I'm in Sydney visiting our middle son and his family, and I saw in the Port of Sydney Shipping list that QM2 was in town today. She is making a couple of visits this time as part of her 2013 World Cruise so, as it's an absolutely stunning day, I decided to go in to have a look at her. She was here on our last visit to Sydney but was berthed at the Garden Island naval facility, and I could not get very near to her. This time, however, she is in the Overseas Passenger Terminal, which meant I was able to get almost within touching distance of her. She is a massive vessel, a fact that is brought home when one gets really close to her, and anyone who has ever travelled on her will confirm.
Needless to say I took numerous photos, several of which appear below.

We saw her in Hobart on her one and only visit on her world tour a real looking cruise ship not like the new floating block of flats good pics Peter thanks for sharing tassie48

Peter....very interesting ...I have never seen the under water pylon bollards used.....[where her Port FWD spring ropes are attached under water].....Derek

She is due in Melbourne on the 21st March on her way to South Africa via Mauritius.
Not sure where she will berth in Port Louis as there is no berth large enough for her unless they have built one since we were there. Probably in the harbour and have small boats to take the passengers ashore.

I hadn't even noticed that until you pointed it out, Derek :embarrassed: I have to say I've never seen it before either. Perhaps it's because she's so long, she overhangs the wharf by quite a lot.

Brian we moored off shore a number of times when we did our QE2 cruise, and were ferried ashore in the ship's boats. The ports concerned were Vung Tau (Vietnam), Lahaina, Maui (Hawaii) and Acapulco in Mexico. It's quite interesting re-boarding the ship if the water is choppy, as it was at Lahaina, although the crew were excellent. Below is a shot of the boarding platform on QE2.

Thanks for the photos Peter, she really is a beautiful ship, I would love to take a cruise on her. However the only way that will ever happen is if I win the lottery. LOL. Mick B.

The head ropes are attached to the underwater bollards
The fore springs are taken back to the knuckle on the jetty

Hi Irish... Friend of mine was on the ship in January for 3 weeks and it worked out at about £100.00 per day. There are not many extras except for the day tours off ship.
Last minute booking seems to be the thing.

Thanks Netleyned........I was not aware of the differentiation between ...."head ropes & fore springs" %) on modern liners :o
The simple term of spring indicates variable tension through hydro mechanical or DC tension winches.......................
From the images below.....each set of ropes appear to be in similar tension.......
For liners & noise reduction I assume these would be DC MG [motor generator] sets ........Derek

Derek the difference between a bow and a stern mooring line and the springs - the springs are taken from
the bow to a bollard somewhere near midships and the stern spring is taken forward to a point somewhere near
midships (on a smaller ship or yacht the springs cross each other ) the mooring ropes are usually taken to the
nearest point - ie bow line straight onto the jetty at the bow. The point of the springs is to reduce and forward and backward
movement of the ship along the jetty whereas the bow and stern lines keep the ship close to the jetty.

I think that snap was taken from the City Circle rail underground platform where it emerges to daylight :-)) at the Circular Key station
It is clearly too low from being taken on the Carl Expressway >>:-(
QM2 also appears with a bunker lighter on her STDB side........Derek

I agree, Derek, it does appear to taken from the Quay station. I didn't think there was pedestrian access to the Cahill Expressway, but I may be wrong. I've driven over it a few times but can't remember if there's a footpath. When I went in to see the QM2, I travelled to the city by electric train. The QM2's funnel was quite a bit higher than the train while we were on the Harbour Bridge. I changed trains at Wynyard and caught the Circle Line to Circular Quay.

Sorry for my miss-spell of this Cahill ..... <*< however 25 years ago......the Sydney Rail System printed tickets with Circular Key station {-) ....Derek

Hi, I was always an avid reader and it was not until an embarrassing incident in class at school when I was about 11 /12 that I found out that Quay was not pronounced kway!
So I have sympathy with the miss-spelling.

She's not too bad looking for a modern block of flats, apart from those two stub masts/funnel/exhaust things on the back end whatever they are??

I believe those are the exhausts for the QM2's two GE jet engines, which are mounted on top of the superstructure. They are used as power generators for the ship. I also read where QM2 produces enough electricity to power the whole of Southampton, although she is no longer registered in Southampton, but Hamilton, Bermuda :((
