Building a dual motor tugboat and not sure about motor selection. Any advice on where to start?
Plan to run the boat on 3s lipo power.
-
what size is the tugboat?
-
I think it's about 31 inches, it's the Model Slipway Al Khubar
-
Graupner was spec'g
Nominal voltage: 14.8 V
Operating voltage range: 7.4 ... 18.5 V
No-load speed: 13,320
Revs. / Volt (kV): 900
Permissible motor direction: R and L
Case length excl. shaft approx. 46 mm
Diameter approx. 35.2 mm
Free shaft length approx. 18 mm
Leen Boers has some G46 brushless in his Maersk Topper, the
KV rating he used was 420 for main drive.
I would think that you still need the ballast for
a boat the size of Al Khubar, couldn't you just use Gel Cells?
-
I could use gel cells but have lipos already. Gel cells are still an option. I want to make sure that whatever I put in will do what I need.

Now that is a seriously smart build!

I would use either a 28 mm out-runner rated at less than 1000 Kv and on 6 volts or DT700-700Kv which could run 12 volts (but a little throttle control needed) Im assuming the props will be around the 40 mm size, if they are smaller then either the voltage or Kv could be raised slightly.
Cheers

Hello Tbone ???
I made some months ago the first test sail with my new model of the Maersk Topper.
For all propulsion I use brushless motors.
For the bow (48MM) and sternthrusters (38MM) I use HK Turnigy XP 28 outrunners (750kv) and for the main (working) CPP (80mm) I use HK G46 motors.
In the first test the main brushless motor are so powerfull that the port CPP blocked in max pitch.
At the Dutch Working ship meeting last thursday it was teh second test, and after some starting problems the test was very succesfull.
Thr brushless motor are very powerfull, and after some modivications at the max turn of the blades , still the model is much to fast.
