Possibly fishing hawser derek, wrecks seem to be littered in them these days, even though they are well marked??
-
probably not from a fishing hawser,I would have thought it would have shown some evidence of netting? Probably mast.funnel supports or signalling cables perhaps? They would have been as substantial as that shown. She was also fittet with de daussing cables,so could even been those.

...Thanks .....Neil suggests..."Possibly fishing hawser" & rottweiler questions "degaussing cables"
There is very little evidence of steel cabling on the other deck images and no mention in any text in the 243 pages
A closer view of the cable atwart ship close by the X turret barrels would suggest possibly an 8 strand multi core outer layer totalling approx 2" diameter or 6"+ circumference
This is a rather substantial sized hauser wire so I am discounting a wire from the aft mast and also de gausing cable coils which the latter to my understanding were modeled on what we now know high current welding cables.......super high numbers of very fine copper cores

A Trumpter 1/200 Bismark kit and Upgrade set....Thank you Ron Dean for your very timely articles on R/Cing this beast.

-
looks very much like steel wires from the winches to the trawl doors of fishing vessels in that pic Derek......tons of the stuff litter Fleetwood docks even to this day, in rusty heaps.....used to load fathoms of it onto the old side winders in the 70's when I worked summer jobs..........like huge slinky springs if you got the motion correct from the back of the Cosalt wagon to the deck of a trawler, lol............but I don't know what rigging wires are like so can only hazzard an educated guess.
neil.........and I certainly don't wanna fall out with my mate Mick over what it is, lol %% %% %%
-
no argument Neil, just voicing my opinion,as are you,we may never know just what it is.I have PMd Derek re a video on sale on E bay, perhaps the commentary for that may give an insight.A fine ship, lost with a great loss of over 600 crew, the circumstances controversially, which again will never be solved.

Santa got my wife a large HD telly, all the better for her to watch continuous forensic dramas and endless Harry Potter repeats. However, every cloud as they say . . . There was quite a lot of good quality expanded black neoprene sheet amongst the packaging. That got diverted straight into the workshop.
I knew there was something useful in that huge box. {-)
-
Various forms of alcohol and sweets.
"Life" by Keith Richards ( fun read :} ).
Two new tyres and a battery for the car ! :-)) .

From the lay of the steel armouring....may I suggest a submarine telegraph cable? BY.
-
Man-flu! >:-o
-
Bryan questions the possibility....."a submarine telegraph cable?"
I had researched the possibility of an old [1900's] submarine cable from Perth to Darwin then on to Singapore, however with ZERO results
We certainly have a cable from Perth to Indonesia, however this is relatively new
Current undersea cables are synthetic [plastic] sheathed, earlier cables [1890+] were rubber sheathed......Derek

The best book on the making of Jaws ever written, The Jaws Log by Carl Gottlieb. My original 1970s copy is falling to bits. In return I bought my sister a tin opener mounted on a varnished mahogany plinth, with the instructions "In Emergency, TWIST!"

Nice boat to build Guy.
I enjoyed thoroughly building the prototypes that MBD kits are based on....I took them over to Frank Kowalsky, the owner of Safehaven Marine in Cobh and had a look around his factory and on one of the boats he was building at the time....fabulous trip.
here's a couple of shots of the originals.
and they'll stand up to am amazing amount of punishment if waterproofed correctly, lol

Enjoy the build.

Stunning performance Niel in the video & a beautiful boat as well, you sir are to be congratulated, you give so much to the model boating hobby, thank you. Mick B.
-
Incredible footage there! felt a bit seasick just watching it.Amazing models Neil, but Orange/yellow tops?????
Mick F
-
Neil,
what motors/ props are you running ?
GB
-
hi Guy, in the experimental one I put two torpedo 800's but they were far too slow......had I kept the one for myself I would have gone down the brushless route.....but all 3 boats went to Safehaven Marine.

Cheers Mickb.
and Mick F...........we couldn't get the colour right for the Cork Pilot Boat "Gleann Mor" which was a cross between the orange and the yellow......and so Frank Kowalski the owner asked me to paint in as near colour as he had provided on the photos he sent me.It should have been a colour like the old Citroen AX/saxo car but I couldn't find any halfords paints to match.
At the time the RNLI were doing evaluation tests on the Interceptor 42' as a replacement for the Mersey and that is why I built the self righting boat as well for Safehaven marine to show the RNLI that they were self righting, and the RNLI were in the closing stages of deciding either to go ahead with the Interceptor or a French boat, similar to the "beak boats" as their new FAB 2 , and so I took a gamble and made the orange topped boat for myself, equipping it with bow thruster and twin motors and painting it in RNLI orange for if the RNLI took options on the boat I would have had the first model of an RNLI prototype on the water and in Dave Metcalfs hands as I gave him the plugs for mouldings.......in the end it backfired on me as the RNLI chose the Shannon (still a mistake in my mind....but I'm biased).....and so my boat came out orange.
In the end, when I sent pics of the two boats together Frank told me he wanted both boats, so I ended up without any boat at all...........still fancy building one for my own use one day.
-
cheers neil,
i have now opted to go brushless.... 2 x 800 kv.....but prop set up may be the next puzzle, dont want to ' over prop' the model, took it for a test today with 50mm props ...great turn of speed but killed a 12 volt 7amp hr pack in minutes....
.... still need to get a load of fittings for her, nav lights, fenders, -just got 2 crew figures completed, need some decals for the liferaft canister and other bits n bobs too....
good to see it all coming together !- mine will be done as ' culverwell'..... was great to hear how your 2 models came about and their colours and where they went !
the self righting video is awesome..... i dont plan of doing that though !!!
safehaven website gives loads of great images and data....
happy new year to you !
-
and to you Guy, and many more to come.
ps......how about a build log of one of your fabulous lego boats next.
how about a lego Lifeboat (preferably an old classic)
neil.
-
its been discussed !!!!!- barry stevens said something similar in november !
some of my favourites are rothers and solents.....or are you thinking older ?
you never know 2013 might be the year i actually make a start on it ...
( along with completing my half completed bibber sub, clyde puffer, atlantic 75, 'fake' steam launch, and interceptor )
GB
-
a Rother rather than a Solent please! I expect Neil will say something even older, and I will agree with that! Whatever you decide on,I am sure it will be an excellent interpretation.

Any old lifeboat would be incredible to watch Guy, as I find the Trawler and yacht that you built are just amazing.
being a kid of the 50/ 60's I grew up with lego but never ever thought that they could have made such amazing models..........so an old lifeboat of that period would be amazing.
