Title: IN MEMORY OF DickyD
Post by: John W E on December 15, 2012, 09:31:56 am
I am very sad today as I have just lost a good friend and we all have.   Sadly this morning after chest complications Richard died this morning - our thoughts are with Gillian his dear wife and family at this sad time.   I know we will all miss him and this forum will not be the same somehow without him.

RIP my dear friend.    I shall miss talking to you.

Richard was a man who could never resist tweaking the lion's tail just to see what would happen! Sometimes this could backfire spectacularly as certain prematurely grey moderators will attest. I do wonder if his tilts against 'authority' were partly due to frustration caused by his dreadfully debilitating medical condition. He usually presented a light hearted face to the Forum but it must have been very difficult for him and I think he was very brave knowing that his days were numbered. He and I had our disagreements but we also helped each other out and I'm still on his mailing list!

There was however the other Dicky D who would cheerfully spend hours helping out both new and established members and researching obscure information on their behalf which enabled them to make the most of their respective model boating projects. The many kits he built gave him a great deal of practical experience in putting them together and he was always generous in sharing this with others building the same models. He was also a mine of information on the various techniques we use in this hobby. As such he was a huge asset to this Forum. I think this is the Dicky D we will all wish to remember. Richard was one of the original Mayhemers and his loss is indeed a sad one.

As others have said, I think we all owe a great deal to Gillian who made it possible for Richard to continue modelling and posting long after most of us would probably have given up. Our thoughts are very much with her too.

Colin

he was a mad of magnitude, both in his voice , in what he said, and had the feerless way in which he said and told it and wasn't a man to mince words.....and I greatly admire a man for that........don't pussyfoot about if you know your mind......I liked that in Dicky ( richard).
He was also a man of magnitude in his modelling.......a good modeller and always produced top notch stuff, even through his illnesses to the point where I admired him greatl;y for that to.
Although I sadly never met him I wish I had, for over the conversations I had with him through the internet I fealt that I could have called him a friend....he regularly sent my daughters pictures of the highland cattle grazing and "paddling" in his local sailing lake......he needn't have done but that was his kind nature, even through adversity when others would or could not have been bothered.
he will be missed and I will miss his jokes that he sent me over the airwaves.

R I P richard, YOU WILL BE MISSED, by more than you would ever have thought, and my prayers go to you and your family at this very sad time.
God bless.

Neil.

Dear All,

I had no idea or knowledge about this... I simply didn't know until seeing this, and I send immediate.

Whilst we crossed swords it was in 'sprited challenge', and I would like to think there was never anything nasty about it. Yes, I recently asked Martin to keep him away from me, and I make this very open, but it was only for the reason of keeping the peace. I had no grudge on the man, and this I now state very plain, and I take back everything... all is irrelevant.

I am very sorry indeed to learn of his passing.

So much done... so much more to do....

This day has left the forum that much the poorer. Dicky was a larger than life character who never failed to share his knowledge, experience and contacts with anyone in need. I doubt if there are any members who have not been helped by him - directly or indirectly. We will also miss his great sense of fun and waspish humour.

My heart goes out to Gill and the rest of the family - it's going to be a really tough Christmas.

DickyD! What have you done?!    (http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p8/DickyD_photos/Smileys/thinking1.gif)
Well, you've certainly shaken the b*ggers up today!  (http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p8/DickyD_photos/Smileys/emoticon_right.gif)

Not sure if I agree with your method, but there no doubting the result.  (http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p8/DickyD_photos/Smileys/tumb.gif)

I was thinking how to give you an appropriate tribute and, whilst your avatar at half mast, or a suitable extract from your PM of a couple of weeks ago were considered, I couldn't think of anything better than 'borrowing' a couple of your bl**dy annoying smiley faces and using them in my reply!

So, you take care matey, I just wish it had been for longer. (http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p8/DickyD_photos/Smileys/doh-45.gif)

I have just read through all the comments about Dicky.
Yes he was all of that mentioned before.
I did have the pleasure of meeting him and his family.
He and Gill were devoted and I hope that Gill reads all of these comments in her low times.
For myself I would visit both of them, it is only 10 miles or so but for a skate to go visit a scummer, (Portsmouth FC supporter to go visit a Southampton FC supporter) and be offered refreshments shows true grit!!
My heart goes out to you all Gill, all your family, there is a big hole that will never be filled.

Dear All

I would like to thank everyone who has put a message on the forum for DickyD.  As you can guess I am devastated at the loss of DickyD.  He ha been ill for the last week, but as we all know he was very stubborn and would not go into hospital.

I will let everyone know about the funeral arrangements once they are made.

I know Richard would have wanted me to thank everyone and also to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas.

Once again thank you.

