GUYS
is polyester as good as epoxy resin to coat the inside of a wooden model ? poly is a lot cheaper , will IT hold on as good ? crack if it gets knocked ?
i used gorilla glue mostly to build the model and am very disappointed with it >>:-( ,
its great till you scrap of the access then it has no strength and is full of air bubbles like foam ( GOOD ON GARDEN GNOMES :} )
so now i have cleaned the in side up i want to coat it about 1/4 inch thick in the bottom with a resin
and then put a thin sheet of FB cloth on the out side
way is epoxy the preferred resin ? is it easy-er to use
thanks BOB

Hi Bob,
Epoxy for me every time.
Epoxy is water and vapour proof, flexible, and only needs a protective coat of paint or clear polyurethane to protect from the sun's uv.
Mrine epoxies are formulated specifically to protect and seal wood.
Polyester on the other hand is not water or vapour-proof (actually dissolves in water given time), needs a gel-coat or paint to protect it from the water. Not very flexible in thick layers, even with glass fibre reinforcment. Ok in thin layers.
The price reflects the better product.
You pays your money and takes your choice

polyester resin has absolutely NO strength at all unless mixed with fibres, and will crack very easily, but have never used epoxy resin so apart from the first statement..can't really compare

thanks guys i guess ill cough up the $40 for a liter of EPOXY resin then

The three main epoxies sold here in Aus are R180 which is a 5 to 1 mix, West System which is also a 5 to 1 mix and Bote Cote which is a 2 to 1 mix, the first two work fine but take care to get the ammounts spot on or you will have issues, I use alot of Bote Cote, I find the 2 to 1 mix easyer plus it can be worked with a heat gun to make it runnyer and give a nice even finish.
Google boatcraft pacific, they are the cheapest for epoxies, glues and fillers and are great to deal with, plus their website is easy to order from.
