Title: Re: Re: NAME THE FLAG 2
Post by: Norseman on February 27, 2012, 08:21:47 pm
While we wait for a flag .........

Looking for Dereks family name, I had to dabble in heraldry.
New and a little daunting to me. If you look at the link

http://cheshire-heraldry.org.uk/lesson.html

they describe just one example but it helped me start to
get the sequence in my head for desriptions/searches.

Ok a lot of you guys will be way beyond this, but it's nice
to have a starting point when you are a newbie.  O0

Well I'm off out to stock up on lamb before the price just
rockets with this Akabane like disease. I've just been
looking at lambs but only the heraldic Lamb of God - or paschal
lamb, or agnus Dei. Nothings easy in heraldry so I hope the
simple link helps someone to dip their toes.

Flag Anyone?

Title: Re: Re: NAME THE FLAG 2

Spot on W3bby, the initials were there right under the pennant plus all the "lines" "tracks"  "Watford JUNCTION" .  I was running out of hints , how do I get "points", "ballast", "signals" into it so a sleepy railwayman would get it {-)   Now to see (sea  >>:-( ) what ships the NBR had if any. Why else a pennant ?!
Title: Re: Re: NAME THE FLAG 2
Post by: Norseman on March 07, 2012, 03:48:29 pm
I'm one of those heavy sleepers and hence I missed your several points,
for my brain is only used for ballast and thus ignored your obvious signals
to get me on track.  :}

I can find US Chaplains Guidons for sale as above......?

My other thought tended towards the merchant marine chaplains but I've not found an example
to confirm or refute the idea.

Guid on ye man ( Scottish accent) :embarrassed:    Is that the term for a forked tail flag ?
Title: Re: Re: NAME THE FLAG 2
Post by: w3bby on March 23, 2012, 05:03:00 pm
Not really, then it is a swallow-tailed guidon....

Abbreviated from Wikipedia as relates to the UK - Colours are carried by foot regiments. The standard is the colours-equivalent for the heavy cavalry and the guidon is the equivalent for the light cavalry.

The word guidon is a corruption of the French guyde homme – 'the guide man'

Or

World English Dictionary
guidon  (ˈɡaɪd ə n)

— n
1.    a small pennant, used as a marker or standard, esp by cavalry regiments
2.    the man or vehicle that carries this

[C16: from French, from Old Provençal guidoo,  from guida guide ]

Hello

Back to Guidon, yes it's a french name and for flag it's coming from army and regiment to align part of the regiment to other. By the way each "clan" have it's own guidon serving to guide and to align but also as distinctive mark.

In the navy a guidon is the name of your burgee. Again like a distinctive flag for a "clan"

Then it's also a name of some railway signals and now for most people the word is mainly the wheel of a bicyle as you guide your way with it.

Finding the flag has proved interesting, fair number of pics but references to people a little hard to find. Best I can do is Bonnie Prince Charlie and the flag raised at the Battle of Culloden. According to one reference it is still flown there where the Jacobite lines formed......

Dave , at least the Mallaig line from Fort William runs the Jacobite steam hauled train, sadly now better known as the Hogworts Express by the guilable sorry film fans.  I just asked Wiki for Jacobite flags and got a lot of images but didnt get the one I wanted, which has five or six white cockades down the hoist side.  Look for "white cockade" + Jacobite and you`ll have a weeks reading

Hunza (Pre-independence Pakistan)

State of Hunza in Gilgit Agency which is North of North-West Frontier Province of Pakistan. Recognized by the British as a semi-independent principality in 1850s, Hunza progressively lost sovereignity in the process of constitutional changes in Pakistan. State was incorporated into Pakistan in 1974. Last ruler was Mir Mohammad Jamal Khan 1946-74. Hunza is supposedly one of the most beautiful corners of the world.

