Title: SY Medea
Post by: Gilles44 on March 30, 2013, 10:13:07 am
Hello,

I realise that I didn't make any post about my new project... which is almost completed. I've mentionned it in an other post about the engine: http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,34498.msg342053.html#msg342053 (http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,34498.msg342053.html#msg342053).

The challenge was to make that Dean's marine kit a steam version. I made most of the plastic parts in wood, the engine was the smallest I could find, Andreas by Hielscher. I've tested the engine with an external boiler and it can run with less than 1 bar, probably 0,5 bar, but the 2nd shaft with a 1:11 ratio doesn't turn fast enough for my 40 mm properler, so I removed it and will use the 1:3.3 ratio shaft.

I tried to made most of  details as close as possible to the real one, so I work a lot with the pictures I made during my visit of the real Medea in San Diego Maritime museum.

After all infrastructure were in place,  I could evaluate the remaining weight for the boiler and the gas tank, now I might need to add weight on the stern.

Here are some pictures from the beginning:

Looks great Giles, cant wait to see it on the water. You have made much better progress than I have. Mine has been on the water for testing and it performs extremely well. I could have got away with the 8mm version of the SVS engine, the 10mm engine produces more power than is needed for this hull. I have not done anything about deck or superstructure yet, still debating whether do do it as Medea or just as an open Windermere launch. Cheers, Ian.

Can I ask how you find the kit? The Medea has caught my eye, but I've heard varying reports about the quality of the Deans kits. I don't mind remaking some parts as you have done.

Thanks

Hi,

I've remake some parts for two reasons, to avoid the plastic parts to melt at the first boiler warm-up, and to make the model as close as possible to the original boat. The kit itself: parts are well ordered in the box, indications on plan are good, parts are in plastic and I'm not sure it's easier to assembly than thin wood. Model is not exact compare to the original one. I have not used any other Dean's kits so I'm unable to compare.

Hi Colin,

I was going to email you about it. Is the funnel looking that larger? I took the kit dimensions as a reference, I'm surprised.

It only looks a small amount bigger in your photos - it's fine.
You have done a great job in getting steam power into such a small model.

I would love to build one but the postage to Australia is more than the cost of the kit!  <:( <:( <:(

 Hi Ian,

 Same here.

It's good to see an old Clyde built steamer still in action ( full size ) built at Stephens yard in Govan, owing to a rich man in the U.S. a beautiful old boat from the past and so glad to see that somebody is willing to keep her going.

Excellent article about her on Wikipedia

Lovely build and looks great on the water.  As a point of interest in your research did you come across any photographs of her in armed wartime service?  I have found lots of detail on what her armament was but nothing on where it was placed and her wartime colours.

Hi,

The only interesting  picture I found is the one during WW1 when she served for the french navy as a gunboat; based in Cherbourg she was renamed "Corneille"; for some time I wanted to make it the same by adding a 75mm gun (see pictures below) and a few more details seen on the picture, but as it was a very short period of her life, not very representative. So I prefered to make it a peacefull boat, with her sails like on the below paint:

Dear all,

I'm adding a new link for the previous video and a another link for the last video of my Medea with new smaller boiler holding 1 bar and boat speed was quite steady even while changing direction. I wish you can see the difference of behavior between both videos, as well as I did.
Speed suits to the size of that model I believe.

Very impressive performance Gilles, you have made an excellent job of the model and managing to squeeze a steam plant inas well is something quite special.

Hello Derek, and thank you for following my work.

:-) ...hum the steam whistle...yeah it sounds good on the video...but...
...there is simply no whistle on my Medea, I've added the sound on the video  %) I found it nice, I didn't want to cheat, believe me ! Sorry if I desappoint you.

Giles......we know that the true scale sized steam engine whistle sounds like a high pitch Piccolo  {-)......

I find the 5" Gauge steam train engine builders use a little deception ... many have a totally out of scale, large diameter steam whistle hidden underneath  :o the engine ...this allows them to blast their engines whistle at lower realistic frequencies

So I have ordered a 13 diameter x 75 long whistle trunk and valve from Microcosm with the plan to trial the whistle hidden from actual view

That’s the whistle I’ve got. Looks the part, relatively small compared to some of the “organ pipe/ tin whistles “ around. It’s tuneable too. The dome nut on top is the locknut the tube can be raised or lowered to a pitch of your choice. I found it needed to be as close to the boiler as possible to avoid a wet spluttering start. I think mine was from Research Products.
I’m back home on the boat with the dog. Mary is improving daily but still one more stent to put in.
Rgds
Jerry.
