Hi guys I thought I would post up my Carol Moran Build. I bought it from Tim B. along with a billings coastboat Bent that he has already planked the hull on. I was going to work on the 2 boats at the same time but got wrapped up into the tug as it was going well I started this 14 days ago and its the farthest I have ever gotten on a scale boat build. Heres some pics of my progress.

Hi Hazegry that is looking really nice :-)) How long is she?
I am building the Mirium moran at the moment but at 1/24th scale.
-
shes a whole 17 3/4" inches long or 450.85mm so not very big but a fun little project.
-
Thanks a lovely boat are you going R C. Her? :-)
-
yup I am going to run the dumas 4.8v motor and run the boat off a receiver pack.
-
well done I look forward to seeing more of the build as you progress. :-)) :-))
-
Great Scott, Great Tugs !
-
just ran across something that's not in the instructions when it tells you to paint the roof it doesn't reference painting the underside I am using the same green I used on the hull. I don't know if its correct or not but I have seen many tugs done this way so that's what I am doing. paint the underside and top of the roof before you glue it on.
-
Hello hazegry, the colour schemr that Moran gave me for mine is as follows. I don't know if the older tugs are the same I should think they are.
Hull above the water including the bulwarks, Moran Hull green
Inside of Bulwarks Black
hull below the waterline, Red oxide anti fouling
Main casing and wheelhouse Moran casing Red
Main deck Moran deck red
texas or bridge deck and the wheelgouse roof Light gray
all hanrails around decks Light gray
Grabrails around casings Black
deck overhangs and visor White
And all paint exept the anti fouling is Gloss.
Moran towage were kind enough to send me a complete set of plans for the Mirium as well as a set of paint samples of their In house colours A brilliant company to deal with.
All the best george.
If you have a B&Q near you the colour Nos for having the paint mixed are,
Hull Green 95YY07091
deck red 5050Y90R
casing red S5540y90R
-
Thanks tug all the Moran tugs that pull us in and out never look glossy but they are working boats and don't stay pristine for very long. I need to go out to the base and get pics of them I guess. What I have is pretty close to what you do so its reasonable to assume there has been some change over the years, and this is a 50's version so I am going to stick to the paint description in the plans from Dumas. I do appreciate the info though as I may want to build a large one later on.
-
No Problem matey all the best. :-))
-
I got the stand done all it needs now is the plaque but that wont go on until the boat is finished.

Hello!!!!
Congratulations for your model, she’s looking very good.
Moran use to paint a white line on the hull to their tugs, Dumas don’t say anything about it, but I believe the tugs look better with it
Send you a picture of my Carol, best regards
-
Hello!!!!
Another thing, the instructions do not mention anything about the tool boxes (The red ones on the main deck), but they are marked in the general plan and you do have the resources to do them inside the kit.
Best regards
-
Escipion, thanks for the pics and info, how did you detail out your doors they look really good.
-
(https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/603143_541517859205554_154677693_n.jpg)
got the mast on and put the windows on the pilot house I also got the side bits cut but haven't glued them on yet
-
Escipion, thanks for the pics and info, how did you detail out your doors they look really good.
Hello!
For the door details:
Some rectangular pieces from a business card to make the representation of the hinges, and the handles are made with brass rods (sorry, don’t remember the diameter)
Best regards
-
Thanks man I got the side bits and the mooring bits done before going to bed last night
(https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc6/263384_541602119197128_1513617540_n.jpg)
-
ok been messing with the crane I thought I would try making my own what do you guys think keep it or scrap it and use the one in the kit.
-
cool, :-))
keep it
vnkiwi
-
well gave it another go and this is what I got
(https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/25977_542037165820290_1696589509_n.jpg)
-
ok so I am going to keep the bent crane and I got the funnel done and the doors and front stairs done tonight.
I would also add that if at any point in the plan it tells you have just enough material to do something go to the hobby shop and buy some extra. I didn't mess anything up but having the reserve supply was allot less nerve wracking. for the stairs I glued the notched sections together with the spacer in the middle then glued the styrene steps on with some overhanging both sides (this is where the extra came in) and once it dried I trimmed it flush with the side and glued the outer skins on. The plans call for you to glue the front stairs together then slowly sand each step to fit my way was faster and my stairs are all the perfect size with no gaps.
-
Hello!!!
Looking good, congratulations
Something that I recommend you to change is the motor, the instructions show you how to use a servo as motor, I feel it do not have enough power. I install a 4.8V Dumas motor and works really fine
Best regards
-
I am thinking the same thing and plan on using the 4.8 motor.
-
This one's Really shaping well, looking like the best job anyone's done on this kit, taking it past what Dumas had intended.
Bravo !
-
well went to the LHS and got a 3 blade prop it looks so much better than the 2 blade plastic prop that came with the kit.
-
did some detailing on some of the small bits and made my own eyelets since I lost a few out of the kit.
-
Hello!!!
Looks great that propeller
-
it better for 20 bucks lol
I made a bunch of little dogs out of .05mm brass and glued them on the doors
(https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/774260_544045238952816_133001428_o.jpg)
I think shes coming along as soon as my little drill bits get here I will do the railings and paint the main cabin then everything can get glued on.

