Title: Interceptor 42
Post by: paul@bel on February 02, 2013, 07:44:55 pm
Hello All,
Started my second boat build in Oct last year of the Interceptor 42 from Models by Design,
Power is, 2 x 600Kv brushless outrunners, 2 x 100A ESC's, battery is a 12v 9A SLA but this may be replaced by 2 x 4s LiPo's at a later date, i will see when i can get to give it a test run...hopefully soon!!
Question, what paint finish does this type of boat have, Gloss or Satin/Eggshell ?
like i said this is only my second boat build so comments and criticism's will be greatly appreciated, the following photo's show where i am at with the build, more will follow as i progress,
Thanks for looking.

all gloss, apart from the none slip deck.

you can see the shine on these two....the new 48 foot intercepter, in consort with one of the older 42 footers.

took my interceptor for a test run yesterday, - i now  have 2x  800kv brushless motors and after messing around with about 5 different sets of props i am fairly happy with duration of run and also turn of speed....

will try and get  some static pictures up and maybe some video of the next run at the lake...

its an awesome model , very stable and for a 42 inch model its no slowcoach either...

Thanks Dan,
I am possibly going to make it more like a Harbour Master/Patrol boat, it will have a Police style light bar fitted, i have made the platform this week. Light bar is from, rcpolicelightbars.com

A bit more done to the cabin area, radar platform and mast made, I copied the size of the mast but made it with 8 & 6mm brass tube so the led wiring is hidden, when painted the radar motor will be added and the led's will have coloured diffusers fitted.

still need nav lights for mine, anyone got any ideas !

Guy,
My idea is 3mm LED's into the lamp housing, bend the legs 90 deg, then fit on to the board, drill 2 x 0.5mm holes in the cabin sides for the LED legs, then fit to the cabin, at least thats the theory!!

Thats what I have done to the Happy Hunter on the front mast and the Port/Stbd lights and it works a treat.

Sorry its been a while since my last post, but i have had chance to prep everything for painting,
as you will see the model is well erm.....Orange!!
most of the fittings are in Black so when they are fitted it should "tone" things down a bit, over the next few weeks i should be able to start fitting the model out.

Hello all,
Managed to fit most of the windows and frames this week, I will leave the back windows and door until the canopy is fitted, the top and side windows have been given a light spraying with Tamiya "smoke" this gives a slight tint although it does not seem to show up in the photos.

Thanks Derek,
I had the paint made up at a local car paint supplier, it is light orange, the code they put on the can is RAL.2008 they made up satin (hull & cabin) & matt (deck)
Hope this helps,
Paul.

Hello all,
After 3 hours of masking up the black has been sprayed on the hull, then another hour to de-mask!
For some unknown reason i didn't get clean edges on the hull sides ( i did use Tamiya masking tape) so some 4mm wide black strips were added to the edges, the stern area came out very nice, also the 6mm "D" section rubber fender has been cut and glued to the deck.

Have you tried using "Frog" masking tape Paul.....a little expensive but it's brilliant...no bleed at all.........only problem is it comes in wide.......and wide......no choice..............but a superb tape.

How long has the Tamiya tape been sitting around? I does seem to "go off" after a time once opened

Also another top tip
Stay away from pound shop masking tapes they are hopeless... they either suffer bleedthrough or leave a sticky residue

Thanks for all the comments guys,
Parts fitted this week are, handrail, canopy, rear cabin windows, frames and door,I have also fitted the rubber fender around the top of the hull.
Question, I want a 3-5mm white waterline, can i use trimline tape? used it for many years on RC Aircraft but i don't know if it is waterproof !!
Thanks Paul.

i have used car pinstriping tape for this, its designed to live outdoors .....so far had not troubles so long as preparation is good and there is no greasy fingers on the adhesive surface

Trimline is fine for boat use...I have used it on my yachts for years

Hello all,
Had a good week on the model, managed to put most of the deck fittings in place, I have decided to leave wiring up the LED's and radar motor until she has had a couple of "shake" down run's....just in case!!
A few weeks ago I thought I had made the wrong decision to go with the all over Orange, but now the fittings are in place I am very happy with the result.

that looks fantastic, - cant wait to hear how she handles on the water, and looking forward to seeing her with the lights wired up....

i have been messing around with different motors in mine, tried some 580 kv motors  along with the kit props but  not sure the set up is as good as my original one with smaller motors and  non scale props... plus it zapped the battery faster than i was expecting too

will continue to tinker until i am happy !
