Title: Masthead wind vane
Post by: gregk9 on December 09, 2012, 02:03:18 pm
Does anyone know of a shop/store in Uk thats sells such a beast?
The pool our club currently uses has a very changeable wind, as it is sielded by a large earth bank, so half the pool is sheltered from cross winds, making gauging wind direction a dark art.
So though perhaps such an item might make sailing a bit easier as you could see the wind change in the vicinity of the actual boat whilst out on the water.

many thanks in advance.

Just use a strip of coloured carrier bag.
I have seen the proper ones for sale
At about 1/4 of the cost of a Victoria.
Something scale size on a Vic would
be very hard to see at any distance.
Once you have sailed a few times your
experience and looking how the sails behave
will suffice unless you are into racing in which
case you need an IOM or Marblehead.
That is unless your club races Vics.

Nice set of homemade sails there Danny  :-))

Gregk9....a strip of brightly coloured ripstop nylon makes a good wind indicator on the masthead and also can be used for tell tails on the sails.

Cheers

Yes, homemade sails with some fine material supplied by ... you  ;)

Mast is a part of a £6 canal fishing pole, fishing wire shrouds, fishing line sheets, fishing swivels - I spent more time in the fishing shop than in a model shop!! Still it goes to show that fishing gear can also be used for something useful!  {-) {-)

Cheers

Thanks Scoop for your reply and also for the article in Model Boats magazine. Our club is new on the scene so still finding our feet and trying our best to get around the other local clubs, so anything in print can only do good for us.
thanks again and be in touch with some good news hopefully soon about a nice piece of water !
