Surprise surprise?

I think its a shame to be honest, although all the 'evidence' in this story hasn't seemed to stack up.

Its a real shame. It would have been great if it had been true, think of the airshow opportunities!

I think that they were kidnapped by three yeti and Lord Lucan spirted them away on the back of Shergar to the Moon. Some people are SO gullible...

And one day having finished a night shift I heard on the radio that due to a certain tide etc configuration - the Mersey was at it's lowest for a hundred years. The only water flowing was from its source and most of the riverbed was on view. Dog tired I decided I just couldn't miss the event. I got on a bus and got as far as Water St ..... then realised it was April Fools {-) {-) {-) O0 absolutely true.

They were P38 Lightnings (and a B17, I believe, which was squashed flat). They got one P38 out (Glacier Girl), but the others are still there I believe.
What I find odd about the Spitfires (and I'd love for something to be found), is that if they just wanted to get rid of them to stop them being used by anyone else, why bother to go to the effort of burying the things? It would be so much easier if they just bulldozed the lot into a pile in the middle of the airfield, poured on several gallons of petrol and set fire to the lot.
All you'd be left with is a pile of aluminium "xxxxx".

(That said s.l.a.g. - the profanity filter's working overtime on standard English now!)

Is all hope really lost? I'm a real clinger-on to dreams....not another one dashed I hope. BY.

There seems to be a bit of optimistic reporting on this.
"unused, unassembled Spitfires were packed into crates and buried"
Suggests to me that they weren't in what I would call a state of being a plane, more like a kit.
In that climate I'd think being buried was fairly effective as a disabler as corrosion would set in quite quickly.

For those interested, the search has now officially been called off.
