Title: 1/200 HIJMS Yamato
Post by: rsm on October 28, 2012, 01:20:45 pm
I am currently working (very slowly!) on the old Nichimo kit of Yamato. All the running gear is in and the turrets rotate, but I've done no painting an there is still a lot of construction to do.  George Sitek provided the props and shafts, but the two rudders are the kit items. The motors are four 385s controlled by two Mtronik Vipers. The gun barrels are all turned brass replacements. I've also fitted an Admiralty electronics main gun sound unit.

The guns rotate using the kit based system, but the motor and gearbox have been replaced with two servos controlled by Action electronics servomorphs.

Nice job. Will you be able to get at the innards very easily once everything is in place ?(http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p8/DickyD_photos/Smileys/thinking1.gif)

Looking good so far. How easy, or difficult is it to set up the servomorph units?
Cheers
Phil

Just sold one today built out of the box except for the running gear for £25. I have second one waiting in the wings complete with the brass etch set from gold medal models  art wox wood deck and turned barrels from rb models in Poland. Should go well with the 1/200 scale Arizona. The one I sold today was built way back in 1992 cost at that time £50 from Beatties.  :-)) :-)) :-)) :-))

I didn't want to make the whole deck removable so most of the internals are centred around the opening that the superstructure sits over, there are then a couple of hatches I've put in at the front and rear (that I'll blend in so they are not too obvious!) for access to the prop tubes, rudder and sound box. Access is still not the best now the deck is on though.
The servo morphs are very easy to set up, they give the turrets a nice slow traverse.
I also have an Artwox deck and lots of etched brass to fit. I bought the kit secondhand (but unstarted) and she came with a set of Steve Nuttall turned main gun barrels, I've since bought turned barrels for the other guns from GPM in Poland.

Glad to see you made a thread RSM.  :-)) Hope you come through with the notion of sailing her with your escorts.

Ever since seeing a Nichimo Yamato for the first time in, of all places, an art gallery (under a glass display case along with other more typical ship models used for decor) I'd wanted one but gradually disowned the idea since it is so massive. This was many years ago and at the time they could be had for +/-$200.00 but now they are slightly more expensive new.

Glad to see the 1/200 Bismarck on the playing field. That's a little bit more my style since I have a Teutonic background... 8)

rsm,

Could you please provide more info about the shafts and props, eg size, length to enable the placing of an order.

We don't have much available here in Australia, so looks like having to get the gear from George Sitek.

The propellers are 3-bladed and 2.5cm in diameter and the shafts are 3mm by about 21.5cm, the tubes are about 11cm. But I didn't specify any sizes to George, I just asked him if he could do a running gear set for Yamato in 1/200th scale minus the rudders.
