Hi all,
Well after getting myself an Eldergarth, pre-built, I've sorted out some of the Wiring and given her a little sail this afternoon:

The boat did well overall, but as you might be able to make out, sits quite low in the water at her bow, so I think I need to get a lighter 12v battery and then just trim where needed.
Fully working, with Lights, working Winch, Bow Thruster and steerable korts as some of you will know.
The lights do work, but I only tested them quickly as I still need to set up the 6v system for them:

She shipped a bit of water earlier so something isn't quite watertight somewhere! %)
I'll be taking it along to Ellesemere port, after which, she'll have a good revamp and repaint ready for better weather!
Comments welcomed :-)
-
I see you changed the deck colour - better O0
Dave
-
Thanks Dave,
Do you mean the Fore or Aft deck? :-)
-
It was just an afterthought {-)
Dave
-
%% Oh dear - it's only Monday Dave! {-)
-
Looks great in cory(rea's) colours! Will you be at the sat night sailing to show off the lights? You best be ready to have a tow when your there mate
Gav
-
Hi Gav, apart from a quick paint job on the decks, it's stopping as it is for now.
Yeah I'm stopping for the Night sail no bother :-)) It's ready to tow - ropes and whatever else are ready!
-
I have just got myself into sanding the outer bulwarks of my tug putting new paint job on it and fitting loads of tyres so it looks like the actual tug
-
Should look a cracker that - get some pics up :-))

Hope this works
-
Very nice mate. :-))
-
Ta mate! Will look better in a week lol
-
Don't forget to get a 6v battery for those lights m8t or you will be drawing in light aircraft if you leave them on 12v {-) {-) {-)
-
Hahaha if he puts them on at Ellesmere Port the planes for Liverpool airport will try and land on the canal
-
...is that why we say "Plane sailing" ..... %) %% :o
...I'll get me coat!
-
Hahahahahaha taxi is waiting hahahahahah
-
Re-painted the Afterdeck green again - but a better shade this time - tidied it up and it already looks a lot better. Just need to give the Forward Decks a good re-paint now and it'll look rather nice me thinks.
Red or Green for the forward decks? I think Red forward, Green Aft.
Leaving the Superstructure as it is - it looks like a working boat as the white paint has ever so slightly dulled. Question - is there a supplier who can do an "R" big enough for the logo? Or is it a plasticard job?
Either the above or I'm thinking I may go my own way with the colour scheme...thoughts?
-
Do your thing Do your thing
Sorry had that song running in my head
Please no booty shaking %)
Dave
-
Dave there will be no Booty shaking in this thread %) {-) Just the subtle tones of Fleetwood Mac and some Blues/Rock guitar riffs from many legends like Dave Gilmour for example - that should get me through these boat builds!
-
Eldergarth enjoyed her outing at Ellesmere :-))

Thanks guys - had a fantastic time :-))
... infact, I had such a good time i'm looking at a new Tug build and a possible Tow to go with! (but what tug, and what tow?)
-
Defo not my norton Hahahahaha
-
ok2 Ok Gav - not your Norton ..... (yet) {-)
No I'm fancying a new build, or something that may be for sale for a decent price! Something along the lines of Svitzer's Ormesby Cross etc
-
Got to agree with adam it was a brilliant day & with the added bonus of buying a new tug :-)) :-)) :-)) .
Chris.
-
Yet haha :-)) am guna get a mmb asd hull maybe build a svitzer nari or make it as a smit tug maybe
-
Wondered when you might mention your new Tug Chris - :-)) It's a nice looking tug mind.
Go for it Gav - do a Smit tug, don't see a lot around lately. Nice colour scheme I think.
-
Haha Chris thinks he's 1 of the boys now haha just joking mate!
Ye got a couple of ideas for colour schemes just do something a little different than just svitzer colours!
-
that ormsby is a very big tug take a look at ,alcubar, nangee,or a bit bigger afon alaw, portgarth, dutch courage ,smit polen there are lots my personal fav combo is twin 60mm or 70mm props on stearable korts working winch maybe bow thruster my advice to you ad is come along to the next tug towing event and try as many tugs you can we all will be only too glad to help that applies to anyone that fancies a go just come see me i will get the ball rolling .
-
Hi Gav .I have no idea regarding a new colour scheme yet BUT I'll soon be sorted bud i'm out this week practicing towing :embarrassed: :embarrassed:
-
I agree with Steve his svitzer powerful is brilliant and to be fair when it works my norton is as good it's powerful enuff but not stupid and with the bowthruster is so manoeuverable!! Anythin bigger than your eldergarth is hard to get around the courses with the tow!
Good on you Chris that's all I done when I first started went as many tug tows as possible and teamed up with Steve and mike and they showed me the way! I had only ever done life size towing haha
-
Cheers lads - I think Chris will agree that were both more than up for coming along to your next meet for a bit of Towing. Just let us know when you plan to meet and we'll make the trip over! :-))
So - maybe i'll go for a Portgarth build. I quite like the size of the Eldergarth - but as appealing as the bigger boats are - I can see that manoeverability may become harder to acheive when you have a larger boat. Puts pilot skills to the test though {-) O0
-
I think it might be up balne Moore mate not sure tho am sure Steve will tell u!! Portgarth is a great tug and looks good as a model!
-
Cheers Gav. I'm looking at something that serves local to me, a Middlesbrough or Tyne based tug.
Could maybe look at Phoenix Cross? It's getting the plans and scaling down etc that would be a pain in the neck!
So until I'm used to towing, maybe Portgarth would be a sensible option and I can move to better, more detailed scratch builds later on. O0
-
This one makes into a great model Adam she used to be on the Tyne and also at Middlesbrough. :-)) :-))
-
Which one, Phoenix Cross or Portgarth? ;)
-
sorry Adam had a prob with photo
-
Chipchase the maltby hull is a monster hahahaha if I had space wouldn't mind 1 like haha

-
Lovely looking Tug - is there a hull available for this? and plans? :-)
-

-
here is a photo of the hull Adam
-
Guess who might be making some calls... %) Thanks Chipchase :-))
-
If I had a slight bit of the talent as chipchase to build the model I would the completed pic earlier is amazing!
-
Thanks Gav
-
I have to agree actually, the modelling there is superb. Lets hope I can do it some justice - even just a little bit!

-
Since were on the subject of Svitzer Tugs...

-

-
chip you are a bounder i am gona have to start mine now lol looks great mate :-))
-
the blue is called steel blue or starl blu and wheelhouse is manilla
-
:-)) Thanks Steve much appreciated

Quick question on the Svitzer Maltby - regarding Towing...
Are Shottles ok for Tug Towing? if so, what would you recommend, as I have never used shottles on a model before now.
If not - i'll put conventional Prop shafts in. :-))
-
Never used shottles but they have good control but don't think they have enough power!! As Steve says 60/70mm korts and props and a bowthruster!!
-
Hi all that picture of the MALTBY looks great Very nice job Brian O0

Chipchase Built his own Schottel drives for the Maltby and they work a treat giving not only a powerful thrust but also the ability to turn in its own length.
-
I'm still terrified of shottles on a Tug that will be used for towing, when they have plastic gearing.
Regards to the Eldergarth - What are "your" thoughts on me re-painting and doing her as the Rowan when she served the Tees and Tyne?
I think i'm quite likely to do this, just wondered what you all thought.
-
here is a picture of my eldergarth as she is now . and renamed "shannon "
