Hello
Is there any information about the real SS Talacre available? I mean the coaster who was prototype for the Caldercraft kit. Any pics or plans are very welcome!
Thanks!
Cheers, Kaspar

Hi kaspar.
The SS Talacre is a typical single hatch coaster used in the coal trade of a type that was found by the hundreds around the coast of the U.K. in the golden era of steam. Designed for Point of Ayr Collieries by Crichton, Thompson & Co Ltd., of London she was built by Crabtree &Co., of Great Yarmouth in 1917. Talacre was named after a small village near the colliery. Talacre was finally scraped in 1959 by the Hammond Lane Foundry in Dublin.

Frank, I think that Kyle Rae was in fact originally called the "Todd Head", where as Talacre was originally called "Doris Thomas".....two different ships.

Sorry to correct you, but "Doris Thomas" was renamed "Ben Ain", which which you might know from the Mountfleet Models kit.
-
quite correct, on reflection but still think that Kyle and Talacre weren't the same ships...........sadly I have sold my Coasters and short sea traders by Thomas, so can't verify it...............but again, stand to be corrected.
-
I agree, according to the picture of Kyle at myhobbystore, it's not the same as Talacre!
-
I have only just noticed this thread but thought you would like to know that the "Talacre" only ever carried that name all her life from 1917 to 1959.

Hi Bob,
Yes, this is the photo I have built mine to represent. It was the only one I could find on the whole Web.
The Caldercraft version does have the bridge house incorrectly positioned which looked odd, so I've tried to reproduce the above photo as best I could, considering it was lacking in the finer details.
Cheers

The plans of Talacre are shown on Page 92 of The Steam Collier Fleets by C V Waine. Originally the bridge was open, but by the 1930s, a wheelhouse had been added with a flying bridge on top of it. The original and modified designs are both shown on the same page.

Thanks Positive for image link.

Hello Positive any chance of a scan of the bridge drawings?
I have just bought a Talacre needing a lot of TLC and would like to correct the bridge structure. I have printed off the previous photos of changes but a plan is nice to have.
