Title: MY AMSTERDAM BUILD LOG
Post by: old shrimper on April 30, 2013, 07:55:33 am
HI
Guys / Girls
I Have just started on my amsterdam build , in the process of fitting the steering nozzle 85mm OD diameter  from the prop shop ,and waiting for the kort prop to be made

so i thought i'd start on the superstructure as i don't want to glue all the decks in place in case i have to go back and change some thing with shaft line

i must say i'm very impressed with how easy and well  all the laser cut parts fit together  ( unlike the dumas die cut parts in the tuna clipper kit )
i'm about halfway through the superstructure  and im wondering how you guys that have built the amsterdam before did the glazing of the windows ?
i can see i won't be able to get inside some of the cabins (3 levels ) to stick the tinted plastic card on from the inside ,
if i paint it in levels and put the glazing in as i go , is one way but i won't be able to repaint the whole thing without getting over spray on the windows unless i tape them up then i will have a tape line round them

what do you guys do in these cases

thanks Bob

have deleted all the kit aputure timber at the top  to get the nozzle in and shifted the shaft and log back 45mm to reach the pivot point of the nozzle

raised the shaft line 4mm so the nozzle does not hang down under the keel and clears the hull by 1.5 mm

I always put the glazing in last, if I can still get my fingers in.   %)

Hi,
I added glazing only to the windows in the 3rd level and spray painted before adding the glazing and the top deck. All the other openings are without glazing because of the sound module (speaker) underneath the super structure. The glazing would have muffled the sound to much.
Regards
Wilhelm
Good luck with your build.

Looking good, Bob. The kit seems to have changed somewhat since I built mine, more than 10 years ago. The wood in mine was die cut, not laser, the anchors are recessed whereas mine just go through a hole in the hull, and there appears to be a raised moulding at the top edge of the hull. There may well be other differences which I have not noticed. Hopefully some of the fittings are better now, especially the stanchions which in mine are white metal that break if you look hard at them. That said, I enjoyed building the kit, and still enjoy sailing her.

Peter.

thank for the encouragement guys
i recessed the anchors my self by choice as i thought they looked very unrealistic just stuck through the hull

the laser cut wood is a very good quality cut and fit, just break out and fit virtually
there is a raised molding all the way round at the deck line

the buffers are just there to protect it when bashing round the pool  i thought about leaving them there ,but not sure whether they look a bit big
what do you think ? it just foam filler rubber from under the eaves on a corrugated tin roof

not going to do all the stanchion stuff just the little brass handrails, as im not sticking to the plane just using the kit as a base  and changing stuff as i go ( i hate doing hand rails )
i would by some ready made , if i could find the right configuration /size
i might bring the front bulwark back farther towards the break in foredeck to , give it a more modern look ill see what it looks like if i can find some 2 mm sheet
waiting for my NEW /replacement ESC to arrive so i can do the wiring harness and close up the decks

cheers Bob

Most of us have to make do with a bathtub or if we're really decadent a kids swimming paddling pool

har har yer well now the kids have left home its about all it gets used for
we were going to fill it in and put a gazebo in its place but  the cost was over the top , a few year ago we turned it into a fish pond for a year or so  , you still had to run the pumps etc
so wasn't any cheaper to maintain
never by a house again with a pool

Very nice test tank old shrimper  O0 .....but just two things

1. don't you feel sorry for the magpies & sparrows that are attracted to the GREEN plastic grass looking for seeds?
2. don't you feel sorry for the neighbours going past if you are skinny dipping in daylight hours?  {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) {-)

Looking good, Bob :-))  I notice the typical Amsterdam turning in reverse, mine does that too, although I thought that the Kort nozzle might stop it, or were you doing it deliberately?

That's a nice bit of water - where is it?

hi Peter

i was on full lock in rev
to just show how well it steers in rev  with the steering nozzle you can do figger 8 s  no worries
it does steer a bit better one way then the other even though the nozzel turns the same to port and starboard
it has got a tendency to prop walk in reverse if you pull up quick BUT SO do the real ones
very happy with it now on 7.4 v at 50% throttle  on 12v it was just crazey fast you could only use 20% throttle or the bow wave comes over the front

the water hole (small river turns into a big river in the wet the water is over the sugar cane railway bridge at times )  is called ROSS & LOCKE just south of Cairns were you turn off  to go up the GILLIES range to the the Tableland

cheers Bob