SUNSET and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea, But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home. Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness or farewell,
When I embark; For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crost the bar

Farewell my dear friend, fair sailing

Richard was a man who could never resist tweaking the lion's tail just to see what would happen! Sometimes this could backfire spectacularly as certain prematurely grey moderators will attest. I do wonder if his tilts against 'authority' were partly due to frustration caused by his dreadfully debilitating medical condition. I think an apt and worthy post Colin. I initially wondered why his avatar used to state "so many boats and so little time"  It was from talking to him on Skype, seeing his medicine cupboard and realising that everything was such an effort for him that I appreciated Dicky was made of true grit. His family, his dog and the forum was his life, he lived it and fed on it, and yes, if all went a little quiet he'd soon try and wake it up!
My sincere condolences Gill to you and the family, may he rest in peace, God bless, Tony.

I'm shocked to hear of the passing of Dicky D. Although , through this forum, I knew his health wasn't the best but his passing still strikes the heart. Although I never met him personally, as is the case with most of the people on this forum, I had a certain sense of "knowing him" by his entries on the forum. He was obviously a man of great knowledge and not afraid to speak his mind.
I will miss his words on these forum pages in the future.
My condolences to his wife and family. May he rest in peace.

Dicky D was one of life's real characters, and he did a lot to flavour Mayhem.

He will be sorely missed.

Oh dear. First PMK and now Richard (two of the very few people whose voices I would instantly recognise on the phone).
I couldn't say anything better than Colin Bishop's tribute, save that Richard was a loyal friend and customer and I shall miss him a lot.
Gill - I know how much Peter Kierle's family appreciated the comments made here when he died, so I hope you will gain as much strength from the Forum members as they did at such a dark time.

Dicky was someone I could have a blazing argument with one minute, then I'd ask a question and he'd be one of the first to offer me advice or help :-))

Dear All

I have now arranged Richard's funeral, which is on Thursday 3rd January 2013 at 2.30pm.  This being held at the Wessex Vale crematorium, Bubb Lane, Hedge End, Southampton, SO30 2HL.  We would be very happy if anyone would like to attend.

Once again we would like to thank everyone who has put such wonderful messages on the forum.  I didn't realise how much everyone thought of  Richard.  All the messages have been of great help to both myself and the children.

Thank you everyone.

I swear I already posted on this! I had many a conversation with Dicky over deans marine kits and when I visited him he was in fine form. He kindly made me a cuppa and showed me his modelling room.. The one thing that impressed me was his modelling Board was an ironing board! As he said I can alter the height , to either stand or sit and walk around to the other side without moving the model. Coming from someone who was disabled he solved a problem I had been having! He was definitely a character and I shall muss his wit and wisdom and yes his argumentative side.. The last project I know he was working on was Martin's sovremneyclass ready to run boat,, I had sent Him a new scale heli for it,  I hope he finished it or he'll be haunting us on this forum

Gillian, Unfortunately a lot of members may not be able to attend, due to distance, myself included, but you will all be in our thoughts.
Rather than flowers ( and I'm not one to even buy my misses flowers, lol) would Dicky have had a favorite charity that anyone who so wishes, could send a donation in his name......I'm all for that way of remembering him.

Klunk,

Yes I remember well about the ironing board which he also posted a photo it in use and Dickie also mentioned you could get brownie points by buying SWMBO a new ironing board from time to time and 'appropriating' the old one.  {-) {-)

I received an email from Gillian this afternoon, after I posted on his memorial about making a donation rather than send flowers to remember Dicky by , and Gillian has asked me that if I (or anyone else who feels that they would like to make a donation) to the hospital that treated Dicky on his many occasions that he was unwell in recent times could they please make a donation by making a cheque payable to "Southampton Hospital Charity".

I have Gillians postal address and the cheques can be sent to her, if anyone would like to pm me I will be glad to pass it on to them.
I will also forward Gillian's email to Martin if you would prefer to contact him.
thank you.

It might be useful to know which Mayhem members might be able to attend Richard's funeral and at the same time represent those who are not in a position to do so. Obviously with a world wide membership, only a few of us will be in a position to attend in person but I think that the many posts on this topic do demonstrate the impact (in more ways than one  %) ) that Richard had upon this Forum.

Hi Neil Thanks for putting about Donations on the forum.  Can I ask if you could ask the guys who want to donate to make sure they put Richard's name somewhere, as he wants the money to go two particular wards, The Respiratory Centre and The High Dependency Unit, as he spent a lot of time there over the last two years. Thanks once again Neil.  Gillian
I think that if you wish to donate, then we should respect Gillians wishes, and simply post cheques to her, and either martin or I have her postal address. thanks.

I can still see a smiling face on the tube with Dicky talking about or showing me his latest project.