Hi Surf

I'll go out out on a limb with a guess

Southern Cross and I'm thinking Australia
Not typical of their art but just made me think Aboriginal
now that low orange curve reminds me of Ayers rock ....... under a hot sun
and the blue looks like a pool ......... or watering hole

Uluru is the Aboriginal and official name but does not mean "waterhole",
it's an Aboriginal place name, referring to both the rock itself and the waterhole
on top of the rock. The Aboriginal owners of Uluru call themselves Anangu. They
are often referred to as the Yankunytjatjara and Pitjantjatjara people,  the two
languages spoken by the Anangu

I can't find anything in support but I'll go out out on a limb and say
an Anangu flag for Uluru or the resort of Yulara
Yulara means "crying", "weeping" I read.

SEALINK

and you give me this one on my day off work Duncan  <*< - well at least the British Rail days are mostly happy memories O0

An inverted blue version of the BR symbol was used on Sealink's funnels and flags. I just couldn't remember why it was inverted but according to wiki this was because:
1.The inverted arrows make an "S" for Sealink when in that direction.
2.While railways in the UK pass right to right (i.e. drive on the left), ships have to pass left to left (i.e. drive on the right), so this version was more accurate.
3.On the ships' funnels the symbol was reversed on the port side but correct on the starboard side, so the 'top' arrow was always pointing towards the bow of the ship.

I'm surprised we have to adjust the link to get a text for the link, most forums offer it directly you post a link.
Click the link button and you get [ url ][ /url ] Insert = after so you get [ url= and place in you link. Then add your text between ] and [/url]
[ url=http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/us%5Env.html ]like this[ /url ] (Extra spaces added round url so it is readable otherwise it tries to make a link....)

.......... Snowy .......was on the box/tv when I was a kid and I
remember the voice announcing 'Hergé's Adventures of Tintin'

So maybe that - but maybe you are even more cunning and it is
hinting at The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin, an American series also
on TV? There was nothing stylised about the latter though - so
for me it's back to Hergé'sTintin ..................but I don't recall
any flags at all.  {:-{

Flag not listed as that one Duncan, and you should think again about not knowing the album

Flags of the World says it is the Zeppelin company flag....the more colourful version(whites instead of yellow) was the Airship Corps(military) but...that would only be during the Nazi era.  Hmmmm I`ll have to have a look elsewhere to see where my cap badge version comes in perhaps pre -Nazi.  I have a passing interest in the airships of the period and visit the Friedrichshafen museum often. Modern versions fly from there and you can have a flight in one for about 400 euros :((   Champaign included !  Music, I was swooning over Joan Baez and agreeing with Bob Dylan`s protests in those days, rock was too "Yank" for me ( I worked for the USAF then and wasn't too impressed with things transatlantic )  The Zeppelin company is still operating making construction machinery in conjunction with Caterpillar(USA). The Zeppelin NT company  makes the modern NT , new technology, airships. See the advertising on the model. Enjoy the boat show...you DID take a camera of course? O0

I would think that the yellow of the picture is just aging of the white in the flag. Found another image here. (http://www.airships.net/deutsche-zeppelin-reederei)

Arrow, rock too "Yank"!!!! With bands such as The Who, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Rolling Stones and Black Sabbath????

The album is of course Led Zeppelin, their debut album

Well there you go Duncan you did get the flag
http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/de$dzr.html
German Zeppelin Company Flag
but I would have taken
http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/de$dzr.html#mis
Zeppelin Corps Flag
and as the album is called 'Led Zeppelin' as Ian spotted - you had it but threw it away

There's an awful big 'Folk' influence deep in that 'Rock' - LZ's mother's milk for me.
Saw LZ live in Liverpool & Black Sabbath too in 1970's, later saw I the Who.
Never did see Deep Purple ..... and I refused to pay a fiver for a David Bowie show. :embarrassed:

Years later I got a free AC/DC ticket - I hadn't been a fan but that show blew me away O0

That was fun anyway linking the two.

Anyway, we now have our work cut out trying to find Arrow's flag! :D

The flag shown, with coat of arms, is the principality`s head honcho`s personal flag. The national flag has the stripes only. A centre of piracy for decades.

