Just out of the blue every time I hit full stop when typing I get 3 or 4 stops instead of one, needless to say it is very annoying. My operating system is windows XP. Any replies or a fix please keep it simple, I am a complete dummy with a computer, Mick B....

I had a similar problem to yours recently - the key had been returning to normal position after being pressed but was only releasing slowly due to being a bit gunged up. Removed the key, cleaned with soft lint free rag, replaced and works fine now.
Otherwise, could be you're pressing the key down too hard or holding it down momentarily without realising it.

Sounds like it could be a sticky key. Do you get the same problem with the > key (ie shifted full stop) and do you have a number pad witha full stop? If so does that exhibit the same symptom?

press key once release key = 1 full stop
press key and hold key down = lots of full stop
remove finger from the full stop key a bit quicker O0 O0 O0 O0 {-) %% %% %%

the key repeat rate is under 'keyboard' in control panel, you can set it so the delay is longer before it repeats the keypress...

If it was a problem related to the key repeat rate, it would affect all of the keys. Tweaking the repeat rate might relieve the symptom, but will leave the problem to reappear later.
If it was a keyboard electronics problem, I would expect it to affect several keys on the same row or column in the keyboards matrix.
I would suspect the key itself, the physical button might well be returning to where it should be, but the thing that joins the two contacts together on the keyboard PCB might not be releasing quickly enough. If the dimpled rubber membrane for the full stop has gone a bit wonky, it is one of those "not consumer serviceable" parts, and can only be mended with a new keyboard. Fortunately, these are relatively cheap these days, and a USB one can work a laptop just as well as a "proper" PC.

Quick question. before buying a new keyboard etc
When does this happen? is it on certain websites (ie replying on MBM etc) or is it all the time (using word or notepad etc)
I sometimes get lag when typing a reply on MBM and some other forums. but it works most of the time.
Before condemning the keyboard turn it upside down and give it a jolly good shake.... you'll be amazed at the crud that builds up under the keys :o

strangely enough I have just ordered a new keyboard for my laptop, I generally use a mini usb keyboard and yesterday, just after reading this post, the numbers 1-4 and 7-0 stopped working, did some checks and even tried it on another machine but the keyboard is toast, completely dissasembled it and reassembled - now as well as the numbers all the letters on the left side have stopped working.

Trouble is, the printed "tracks" on todays keyboards are using less resilient inks (cheaper???) and any type of liquid seems to be able to wash it off. Usage also causes flaking, not necessarily on the key that is affected. Can you plug the keyboard into another computer or in the case of a Lappy, plug a desktop keyboard into it?

Thank you Ian, problem fixed, you guys are such a helpful bunch. Ian, what does it feel like to be a computer expert ?. I did not know that it was possible to do that, I also changed the cursor flash rate, handy to have a faster flash when making corrections to your posts. I generally just leave things in the computer alone & have very few problems, for me that's the best way. It has run now for over 2 years since it was last serviced.Mick B.
