Title: Red Oxide Colour
Post by: Richardjm on January 13, 2013, 11:20:55 am
Hi All
I want to use a Humbrol enamel to represent red oxide on a sailing trawler. I dont care if it is gloss or matt as I will overspray satin when finished. I used No 73 before and was happy but this time I would like a colour that is slightly redder. Any suggestions please, I do intend to stick to enamel and want to do my own spraying so Halfords cans will not do although I have used them successfully on other models.

Thanks

I cannot help you with a Humbrol colour. But I used Red Oxide Primer Spray cans. Nice colour, and easy to apply..

Far better than the made up colour I had before....

Try looking at the white ensign range of enamels. I've used the WW2 Royal Navy anti fouling red to good effect on my destroyer https://www.whiteensignmodels.com/c/Colourcoats+Naval+Colours/19/1/ (https://www.whiteensignmodels.com/c/Colourcoats+Naval+Colours/19/1/)

Alternatively, go into a paint shop and ask them to mix you BS381C 446 Red Oxide. They should be able to do it in either 250 or 500mls cans.
If you want more than a Humbrol sized can but less than 250 mls. Try Phoenix Paints. They are a model train mob who do British Standard colours in various sizes in either Matt, Low Sheen or Gloss. http://www.phoenix-paints.co.uk/ (http://www.phoenix-paints.co.uk/)

Hi
Would agree with  Bowman.  Halfords Red Oxide primer gives a good colour, but you have to overcoat it with lacquer,I use satin, as the primer is pourous and needs sealing.

As long as it is Not a wooden hull then it does not need to be overcoated with laquer

Hi all

Thanks for your help. It is a wooden scratch built hull and I am going to finish it with a satin varnish. A trip to Halfords first I think before I investigate the other suggestions.

Right then as it is a wooden Hull may I suggest you seal the hull with Halfords car laquer and then red oxide the hull then you wont have to laquer the Red oxide as the hull will allready be sealed

Thanks Dave
Hull is already sealed with aeromodelling dope which I have used before and works well.

White Ensign Models is a great site, new to me.

somewhat belatedly I have primed the hull. I used Halfords red oxide as suggested by Bowman and I think the colour is perfect. I will spray the finished hull with a satin finish to seal it . Thanks for the help.
