Model Boat Mayhem

A few years ago I purchased this little red unfinished boat.
The hull is made from ply, the ribs and supports in balsa. Along with a cute and little if not winy motor :}
It has the style of an Eeze bilt kit, something similar to the Neptune or Mermaid http://eezebilt.hobby-site.com/Range.html (http://eezebilt.hobby-site.com/Range.html) but on the model the prop is right at the stern either in error or as it should be ?.
The motor would appear to drive the prop by using I assume rubber bands.
Any help appreciated
Looking at the above site I can say that it is not the Mermaid or Neptune looking at the build instructions.

Hi Longbuild,
Sorry, don't know the boat, but I think that this is your motor.
Dave
-
Motor is a "Mighty Midget" by Victory industries, Length and beam of boat might help?
Regards Ian.
Posting at same time David, VIP were responsible for the Plastic Crash Tender, same motor, also used in the cars they made.

The prop is almost level with the stern as the rudder rould be fitted to the transom and a toothed quadrant fitted to the deck.
The rudder would have a tiller arm that engaged with the teeth to allow the rudder to be set.

This looks suspiciously like a straight runner to me

The motor probably dates it to the late '50's, early'60's, so pre small radio. Everything was a straight runner then.
Any rudder fitted, probably off the transom, would have been not so much for steering, as a trim tab to compensate for side winds or hopefully causing it to travel in a curve, causing it to return to the same bank. Looking at the pictures, it looks like a sloped transom - that might have been a sticking point for the original builder and why it was never completed.

Hello always nice to see a Mighty Midget motor, the armature is a very well made commercial, rather than toy item. I use a Mighty Midget in my Hobbies Anglian trawler (no RC) and find that the best drive bands are the small ones found around spring onions and the like, so when you next visit Sainsburys a close inspection of the salad produce could be useful. (There are other Stores available).
This is an early motor and it also came without the bearings for a gear train, also the brush design could vary. Much used in early non proportional servos.
About 3 watts max output, I think if used as a straight runner in competition one could have a teas break waiting for her to arrive.
The boat hull does not ring any bells for me, what are the dimensions?
regards to all, Roy

Tornado and Telectra designs both had the "Rear hung" prop and virtually flat bottomed transoms but both designs had twin rudders either side of the prop shaft. As the hull doesn't seem to have seen a drive unit fitted, perhaps the "work in progress" would have answered the question.
Regards Ian.

Hi ya there is this not a model made from the Hobbys Weekly plan - I think it may have originally been called Patricia? If you do a search of the forum I myself built one - the year I was born :-) I built her slightly differently to the plan though; I will dowload some photographs which will follow shortly.

hi ya there; TheLongBuild - Tomorrow I will try and post some photographs of the rudder and back end of the boat. I seem to be having a bit of a problem putting photographs and adding a post at the same time - keeps timing out for some unknown reason. The photographs need to be resizing as well.
Anyhow, the rudder on the model which I build, I altered it slightly as I cut a slot in the back of the hull to allow the tiller arm from the rudder to go through and connect up to a mini servo which is mounted in the back of the boat. I believe that on the plans, this is not the chosen method obviously, because they didnt have mini servos in those days :-) the tiller arm came up over onto the back deck and set into a ratchet afair. I am (to be honest) trying to find the magazine and plans but somewhere I have misplaced them. I know Martin Mayhem may have copies cos I remember receiving the originals back from Martin and I have put them some SAFE - that safe I cant find them ;-) .

Thanks.
I have bid on the mag, so see how that goes, failing that could ask Martin to see if he has a copy as he is supposed to be on light duties !!
-
I've just noticed that I do in fact have an original copy of the magazine & plan so could scan it & post the images on here if it'd be helpful?
Anyway - let me know & I'll sort it in the morning...
Mark
-
All would be useful,if you don't mind :-))
-
Scans as promised, unfortunately this is all that's in this magazine and the article is concluded "in next week's issue"....
That'll be 9th March 1955 then :-)
Hope this helps.
Mark
(Will upload in a couple of posts as the site doesn't seem to work otherwise).

Finally:

Thanks for those Mark
They explain the rudder, now I see it it makes sense. Looks like the builder stopped at that stage.
Thanks all for the info... :-)) :-))
-
hi there TheLongBuild, couple of pics of the back of the boat
You will see how I modified the servo arm into a long slot to take the tiller arm and also I have included a pic of the motor setup the motor is from somewhere :-) but the speed controller is an ACTion P68A and it runs off the receiver pack for the radio gear so its limited to the max of 6 volts which is ideal I think for this type of small model. Hope you have some fun completng this model off cos they are a nice little model when they are finished.

Thanks for those pictures John. :-))
Not much left to do really on the model, even I should be able to sort that out by next year %%
