A Campbeltown 80' siene netter built between me and my grandad, sorry about some of the pictures, i used my phone to take them. the real boat was built in 1975 by Campbeltown Shipyard for Jim Campbell, Lossiemouth, she had a 565 hp Catapillar engine and was renamed Arcturus INS.167 in 1985 and then Alert INS.55 in 1999, she was later decommissioned in 2002, the first photo, isn't mine i was just using it to show what the real boat looks like

a few more pics
-
and some more

more
-
a few more updates
-
a lovely model Cam..........looking very very nice indeed.
neil.
-
Hi Cam..Looking good, following with interest, keep posting..Rod :-))
-
cheers Neil and thanks Rod were getting there now. already got the next one on the stocks, i was given a static model of the Boston Typhoon that had been stood on by removal men, i'll get some pics of her soon.
-
Nice to see Cam
One thing I have noticed is the forward thinking
in the electrical dept.
Most build blogs seem to leave the wiring out
and the lights appear by magic!
A good pointer for newbie.
Ned
-
thanks Ned its like spaghetti junction under the wheelhouse. haha
-
Hi Kam is that a hull from bill wood in aberdeen --- you are making a good job --Charlie
-
Cheers Charlie, yeah it's a Bill Wood hull, got this one and a beam trawler from him
-
Iok Cam Ihave one of his PD Favoius hulls
-
They're good strong built hulls aren't they
-
Yes they are but the one i have needs a lot of cleaning up rough edges ete but given time i will get there i also have a hull of the harvest moon FR but i believe she is now in orkney as norlatean K51
-
Norlantean II K508 wicker , she's just been sold to Whitehills to replace 2 lost trawlers and she's now renamed Beryl BF440 ( Colin and his Brother lost the Onward BF and Beryl BF440 in the last 2 years when both sunk , Onward to burst pipe or sprung plank and the Beryl to fire )
-
Thanks Davie for that info--i have not started building yet the hull is just lying collecting dust in my shed---Charlie
-
the lights and radars are now working and all are on seperate switches
-
looking good Cam --- when is the launching
-
had her down the lake this morning for a trial, i got some pictures but i didn't notice till later that there was no memory card in the camera and i cant find the lead for it either haha
-
Looks really good Cam
As for the camera well as they say
Worse things happen at sea :-))
The Cygnus looks to be in Moth balls O0
Ned
-
cheers Ned, we put the covers over the boats to protect them from the dust, because theres always somthing that needs sanding in there, some boats are lucky enough to make it into the living room haha
-
Cam --she is looking really good can just see it ploughing through the waves--Charlie
-
cheers Charlie, got a few more things do to her now, hand rail round the house, railings round the whale back and the names have been put on also got the pond boards in and the power block is nearly finished, will put some photos on tomorrow
-
Nice lighting Cam, just adds a bit of life I think.
Are you going to have any crew?
Dave
-
Hi Dave, cheers, I've got some of the George Turner 1:32 scale fishermen to go on, still got plenty to do on her yet, got the rope reels to put on. And I need to make a seine net, I've worked with 1:1 scale seine nets before but never done a 33:1 seine net haha
-
a few more updates, before anyone says, i know the place is a mess, but its a tidy mess, we know where everything is haha and the power block is working (on a servo), the lettering is from Barry's Model Lettering and the crew man is a bit grumpy isn't he? probably watched that hughs fish fight the other night, load of rubbish. sorry about the quality of some of the pictures, i took the with my phone.
-
:o Wow, looks great!
I'll keep watching.
Hama
-
Hope you send JJim Campbell some photos when finished
-
Thanks Hama, hi Charlie, Jim knows I'm building her, I was asking him what was under the shelter, kindly he sent me some drawings for the shelter, I've not spoke to him for a while, ill send him some pics when shes finished
-
my grandad has been very busy over the last week or so whilst ive been at sea, i did do the names on the fish boxes though
-
Hi Cam that is the best looking model of a Campbelltown vessel that i have seen makes me think of getting one of Bill Woods hulls
-
Hi Charlie, thanks, my grandad has been doing alot of work on her cause I was at sea for a good few days last week, shes brilliant on the water and very stable, I was speaking to Jim last week, he said it has been worth the wait, I'm glad he likes it.
-
Did you build it for Jim
-
Hi Charlie, no I didn't build it for him, I just preferred the Andromeda to the other campbeltown boats, the red stood out a bit more, it was either going to be Jim's Andromeda or Cyril Scott's Aquarius
-
I thought if Jim had it it could be shown at a model show in Elgin in November when our club display their boats
-
Do you have many trawlers in your club Charlie? Me and my grandad are the only ones who have trawlers in our club, we go away to England every year to Haydock racecourse to display our boats, buts quite expensive to travel off the island, the ferrys are very pricey, does your club have a website?
-
Our club have 15 members and there are only a handful of trawlers. Elgin or Aberdeen are as far as we travel I have been at the Blackpool show the last two years and booked again for this year. We have a small local show in May and i wiil take photos and send to you
-
Cheers Charlie, our club is faily small a few of our members go to blackpool but they don't take any boats, just go for the traders.
-
finaly on the water, and i remembered to put the card in the camera
-
Really good looking--- bound for the bergen bank now
-
Haha, one of em looks like she's just left Lossie harbour, as you say bound for the grounds :-))
-
I Cam very nice model I have just painted the bottom of my sf33 hull from models by design hope to have it ready for mid May for or show
-
Cheers, is that the one with the bulbous bow? We've got the older style gm38, fantastic model to build because they can fish for anything, we've got creels, dredgers, Queenie trawl and a net hauler on ours, very heavy boats though haha
-
YEP BULBOUS BOW VERSION
-
Photos please Wicker
I have two gm33's to build one fwd and one aft wheelhouses.
I need all the inspiration going for fittings as at 1/16 there is not much ready made
Ned
-
Ned I need all the inspiration I can get because I dont know at this stage if she will be fitted as a creeler or an under 10mtr trawler maybe Cam might post a photo of the one he has or works on
-
i'll stick a couple of photos of my Cygnus model on in a bit, I work on a under 15m beamers/scalloper
-
I have some photos from Can
Milk tubs from the cafes make good baskets/buckets for fish
The aft wheelhouse versions are hard to find.
Ned
-
heres a couple of photos of the cygnus showing the dredgers, creels and about to shoot the trawl , and heres a link to some more close up shots (lifting the gear)

