Title: Name the Ship - 2013
Post by: tony52 on January 13, 2013, 08:01:47 pm
Hi, can anyone identify the ship and Manchester Ship Canal tug in the background (not the MSC Talisman)?

Thanks, Tony.

I don't know what the boat is, but the photo is from the book, The Big Ditch, by Cyril J. Wood.
I dare say that the info you're after would be in there.

Looks very much like M.S.C. Onset passing Old Quay Yard at Runcorn, my home town.

Hi, TailUK, the M.S.C. Onset looks correct, further research on the internet confirms
adros, took a look at a friends book and no information inside, the photo appears inside but no further info. Took a magnifying glass to the front cover and the name is still not clear but some letters can be read -- ?????LI?T. Ordered a copy of the book for myself as it is an excellent publication.
Slightly off thread the last dock cranes at the Salford end of the MSC are due demolition. Salford Council are to pay in the region of £100,000 to have them demolished as against the £1 million restoration costs. Quite understandable with the budget restraints in the current finanacial situation.

Take your point on restoration costs but wonder how much to have simply made them safe and painted? Sort of iconic and if you like an Art structure in themselves.

Came across some drawings in an old encyclopedia of 1950's merchant ships. Here is No1 of 12.  -- Name the Ship?--

It looks a lot like Port Brisbane, one of the Compass Line's three "Port" ships.

This is an image of The Cunard Alsatia/Andria.

Now without wanting to be a killjoy, please be very careful about posting images such as these as they are still subject to copyright. Although it is small chance, the copyright holder may find out about them being reproduced here and send you and Martin a large invoice for infringing their copyright. Believe it or not, there are companies and individuals that do scour the media looking for copyright infringement, of all types, and who then find, or can be retained by, the owner of the copyright who then may or may not, send you a letter and said invoice. Such people generally make a very nice living by doing so as well.

So to avoid any problems in the future: 1) Use only your own images, 2) Images that you have been given permission to use on a public forum and can prove it, 3) images already in the public arena i.e. RN or USN images, 4) those out of copyright.

Copyright these days can be a touchy subject with some people, and whilst some people may find it trivial, others don't.

Point taken LB. Thanks I didn't realise images of this age were still copyright. The last thing I would like to do is present Martin with a large bill.
