler before sanding
-
Here we have the hull completed before fiberglassing
-
Fiberglassing, I choose to use 2 oz fiberglass cloth and pacer z-poxy finishing resin
-
Here you have it after the first coat
-
The boat needed two more coats of finishing resin and a session of sanding. As it’s going to be painted, at the end I put some paste and another session of sanding (95%of the paste will go away) :-))
-
After planking the sides with ramin wood strips (sorry, don’t know the name in English), I decided to use 1/16” ply to plank the bottom.
We know it as Ramin in the UK also, but as it is classed as a Special Hardwood we are unable to get it any more.
Len.
-
Thank you very much for the information Len, didn´t know about that restriction in UK.
After sanding the paste I decided to begin painting her, the first thing is to put the primer. I’ve been using DuPont’s automotive paints in some of my other boats with excellent results, so decided to use it once again
-
By the time I finished with the primer, I noticed that didn’t put the ruder tubes, so before plying once again the primer build the tubes with their base.
-
I was a little bored with the hull, so decided to build the benches. I thought they was too simple so decided to change them a little, changed the style and made them with Crispy-Kreme Wooden Stirrers Coffee Mixers and here is what I’ve got.
-
Hello!!!!
A little more work. As I don’t have a place especially for my buildings, it’s been a little difficult to me to paint the hull, so decided to work in the main deck. I saw some wooden yachts using two kinds of wood, so determined to use Zapelli and Manzonia in the planking of it
As it was finished the planking of the main deck I put two stringers of mahogany.
By now I’m painting the hull and making the propellers, I’ll tell you about when it’s finished
Best regards
-
Progressing well you are young padawan :)
-
Thank You Master :embarrassed:
-
with a name like Yoda's ark someone had to :embarrassed:
-
Hello!!!!
I’ve been working in some parts of the boat as time permits me.
I’ll show you how I made the propellers, mainly used two materials, 1/8” collars and 0.9 mm brass.
First, with the dremel, I made two 30 degrees grooves in the collars
I made each blade with the 0.9 mm brass and solder with tin to the collar
Sorry about the Pic, doesn’t make justice to the propellers
-
Hello!!!!
I’ve been working a little more, by now I made the cabin, all in mahogany, here is one pic.
-
I’ve been painting the hull; I’m using automotive DuPunt’s enamels and primer (more or less 6 coats of each color), by now I have to wait about two weeks in order to apply a coat of urethane
Best regards
-
Coming on very nicely.
Well done
cheers

Thank you very much vnkiwi
I forgot to tell you about painting the hull; I’m using automotive DuPunt’s enamels and primer, more or less 8 coats of each color, plus sanding.
By now I have to wait about two weeks in order to apply a coat of urethane
-
Nice work man any updates?
-
Hello!!!!
By now I applied two coats of urethane, I’ve been sanding and using wax, almost finished, and then, I’m planning to install the running hardware. Sorry don’t have pictures of my work, it’ll almost look the same.
Best regards

Hello Guys
I’ve been working in the hardware. Here in México, there are few places to buy hardware and fitting, the most are for airplanes, I only know one decent store who sale things for boats, but is too far away, so sometimes I have to do those things myself. That’s the arms case, I had to build them both using 1/8” collars and 0.9 mm brass and the results work well but I think the next time could do it better
Here I send you a picture of the rudders hardware with the servo
As you can see in the picture, I found the advice of a marine expert
Best regards
-
Hello!!!
I let the hardware a little and made the batteries hatch, the only thing it needs are the brass fittings and the varnish
Best regards
-
nice work man I love how you made your own prop.
-
Is it it just me or do you think that people with less ' off the shelf ' parts or access to lot's of different materials as we do often make really good models with what they have at there disposal? I am messing about ( still ) just converting two toy RTR type boats and people like this just amaze me with their standard of workmanship. Every credit to you, your model looks wonderful !!!! Regards, Dave.
-
Hello!!!!
Thank you very much for your comments, maybe is as just what you mentioned, if I have access to a good source of boats stuff nearby, surely wouldn’t be looking or thinking how to do those things O0 . Both ways I really enjoy doing this
Best regards
-
Hello!!!
After a few weeks of a slow progress, I’ve almost finished the wood work of the deck. By now it have two coats of varnish, send you the picts.

Sven

Hello!!!!
Thank you all for your comments, I really appreciate them.
Sven, the plan came from an extinct magazine called “Radio control boat modeler”, but now you can find it in the author’s page http://www.patscustom-models.com/boatplans.html (http://www.patscustom-models.com/boatplans.html) or in the magazine editor’s page http://www.airagestore.com/plans.html?cat=173 (http://www.airagestore.com/plans.html?cat=173)

Hello!!!
Going slowly, by now I’ve finished all the wood work of the fore deck.
In the bow, there goes a couple of pieces that needed to be bent , I needed to made them thinner to bent them with the air gun.
At the end I apply two coats of marine banish
Best regards
-
Hello!!!!
I even put the rails at the fore deck with 1/16 brass rods
Nice day

Hello!!!
A pictures of the floor at the sides of the cabin, it is made with ply planked but don't know the name of the wood

