Hi All, I was given a lovely tramp steamer type ship on the weekend, any idea which ship it is please - It appears to have been built from a kit - Don't suppose someone has the plans or instruction from it do they please.
Was originally fitted out with a steam engine but that is no longer in the ship- I cannot afford a steam unit so it will be going electric, hopefully with smoke unit and maybe a water pump to utilise the outlets in the hull
Also got an almost built 1/200 USS Arizona BB-39 has been built as a static model so won't be getting any RC fitted
Regards
Wayne

I would think that is almost certainly the old 'American Scout' freighter kit from Sterling with a somewhat unusual colour scheme.

Cool thanks, I would agree re the American Scout - Now to I repaint or use her as she is, mmm I think I will run as is for now, just want to get the boat on the water!! Something slow to compliment my speedy Perkasa!!

I rather like the colours I would keep it as it is,Ray. :-)) :-))

Yep I think that is easiest - A fellow club member this end may have an electric motor and speed controller for me, so now to dig out a servo and figure out where to place it, I cannot figure out where the servo originally was

I would leave the colours as they are. It looks to be a nice job
As for the servo mounting, you might find that the previous owner had made a tray for all the gubbins (Engine, boiler, radio gear etc) that has been removed.
Can you post a pic up of the insides?
-
I will get a better pic tonight of the insides, there is a little block just near the stern but not something a normal servo could attach too -
Forgot to mention the boat is 51" long with 7" beam

It was a standard design (they built loads of them and the plans are available from the Smithsonian, USA. Forget the exact number of the design, but I built this one, the Santa Catalina, from them. The plans were of the White Squall!

Thanks Bob, a chap in America is sending me a copy of the plans and instructions from the original kit which I hope will help ID what is missing - I am hoping to sail her tomorrow.

Hi wayne.
googled sterling american scout loads of stuff on it even threw up pics of the model you had been given. Seems you had been to RC groups forum with your query....
Frank . :P

Thanks Frank, Yes I have been on RC Forums where a kind chap in America is sending plans to me - Its a real nice ship and hopefully with a bit of luck I can sort out the missing bits and get her 'ship shape' again - I won't repaint for now, rather use the ship for the summer.

Well the ship had a quick sail today, needed a bit more ballast up front, which is sorted now that I have my 12v battery. Speed seems OK but I may try gear up the motor a little.

Hi All, I am after some guidance here please. to test my American Scout I had to add an additional shaft to connect the existing shaft and the motor - This is obviously not a satisfactory idea, and I am after suggestions on how to solve it please - I tried moving the motor closer to the existing shaft but then the motor shaft is higher than the prop shaft -
Thanks Wayne

Hi Wayne.
if it works leave it be. Its been done B4 its called shaft extension did the same for a sub used brass rod between two couplers worked fine. Another way of shaft extension is called double couplers but but I think the distance is too wide in your case.
Having had a steam engine installed the shaft has to be horizontal as opposed to electric motor fit where shaft can be angled.
may be try a geared motor where the geared end shaft is off set and lower ??
Frank.

Thanks Frank, I will look at using some brass bar instead of the shaft and stuffing tube I have used now. Or I will try secure the stuffing tube to a wooden support or two so it does not spin with the shaft.
I don't suppose I could get gears anywhere to fit the motor currently in the boat? I cannot afford a new motor with gears at present

Hi wayne.

click on the item name will show a pix of it.
They also list timing pulleys and belts maybe possible to get a pulley on end of shaft and motor cant find a photo of the actual set up but something like this

Hi All - Does anyone perhaps have any plans or a parts list for the SS American Scout please - I believe this was made by Sterling - I would like to work out what is missing from my boat so that I can restore her - I was going to be sent some plans from the US but nothing came of it.
Many thanks Wayne

Hello Wayne - It's your lucky day! When I opened up the thread I thought 'That's like my American Scout' which I have just completed. I then looked at the dates of the posts, and scrolled down to find yours. I purchased a complete but unmade kit from Ebay about 18 months ago and copied the plans so I had one to draw on.
Send me a PM with your Email Address and in the mean time I will look out what I have spare, or I can get them copied locally.
John