Richard Densham (aka Dicky D) 1947-2012

As most members are now aware, Model Boat Mayhem has started the new year without Dicky D.

After a long period of ill health Dicky passed away on the morning of December 15th.

Dicky had been an active member on Mayhem almost since it began in 2006 Many members have benefited from his numerous contributory posts, his many builds; and the hours he spent emailing, telephoning or otherwise giving advice and sharing his extensive modelling knowledge. He will be sorely missed by many forum members.

The funeral will be held tomorrow, Thursday the 3rd of January at 2.30pm.
At the
  Wessex Vale Crematorium,
  Bubb Lane,
  Hedge End,
  Southampton, SO30 2HL.
Gillian (wife) and family would be very happy if anyone would like to attend.

Gillian has asked that, rather than flowers, people should make a donation to the hospital that treated Dicky on his many occasions that he was unwell in recent times. If you wish to do this, please make a cheque payable to "Southampton Hospital Charity". Dicky would have wanted the money to go to The Respiratory Centre and The High Dependency Unit, as he spent a lot of time there over the last two years. To ensure that the money goes to the specific wards, and in the name of Richard Densham, the cheques can be mailed directly to Gillian. For her mail address, please contact member Neil, or myself (martin admin) by PM.

Several members have asked if there is any way to mark the time of the funeral. It would be nice if we all mark the time in our own personal way. I know one or two members will be raising a glass in memory of Dicky D, at 2.30 on January the 3rd.

Dicky leaves behind Gillian his wife, and his children Stephen and Paula.
Our most sincere and heartfelt condolences to all the family at this sad time.

RIP Dicky

Now I was one to often cross swords with Dicky on this forum BUT what a lot of you dont know is that Richard and myself had set up maany of an argument  to stirr things up a bit......Sorry Martin but it is true.He was a greater than life character and his passing is a great loss to not only is Family but also to his adopted family us Mayhemers.

I cna not make the funerla puerly down to the distance involved BUT I will be closing the Gargage as a mark of respect tomorrow afternoon and will have a glass in the shed with my Boats thinking of Dicky.

Farwell old friend and may you sail be allways full of wind and may you sail to wherever the wind takes you

On a personal note:

Dear Gillian and family,

Dicky had been an active member on Mayhem almost since it began in 2006 Many members have benefited from his numerous contributory posts, his many builds; and the hours he spent researching,  emailing, telephoning or otherwise giving advice and sharing his extensive modelling knowledge. He will be sorely missed by many forum members.

Richard usually came across as quite “straightforward” and always called eggs when they quite obviously eggs... and if you disagreed with him, he wasn't averse to calling you a few names too! Martin, (the bloke who runs the model boat forum) was on the receiving end of Dicky's displeasure once or twice but they always managed to resolve their differences quickly … or eventually! After a while, Martin  came to recognise that many of their ....'misunderstanding' were brought on by Dicky’s illness, the resultant strong medication and the frustrations of his physical limitations and Martin & Dicky became firm ‘internet’ friends.

Martin and Dicky shared in several boat building projects via the forum and Dicky's boat building skills were much admired by thousands of fellow enthusiast and drew much praise from a worldwide audience. Dicky’s boat building skills had the ability to make some of us look rather silly when he made certain difficult tasks look so simple.... often coming up with very easy to follow steps to very tricky tasks. If youi wanted to know something about a model boat and Google didn’t have an answer…. ask DickyD!

Fair Winds and Following Seas Dicky. I’m going to miss him on the forum…. it will be a poorer place without him.

Bob (Shipmate 60), Dave (Dodes) and myself attended Richard's funeral this afternoon. His friend Dave from the Solent Model Boat Club was also there.

We did not go just on our own account but also wanted to represent the large number of Mayhem Members who were unable to attend but were thinking of him today.

The service was well attended with many family members present. The tributes were affectionate and showed just how much Dicky loved his family as they did him. His skills in modelmaking were acknowledged and admired and his prominent membership of Mayhem and help for fellow modellers in the UK and all over the world was also mentioned.

These are never happy occasions but we would like to think that Dicky would have felt that he had a good send off. Gillian was left in no doubt about how many Mayhem members were there in spirit if not in body.

Farewell Richard, you will be remembered.

Colin

Dear All

I would like to thank everyone who has posted on the Forum about DickyD.  As you can guess today was a very hard day, but I am sure he is looking down and saying a big thank you for all the postings.  I have printed them all off and will be keeping them in a keepsake box, which arrived today.  I would also like to thank the members who attended the funeral.  He had a good sent off from everyone.

Over the next few weeks I will be deciding what we are going to do with Richard's boats.  My son, Stephen and I have decided to keep a couple of them so we can sail them as a tribute to him.

Once again thank you.

Gillian
