Title: Building Deansmarines TIMRIX as SILLOTH STAG
Post by: Propslip on October 18, 2012, 10:29:31 am
Earlier this year I was asked to make a model of the Stag Line coaster SILLOTH STAG a ship I sailed on for some years. Deansmarine do a model of TIMRIX. When built these two coasters were built as sister ships under previous names. Whilst sailing as NELLIE M (Metcalf Motor Coasters) she was sunk by the IRA. After being salvaged she was lengthened by 11 metres & the single hatch divided into two, with the after section being raised. The Deans model shows the ship after these modifications. After some research I was surprised to find the SILLOTH STAG was still afloat & sailing as FROJDI 1 under the Albanian Flag. There was a link to the operators out there & they kindly sent me some photos of the ship taken during a recent dry docking. The first job to build this model as SILLOTH STAG was to shorten the hull by 145mm. A section was roughly cut out & the hull re-joined (Jumboising in reverse)!!! Evergreen "2H " section & a layer of fibre glass matting was used to strengthen the join. All the deck supports were fitted & the various openings made in the hull. The maindeck was shortened to fit. The awful white metal 3 bladed prop was replaced with a nice brass 4 bladed one with a far more accurate profile. A prominate feature of the hull in both vessels was the "D" section rubbing band around most of the hull & accommodation. Again Evergreen came to the rescue & this was trimmed & fitted. Next the bulwarks were attended to. I chose the addition of plasticard strip route, rather than the messy filling way. The rudder was modified to the correct shape, there was no taper on the actual ships rudder. That is the build so far, more later.

Another picture showing the rubbing band & the delightful brass prop. I bought 2 one as a spare that the ship carried fore side of the bridge on the maindeck. The actual spare would have been cast iron but brass looks nicer.

The Brass propeller & new rudder have now been fitted. Compare the Deans ones with the replacements. The hull has been sprayed in primer & this shows where more fine sanding is required. I want to get the black on the hull so I can fit the porthole glass. I have also started work on the bulwark supports a real chore!! The supports supplied with the kit are pretty basic & I am making new ones. The Macro feature on my camera make this all look rather crude but in reallity all all looks quite good.

Hi Propslip

I'll tag along with your build - cutting a section out of a hull would sare me silly - I'd just be expecting my jointing to fail.

Yes it was pretty scary. It helped that this model is being made for display, so structual strength eas not to important. It helped that the hull was parallel in the section I cut. If it had been a working model I would have given it another layer of well resin impregnated fibre glass matting.

A couple of coats of red primer, a bit of sanding & the hull join almost disappears. Hull sides next.

The black goes on, one side anyway. Tamiya masking tape gives a nice sharp line

The next area to attack is the accommodation. The shape is good but almost every window & port is of the incorrect shape or in the wrong position. More fiddly work for my sausage like finger.!!! The handrails around the accommodation will now be drilled & fitted. This section is now ready for assembly.

This build is progressing but for some reason my pictures will not upload, I keep getting this re-directing message. The normal process was simple & straight forward when I started. I understand little of other things like photbucket etc. Anyone help.

Hi Propslip
Sorry I can't help, but I have noticed several people mentioning problems. It will probably resolve itself in a few days.

And another view. Next some more sraying & then the windows. Then those bulwarks, I have always had trouble getting a neat paint line around these. This time I am marking the bulwark position right onto where the capping rail will fit. Then I shall spray the deck red, then mask & spray the bulwark dark grey. I will then spray the bulwarks supprts. Finally I shall scrap paint from the mating edges & tack the supports in place, hopefully a neat job.

Yes Snowberry is in drydock for repairs. Got dropped & damaged. Needs a new mast, radar & a few other bits & then the hard bit matching in all the weathered paintwork.

Out of interest the corvette & coaster are almost the same scale, which illustrates just how small the flower class were.

After a short break I am now continuing with this build. The next area is the hatch & MacGregor Hatch Covers. These differ considerably from the kit, so most is scratchbuilt using some of the kit parts. This will be built as a complete assembly, painted & then fitted to the model. First a coaming was built. Then the hatch & covers made. I have decided to have the 3 forward sections open some some additional detailing is required.

More tedious work, hatch coaming supports. The grey pipe is the firemain running forward. It all looks a bit untidy(http://i1342.photobucket.com/albums/o762/Propslip/bth_002.jpg?t=1353638186) but it will look a lot better after a coat of grey paint.

The grey pipe is the firemain running forward.
The picture is so small at 280px wide (as are all yesterday and today) that I can just about see something that may be the pipe in question. It might even be grey.

Although the pics change the cursor to suggest they are clickable nothing happens. The ones from earlier are bigger to begin with, but also get even bigger when clicked, so clearly something has changed since 6 Nov. If it's the new forum I'm a bit puzzled that the earlier pics still act reasonably. Be nice if it can be fixed as it's hard to see what you're really doing at this size.

I agree this is very annoying. When I started this build putting pictures on was simple. Now I seem to have to jump through hoops to get anything to come up at all!!!

I shall now move over to the port side. No firemain on that side so no tricky holes to drill. This has taken me a couple of days & some swearing to keep focused on this part of the build. I have made some other parts to break up the tedium. The aft hold access has been made & some very nice brass portholes fitted to the accommodation. I have 4 more larger ports to cut. 2 for the Chief Engineers cabin, on the after bulkhead & 2 on the focsle bulkhead. I shall then move to the focsle where there are 2 access hatches, one either side of the mast.

I have been working on the focsle this week. There are some vents & access hatches to make. Not in the kit so they have all been made of plasticard. The mast has also been made.