Hi there

Might this be the Golden Dragon Flag (Baner Y Ddraig Aur) Raised by Owain Glyndŵr as his battle flag?

Cheers,
Tim
Title: Re: Re: NAME THE FLAG 2
Post by: Norseman on June 12, 2012, 10:28:21 am
Absolutey correct Tim - Your turn now.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Draig_aur.gif

The banner is known as Y Ddraig Aur or "The Golden Dragon" which has ancient origins. It was famously raised over Caernarvon during the Battle of Tuthill in 1401 by Owain Glyndŵr. I believe Y Ddraig Aur is associated with Y Mab Darogan or Son of Destiny / Chosen One

Re clue - The Sons of Glyndŵr (Welsh Nationalists) had a period in the 1970's where they were said to be resposible for setting fire to many second homes owned by English.

The flag looks like the Australian Federation 1830s-1920s but with two extra horizontal stripes, another date perhaps ? {:-{

Not the federation flag although the correct time period.

After a little more research i have found out that this particular flag may only have been a proposed flag  {:-{

so it might be a little difficult to find.

Hi Guys

I'm just back from Malta - beeping cold here isn't it.

Well you did all the work identifying Russia and Alaska for me to find http://zebratigerfish.blogspot.co.uk/2011/01/russian-american-post-colonial-heritage.html
The writer states 'I have created post-historical Russian Heritage Flags that are based on the flags of modern states of the USA and one province of Canada' .....
so I wonder is it a recognised flag, has anyone adopted it for use? I have no idea how that sort of thing works but we have had flags here from Hersheys Tin Tin.

Dear Nick and Arrow, Now, this is a touch awkward since one is right by title, and the other about right by 'rough region'. Indeed, if Arrow's had been the only 'as near as correct' reply it would have been deemed correct. In this scenario the correct answer can only be that naming the exact region title.

Dear Nick,

Yes, it is the Chuvash Republic :-)) (Volga-Vyatka region between Nizhny Novgorod and Kazan).

To keep things 'in line' Nick, would you mind if we work with Spooks' flag please. It is good to see a new participant. Thankyou :-)) It certainly looks as if it might be Geest, and, you being rarely wrong( :} ), I am not going to bother looking it up! :-))

A message to any Mayhem member who has not participated in this Topic. Some might have reservation in taking part thinking they may hoist a flag that has been seen before... please do not worry about this, no-one will expect you to have scrutinised, logged and noted every single flag that has been Posted on here. I think I will be right in saying that I doubt regulars will remember every single flag posted from general memory! - we must have had near 300 so far? We might recognise it, but we will still have to go and look most up again!). Most of the obvious flags have of course been seen, but if there might be some duplication with other things it doesn't matter. You will be able to guess the general flow of things by, say, looking at the last fifteen or so flags... luckily there are many many 1000's to choose from so there is plenty of scope!

  >>:-( >>:-( Seriously guys the clues are getting a bit too obvious... I enjoy the research (a little time wasting). Can't we leave it a little longer before clues or at least have more cryptic clues.. If you know enough to give a clue then answer or do as I have tended to do lately and leave it for a while. Hopefully we will get some more new blood in here.

On another forum, of which I am a member, we have a long-running media quiz and it never ceases to amaze me how many people forget to rename their clip/image/whatever, and the *ahem* less honest members capitalise on this so I always rename mine. Sometimes humourous, sometimes meaningless.  ok2

Title: Re: Re: NAME THE FLAG 2

Its a Squadron Badge Dave
Nothing to do with the vessel class.
It just denotes that the ship is part of the
1st Fast Patrol Boat Squadron.
Just the same as a frigate from the 10th
Frigate Squadron would have a number 10
on the funnel.
When I was in Eskimo in the Persian Gulf we were
The 9th Frigate Squadron but we had a picture of
an arab dhow as our squadron badge.
Thats life in a blue suit Dave.
