I 'signed up' for Twitter a while back, then found out it was just for getting reams of short text messages from famous people and business ads.  You have to 'follow' someone or something, so not exactly a two way conversation.

I have also lost interest in Facebook as it became swamped by online game scores and promotional ads.

For an online experience of real interest and content you can't beat Mayhem !

Martin,
You dont need a Idiots guild to Twitter you just Join the twitters and become a Idiot,
Which with a site like this you could never be so don't even think about it.
                       Regards Howard.

To WHOM, for goodness' sakes? Surely not the Twitterati? Do we need Steven Fry or Jonathan Agnew to pitch up? Will Lady Gaga do us a turn with her tranny under the roof of Mrs Mayhem's gazebo? Are we to be renamed Madonna's Modelboat Mayhem after her well-rehearsed Dancing-on-Water routine with five steaming Springers?  God Forbid - even the Prime Minister is one of Them!!
My Mum used to say "Leave it alone and it will get better; carry on picking at it and it will only get worse."
LEAVE IT ALONE, Martin!!

DM got there first but - do you really want the kind of people who are attracted by twitter?  Can't say that I would admit to recognizing any of the names that he seems familiar with, but I assume that they are some kind of passing "celebrity"?

My sister has both Facebook and Twitter... She has lost all art of conversation... Just sits on the sofa on her phone, facebooking someone she hasn't seen in ages (or last night), and it even managed to break her friendships with one of her best friends...  {:-{

I would not reccomend at ALL!  O0

Great idea Martin :-))

Most forums use Twitter for reasons such as this to publicise events, and also if there's a problem with the forum it's easy to get information out to the members.

Maybe a bit late for Mayhem, but is emailing boat-clubs, models shops and associated websites now considered 'old-fashioned' or no longer viable?

Certainly not, but I see no reason not to use social media as a messaging tool, along with email and any other means of communication.

I prefer "Accept progress and go forward or stand still and get left behind"
But its also a good idea to know the difference between progress and change.
There is a saying that if you do not pay for a product, you are the product.  What do Twitter and their like get out of it?

In answer to Martin's original question -

http://edudemic.com/2013/02/a-visual-guide-to-twitter-for-beginners/

http://mashable.com/guidebook/twitter/

Many more via google

I keep my account protected so only those that I choose can see my tweets ( is there a bird in here?) , necessary in order to stay in contact with my teenage daughters as I won't use FaceBook.   >>:-(

A little too late to correct Mum, I think.
Anyway, the actual subject of her remark was a scab over a nasty knee wound - I simply quoted her as it seemed appropriate also in these circumstances.
Ref Twitter, suit yourself. I really couldn't care less.

I can't lay claim to having made this up but it sumarises the whole social media scene for me, "IN THE NOT TOO DISTANT FUTURE, YouTube,Twitter & FaceBook will merge to form one giant, idiotic, super-sized time wasting, non-productive, time-stealing, mind-dumbing, do-not-need-to-know website called YouTwitFace. I would have thought it impossible to insult
any of the leading conservadroids or demo cretins
as they don't take any notice of the wishes of the
voters. They just carry on as they like.