dressed up the manhole covers what do you guys think?
-
well just need to spray the lower cabin red the green is from spraying the underside of the roof. I am having mixed feelings about putting the lockers on the boat I may just leave them off.
-
well I got the bottom cabin painted I just need to do some touch up around the lip and paint it white. I haven't glued anything to the cabin yet because I don't want to make putting the railings on difficult. (my drill bits for that haven't shown up yet.) well heres the pics.
-
Hello!!!!
Nice work, I’d got into more work because first build the cabin with the rails, and then painted it.
I’m following with attention your project :-))
Best regards
-
Just love your green hull colour and I definitely want it for my Tosher build. Which brand is it please?
Dave
-
its testors Model Master FS 34102 Medium Green it is enamel I read somewhere it reacts badly with other brands so you may want to test it first to be sure it will work.
-
Thanks for the information. If I can get it I will stick to one brand.
Dave
-
I got the white trim painted around the cabin it really sets the boat off.

well I couldn't put it off anymore so I soldered up the railings tonight it took all day I had surgery on my Jaw today so moving a bit slow, but I think taking my time paid off every joint is clean and doesn't need clean up work.

Well here she is my finished1/24th scale Moran tug the, Miriam moran, now all I need is some ice free water to try her out on
Sorry for butting in again Hazegry your build is looking really great :-)) :-))
-
Really nice builds gents, following closely. Nice to see the railings template in a kit, not seen one before - was it accurate hazegry?
Regards, Tony. :-))
-
from other threads I have read its accurate I will know if it is or not when my drill bits get here and I can fit it to the deck but when I hold it up to the deck now it looks good. Tugmad post away you really did a great job on your tug thanks for sharing.
-
well the railings are on and the pattern worked out real well took a bit to get it finished but I think it looks good for my first time doing railings.
-
They do add something. Nice work. :-))
Ken
-
ok I pickled the railings what is it you ask you use copper etching solution and etch the railings this helps the paint adhere and makes it less likely to pop off. heres how David Merriman explained it to me
copper alloys are poor substrates for paint adhesion. Pickling is the
process of introducing microscopic pits by acid/alkyd attack. Once pickled, you rub off the excess oxidized metal (do not sand or polish) and lay down the primer. The primer will stick very, very well. Don't do this and the primer-paint will eventually shrug off the work.
Brush on the Ferric Chloride and scrub it into the metal with the
brush till the metal darkens a bit. Then come back with fresh water spiked
with a little baking soda, and scrub to kill the acid. Rinse with fresh water, dry, and prime.
-
not much work done on the boat today but did get this.

ok all the brass is done, the pilot house is glued and screwed to the cabin, the funnel was pinned and glued to the cabin(I thought this would make for a stronger hold and keep me from loosing the mast in the event of a collision while on the lake.) stil needing to be done portholes on lower cabin, lace lifeboat, lace davit, rig mast, install motor and electronics, ballast and go have some fun!

-
Wooow, that portholes really look great :-))
-
thanks E, I went to the hobby shop today and had them test the brand new esc and see if they can figure out why it wasn't working and the magic blue smoke soon poured out of it. I got lucky it happened there and they gave me a replacement.
-
well went through 2 more esc's at the hobby shop they marked it up as a defective batch and gave me one from a different brand (a traxxas) everything is working good now and all that's left is to weather the boat.
-
Defective batch indeed !
At least your off and running, looking forward to a water test !
Did you get any of that heavy snow ?
-
Well the new one is working well if the weather improves I my give her a test run today. Tim we didnt get any snow however I did go over to a friends house to learn how to weather a model he has built models for hollywood so he knows his stuff. I came home and ordered a new airbrush and some iron paint that will form actual rust. The hull is gong to be weathered but the superstructure will stay mostly clean. I looked at allot of pics of the moran tugs and it seems captins were very strict about keeping the superstructure clean and tidy even if the hull looked a little rough. I am still working on the rope bumpers they are going to take a long time to finish so I will finish detailing the rest of the boat and then add them once they are complete.
-
well went out and test ran the boat and she did well. She turns quickly and looks scale even at full speed.
