Title: DEEP SEA DIORAMA...IN A BOX.
Post by: eddiesolo on June 17, 2013, 04:37:37 pm
Here is my next...on a budget...diorama. Theme this time is sunken, but not a wreck...it be a deep sea diver and diving bell in a box with a sliding Perspex cover.

So, box done, and sprayed with various blues to give impression of light changes. Diving bell scratch built and sprayed white, once dry it will be have slight rust washes, but only slight-this will sit against the back wall of the box and to the right corner. The base will be textured and hard sprayed sponge will be added near the front and sides-these will be sponged painted. The last piece of this diorama is the deep sea diver. He is a GI Joe one I got cheap, and will be painted before installation on the front left side bottom, this will hopefully, give a slight perspective look...I hope. Last thing will be a piece of clear Perspex to slide from the top to protect and it can then be showed.

Some early piccies.

Cheers Ned, sprayed the sponge and just fitted it to the sides of the box. Next is the sand coat.

Some piccies of the diving bell in situ and the coral/rock formations and the sand base. Sand base and the coral needs painting and then it is finished until I get hold of my deep sea diver.

The idea is that the diver is just a few meters away from the diving bell and is coming towards us.

I think the boz is an excellent idea.  :-)) Your previous submarine model would also look great in a box. :-))
Have you thought about tinted perspex for the cover? It could add that underwater tint to the diorama.

Eddie,
To me they look so much better in a box, almost taking it to another level.

Looking good!
You really should exhibit some of your dioramas. Plenty of shows on this summer, and probably not too far from you.

Good idea regarding the coloured/tinted perspex, they do a very light blue one that may work, proplem is that they seem only to do it in large sheets.

Thank you sir, origianlly it was to be a wreck with a couple of divers around it, but on a budget, I thought a cheaper option if it didn't work  :-)

Actually this is for Neil

Ever thought of putting one of your smaller old lifeboats onto a carriage instead of a stand?
Maybe then onto a plinthe with backdrop ... Sort of a diorama .... ish

Lunch is over now so it's back to my first aid refresher course.

Just remembered my mum in law has a big greenish tinted glass jar/bowl that houses some plants. Something like that would be really great for a 360• diorama.
Gotta go >>>>>

That was one of the things I was thinking of.  They were called bottle gardens and very popular about 20 years ago

95% finished. Diver re-painted just got air hose from diver to attach, Perspex cover and a plaque on top of the box. He will now sit on the shelf and dry before I do anything else.

Top class work there Si
Love the diver.
Has he got a red woolly hat? All hard hat divers wore them.

Diorama in a box 99% finished, plaque in place, cabling from diver attached and a rather crusty anchor and chain added for effect. Just need the Perspex cover and then that will be it.
