Having never used a building board or even owned on i thought it was about time i got one and started building propper boats, not that my springers and barges arn't propper boats , it's just that they are box builds.
So what do you use , a commercialy available one , or something you have built yourself. Is there a set spacing for ribs and attaching them to the board.
So come on lads and lasses piont us in the right direction.

You need to go to your nearest recycling centre. An older 40s to 60s wardrobe made from block board door. This will be the most stable, better than solid timber or chipboard. you can shorten it or build a boat up to 6 feet long. Who knows you may get some useful ply from it as well.

All you need is a flat board, that will saty flat. I use 20mm MDF, Rib spacing depends on the size of boat and the curvature of the hull (stem to stern). Ribs are attached to blocks screwed to the board. Usually the ribs are cut to give a tongue which ensures that they all sit at the correct height above the board and that you are not planking up/down to the board.
Hope this makes sense.

good evening I made my building board out of piece of kitchen worktop its a bit thick ,i found this helped .I used it upside down, good to mark out on because it is paper backed and stuck some rubber strips on the pattern side to stop it sliding about .Its is a bit weighty this helps keep my model still on the bench.I use it to build Billings Fairmount Alpine

I think it is possible to get hung up about building boards. It is easy to forget that we are working with wood, and not precission engineering and working in thou. Any flat, stable board will work.
Making sure that you set up the the frames square and true, is just as important as having a flat stable base.

No way Howard , i have seen it under construction at Pete's , and it is looking well ok2 .
Cheers guys , i have been offered either a 2x4 (i build big boats) :-)) sheet of MDF 18mm , or a length of worktop .
And going by the replies i am on the right track , i just need to get some PSE 2x1 which should do for the rib spacers,
as these are true square they will be vertical .Good idea about the tounge to stand the hull off the board.
I will get some pics up once i have got the material sorted and assembled.