Thank you for your comments vnkiwi
By now I begun making the roof, it consist in a mahogany framework with the roof of balsa, had to use some mahogany frames in the inside in order to keep the curvature and obtain more rigidity
Best regards
-
Hello!!!!
The plans marked that the cabin is going to be as you see it in the last picture, but I felt it was to poor, so decided to add a little wood by the sides

Hello!!!
I've been working slowly (not to much time for the hobby), but I made the stairs (two in mahogany) and the handrails (In mahogany too)
.
-
Hello !!!
Here you have a picture as she is by now, I installed the portholes, but the handrails are not glued yet because I have to varnish them and another parts, even the cabins roof isn't glued yet, I need to work in the details.
Best regards

Hello guys!!!
I've been working on the vents, They are not in the plan, but read another thread and the author put a couple of nice vents, made an internet research to find the kinds, sizes, materials and forms. Here in Mexico only a couple of places use to sell boat fittings, but they don’t have vents, though it would be too expensive asking for only two vents, so decided to build them. I looked for copper elbows, here in Mexico the smallest size I found are ½”, didn’t found 3/8” or ¼”, maybe the hydraulic repair shop could handle that size in another material, but couldn’t find any close to my home. First I cut away the excess of material, then roll an 1/16 x 17” vinyl (the blue one in the pic), and glued an styrene base; to finish the job, primed and painted. They look good, at a scale size they should be 50cm high. Have the feeling that they should look better if they were made with a 3/8” elbow. What you think???
Best regards
-
Have only just come upon your log Escipion, ............ I think that what you've accomplished with the materials accessible to you is brilliant, a real credit to you - sincerely O0 A true scratch modeller - well done to you and thanks for posting!
Kind regards, Tony. :-))
-
Hi guys!!!!
It’s been a lot since I’ve been here.
Thank you very much Tony for your words, here in México we use to say “you made me feel like a Peacock”, I really appreciate your words.
Let me tell you I have some family problems, so can’t dedicate enough time to the hobby, but there is some progress. A friend of mine found some 3/8” copper elbows, so I made the vents with them and they look more in scale than the ½”. Made the cabin vent and by now applied two coats of varnish to the cabin, deck, handrails and stairs. In the pictures you can see as far as she is by now, the only thing is that I’m waiting the varnish to dry, so the handrails, stairs and roof vent are not glued yet.
Best regards

Looking really impressive.
Please keep us updated

Hello!!!
Thank you for your comments Ned
A little more of advance
First I fixed the life- savers with a line of brass, to the main cabin. Those life-savers are from Robbe, and made the red color with 3M adhesive vinyl
-
Then fixed both benches, the control panel and the motors control
I believe the next step is to finish the roof and some little details in the cabin :-)
Best regards
-
Hello!!!!
At last I made more building than the average
Decided to build the cabins roof, made the handrails (mahogany), there is a long piece of wood in the borders (Don’t know what is it for). The plan doesn’t say anything about a horn, but I feel it’s necessary, so I made an aluminum one. The plan does say about a bell, here in Mexico, time ago I bought some of them in a handcraft market, believe the people use them for baptism celebrations, as a souvenir, It looks like it was made for the boat.
What is missing? the situation lights (the plan doesn’t mention them, but I believe she should have them), and maybe a front light
Best regards
-
Hello!!!!
I continued with the exterior of the cabin, made a handrail for the stairs, the plan doesn’t include them, but thought it convenient. I saw another guys pictures of his boat and he include a couple of poles, they look nice so decided to make a couple of those, made them with bamboo brochette sticks, they look very nice made a brass supports and install them. In the stern part of the cabin place a chain, it looks nice
I have a problem, in the front goes a metallic defense (bumper), and I don’t know how to make it, any advice?, the plan mark the use of duck tape, but believe I sold put something more realistic.
What is missing? two little flag poles and part of the electronics, if everything goes well, this weekend she could make his first trip
Best regards
-
Hello!!!
Sorry guys, forgot to end this story, by now she is almost finished, took her to the pond in October 2014, she navigate very well, no bad habits, the only problem was I use a couple of 1500 Mah piranha Nicd batteries, each one supports only 15 min, never built a two engine boat so didn’t took that in mind, next time I’ll try with a Lipo.
Sorry about the pictures, I took them with my old Cellphone
Best regards

A last picture about the electronics
Have a nice day

That's some interesting geometry on the rudder linkage.

That's some interesting geometry on the rudder linkage.

Unless in the photo it is full to port instead of in neutral position, if not as you say Mr M
Interesting.

A curious situation indeed. The servo at it's 'half way' point, is it not. ?
I should like to see pictures of the movement either way !
Cheers

Perhaps the lake has a clockwise one way system {:-{
Seriously though the rudders must be hard a port in
the photo.
Lovely model . A credit to the builder.

Hey guys, you are right, didn't set up the servo by the time I took the picture, the arm is at 90 degrees in relation to the servo ant the main ruder arm is 90 degrees too
-
Hi Guys!!!!
I had the opportunity of going to the pond this weekend and took my Yoda's with me, this time I took my camera, send you so good photos, sorry, couldn't take a video.
Best regards
