Title: Receiver and batteries - Help!

Hi,
 
I'm new to this forum and model boat building, only having a Toys R us £15 cheap deal boat before. Yesterday, for some reason, people gave me presents ( ;) ) including a Robbe Paula 3 buoy layer kit, and I am confused with the receiver system.
 
I have a Viper marine 15 electronic speed control unit (ECU), which says it has a 1.2amp BEC installed inside. Does this mean my reciever doesn't need a battery, as the receiver instructions says that it needs one?

Dan,
"BEC" = Battery Eliminator Circuit.  You do not need a seperate battery pack for the receiver.
There should be a radio style wire coming out of the ESC...you plug that into the battery socket on the receiver.

Thanks for the reply, and correcting my wrong abbrieviation! Does that mean I can run my three other servos off the ESC? It says its is 1.2amp.

Plug the speed controller into the reciever and ALSO the other servos in as well plug your Batt to the speed controller and it WILL WORK NO other batts needed

Thanks for the reply. On the subject of a battery, It is a 6V, which is what the motor needs. However the transmitter and receiver instructions say that the receiver needs 4.8V. As it is going to get its power from the drive battery through the ESC, it that voltage difference a problem?
 
Also, anyone interested in a build blog? Im fitting it with a working crane and lights!

I thought the esc connected into the receiver via the channel you want to control the speed from. The battery socket is not used. The BEC will be corrected to the correct voltage for the receiver.

the speed controller plugs into the receiver channel for speed control and the bec in the speed controller will limit the voltage for the receiver to 4.8 volts

Thanks for all of your help. Im sure there'll be a lot more questions coming your way soon, and as a beginner in the hobby, I am very gratefull for ANY advice you can give, so please comment it on here if you have any. :D
 
The only other question I have now is; does anyone know where you can get a good, cheap 6V battery??

if its Gell cell ( sealed lead acid ) battery your looking for you could look here

the higher the amp hour the battery is the bigger and heavier it is so you will need to know how much extra weight the model will need to sit to its waterline and workout the size of battery that will fit ie access and weight for the model , im not familiar with that kit so cant advise what battery is best for it

As long as the main battery is giving more than 5 volts, the BEC will provide a regulated 5 volts for the receiver and any servos plugged into it.  The instructions for the RX don't assume that an ESC with a BEC fitted will be used, so generic information only is supplied.  They probably don't even consider use in a boat.
The kit instructions probably specify a particular battery, probably a Robbe  part number.  A quick check should show that it is a generic type of SLA, and any battery of the same voltage and capacity will weigh the same, have the same dimensions and do the job, but almost certainly at lower cost.  Much the same applies with motors, as well.
