Title: Shanghai Mothers Day Sail
Post by: herrmill on May 13, 2007, 02:23:16 pm
Here are some photos of today's sail that TigerTiger & I took upon ourselves to help celebrate that venerated American holiday, Mothers Day.  We had a couple expats who somehow were able to get out of the required brunch & shopping excursions, but the few dozen locals we had around us offering advice on how to deal with the constantly changing wind more than made up for it lack of laowai sailors.

Our sailing site is on thr Pudong (east) side of Shanghai across from the Science & Technology Museum.   It's a straight stretch of river (canal) that is constantly having new & exciting buildings being put up that make the sailing a bit unpredictable as the gusts & wind direction seem to change by the minute.

One of the local swim club members was kind enough to do rescue a disabled PT boat that needed assistance.   There is no way you would get me out into that water but I was darn glad that the local SAR was on duty!

The only day's causalty was my Triumph & it's broken mast that probably was the result of me wrestling it out of my car.

More to come as the season starts up.

Chuck

Hi Hermill

I don't think I thanked you properly for the beer.
Hopefully if this Sunday Sail is on the RCinPRC calendar it will grow.

I have added a couple more pics

Beautiful pictures !

Tiger, I see you removed the topsails. Were they a problem ?

Hi Romain

No proplems with the topsails. She sails great with and without them.

But during the day the wind really got up, so I reduced the sail plan (as you would wit6h a real boat). This reduced the amount of heel in gusts of wind. And it was very gusty.

The topsails are on hooks and snap links for rapid easy removal.

Notice the boat stand as well. It is one of those cheap folding kiddy bedroom storage bins. I got in in Carrefour for less than 10 RMB (1 euro).
And it doubles up as somewhere to keep bits when you are sailing.
I glued some foam form a camping bed mat onto the wood for protection.
I got the foam mat in Decathaelon for 29 RMB I have also made a mat to sit on when it gets wet.

Lovely photos of your Mary Jayne! ;D  I didn't realize it yesterday but my camera was set for low res inspection photos so the shots I took don't do justice for your new rig.

Hey, perhaps instead of the 1M class, we all build schooners for the Fall season & I'll be sure to bring out Yamato as the official's boat.

Don't mention it regarding the beers -  lets just be sure to have a proper cooler filled with ice cold beer & sandwiches, as well as stay in the shaded area next time.  I think my fellow boaters over at RCG are envious of our lack of open container laws here!

Feel free to post a few of your photos over at Shanghai ExPat or RCinPRC so we can have a few more of our own out next time.

Great idea with the boat stand. I might make one myself. Would some form of upholstery foam (https://www.foamdirect.co.uk/upholstery-foam-sheets/) suffice for protection do you think? Thanks