-
my milk tub baskets are no longer a secret haha, always getting asked how i made them at shows and down the lake
-
I think I will stick to a creel boat---less hassle
-
my one has had a few alterations over the years, never used to have a queenie machine, and no net drum and instead of the goalposts, she used to have a single deck crane
-
I will make this one I have a creeler and I have net drum windows etc for the 1/12th scale model so that could be a build of the future but if anyone wants to buy them they can be free to make an offer
-
not alot done recently but we now have a combination winch, still needs drum ends
-
Hi Cam I fond a kit for the trawl winch for my sf33 but there is no winding on gear or braking system so i think i might make something my self
-
Hi Charlie, we use a radar motor and a reversing switch to shoot and haul the gear, never shot and hauled a seine net with a model, could be trickier than just hauling up and shooting away a trawl haha
-
it will be a static model no motors to go wrong cheers for now--going away on holiday for 10 day--charlie
-
Hi Can
I now have the two 1/16 gm33 hulls
Fore and aft Wheelhouses.
I have got the running gear sorted
but the bilge keels are a problem
On the plan I have the fore and aft position
is OK but the distance from the keel
doesn't look right.
Any advice would be appreciated
Ned
-
enjoy your holiday Charlie. Hi Ned are the bilge keels too close or too far away from the keel?
-
The plan I have shows them 5 1/2 " long
Then it says 2 1/8" below bottom edge
rubbing strake and Around 2 1/4" hull o /side edge of keel
Ned
-
sorry Ned, I cant help you on that, my Cygnus hasn't got any bilge keels, is there no pictures of any gm33's on trawler photos showing the bilge keels, Davie Tait might be able to help you
-
Ned i just put them on where i though they should be--i had no drawings--charlie
-
Try here
Damn, the link didn't work.
But nice photos on
trawlerphotos.co.uk
cheers
vnkiwi
-
winch motorised and ready to go in
-
winch now in, stuck the trawl on cause we haven't got the rope reels for the seine net yet
-
Lovely job Can
Must have a slow crew though
Not cleared the pounds and the next
tow is hauled with the bag ready for
opening {-) {-)
Ned
-
thats just one haul, thats the second lift coming aboard haha :-)) we have to do that when were on the queenies, take one lift aboard and drop the net to take another, cheers Ned
-
Been on a few INS reg seiners and always had fish still on the deck everytime we hauled ( short ropes so between shooting the Dhan with 1 end of the ropes to getting the cod end aboard 45-50 minutes with 3 or 4 lifts per haul... Bergen bank in August ) , there's also another way of reading the INS ( Inverness ) registry Ned its been nicknamed for decades I Never Slept !!
-
what is the varnished ringer style model--Frey?
-
Maid of Erin CT.116, I built that a year or 2 ago, the real one was built for my great uncle Will in 1948 by J. Nobles, Fraserburgh, long before the Frey was built, I've got a build of it on here somewhere, heres a couple of photos of her, showing the different ways she used to fish, scallop dredging and prawn trawling, the real one also used to got to the seine net in the summer, theres also a photo of the real one, scalloping, my great uncle Will Watterson in the wheelhouse and my great uncle Alec Watterson standing next to the wheelhouse in a full smock
-
finally got the rope reels made and fitted to the Andromeda, so now shes rigged for seine netting like the real one was
-
Cam.....the grey/black material chosen for the winch wire looks most realistic..... :-)) ....& the layering or walking feed is also great.......Derek
(http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=41592.0;attach=128687;image)
-
cheers Derek, I used black herring twine that we use to mend our nets, the guiding on gear also moves along the runners like the real ones did
