Title: Modified Bruma kit finished a last
Post by: peterpan on February 24, 2013, 04:59:06 pm
Hi.. I have been away from the forum for some time but 12 months ago ago I finished my first model a Bruma kit with Modified working sails and thought after all the help I got it was about time I tried to post some finished pics (If you want you can see how this started in 2010 by searching old posts “New boy with Bruma kit” and check out posts 1, 12 and 15 on the list) Have not had much luck with pics so will attach a couple here and if it works will send some more.

 Hi Roy
I tried to get the sails to hoist and furl as the real thing with the correct  block and tackle arrangement which they do...but only by hand with a lot careful handling. They are not controllable afloat so I have only motored with the sails furled. Also the kit hull design is not good for a lot of weight aloft so actually sailing the boat would need a lot of thought.....maybe one day.

Hi Peter, never the less a very nice looking model.  I personally thought that if the hull was just 6 inches longer it would have made an interesting sailing model, and I would have bought one for myself.

A sailing keel might make a difference.  If there is a weight problem, one way round it is to make a buoyant suitably streamlined keel and cancel out the additional buoyancy with a metal / lead weight at the bottom.
I will think it through a bit more if you fancy doing it.
kind regards Roy

Lovely woodwork sir!  :-))

I agree................there is nothing nicer than seeing natural varnished timber on a model, and for that a real boat/ship....and that woodwork really is beautiful.

Thanks rocyv it’s something I may come back too but will have to wait a bit.
Thanks all for nice comments...as it’s my first I am really pleased with it and am now completely hooked.
So much so that 6 month ago I  started a scratch build of an American “run about”  that I managed to get a set outlines of the hull shape for (see photo and progress photo) which has really shown me how much I have to learn and how many more tools I need!!!!!. In the beginning I was going to RC it but this is something else I know nothing about (apart from learning on the Bruma) so I have at the moment moved towards a display model with posh interiors.
BUT I recently saw an article on the SG&K gentleman’s run about by Clive Richardson (spindrift) and then found an extensive post on the forum and it is exactly what I was looking for when I started the current project. Beautiful wood finishes with low speed RC and a set of plans and pre cut frames so I have ordered the plans and wood pack and intend to complete this before returning to the “American boat” (am about to PM spindrift about his photos) All of which will hopefully expand my experience
I am beginning to feel like a proper modeller with 2 projects on the go. %%

Hi,Peter
Did you get my e/mail of yesterday the 1st of march.
If not, there must be a problem with your e/mail address.
Perhaps l could rewrite it on mayhem, or l could put a letter
in with the disc with the answers to your questions.
Please let me know what you think as soon as you can
before l post the disc.
Yours Clive.

 Hi Clive
Have only just gone on line....I have got your very helpful e mail and have sent reply...please send photos. :-)
As I say in my reply I am sure there will be many questions as the build progresses and I assume it is better to post these through the forum rather than direct I don't think the forum needs another comprehensive build on this boat but I do intend to start another thread when I get started perhaps covering some variations I have in mind.
Many thanks for you kind assistance....It’s only just over a week before my wife will be back with all the goodies.....can’t wait.
Thanks again :-))
