Title: Phantom from Billing Boats
Post by: tica on July 23, 2013, 06:01:24 pm
Hi there

Just bought a Billings Phantom kit that had been started for approx 60£

It will get a brushless Graupner compact 260 VA 1420KV with a 18A ESC and a 3S Lipo.

As it came

Started on it the July 9Th.

I'm using a PU adhesive and I know it will take some cleaning afterwards.

First plank

Last plank on, next it will be cleaning and sanding

Hi Tica,

Your build is coming along nicely!

I assume you motorisation is going to be similar to the Phantom of Jorgen?

The reason I ask is; 1420 x 11,1V =14000 rpm under load, which is too much for a submerged prop.
I'd go for a lower Kv motor if I were you, 10.000 rpm is about the maximum before cavitation will occur.

On 3S that would be a motor with about 1000Kv, something like this for example:
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__12921__D2830_11_1000kv_Brushless_Motor.html (http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__12921__D2830_11_1000kv_Brushless_Motor.html)

With 10.000 rpm the boat will still be blistering fast, and when running partial throttle, the motor (and ESC won't heat up so fast, something Jorgen has some issues with).

If you want to avoid overheating the outrunner, a watercooled motormount is the way to go.

If you have doubts, 10.000rpm won't be fast enough, check out my MAS:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-igDcvLySEM&feature=youtu.be (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-igDcvLySEM&feature=youtu.be)
(turn up the volume really high)

Regards, Jan.

Hi Jan

I'm not quit sure what setup Jorgen is using right now.

I'm used almost the same setup in my wife's Classic, and it goes like h... with 3s. and a Hydroprop from graupner with no heat problems, video is with 2s.

But I'm always open for input and the next few days (week) will be in the varnish corner, so I will look into other solutions :-)

Hi Carsten,

If you feel that combo on 2S isn't quick enough, by all means try 3S, it will be silly fast...

I'm looking forward to the video.

Gents, just to say thanks for the information in this thread. My winter project is to build a semi scale MTB.

I was wondering about a motor, battery, prop combination to power it and the information in this thread has made my job a lot easier, thanks.

@Jan

If the water is flat next Sunday I will try to get some video with 3S, I have tried and once before and it almost took off due to the waves.
I will also try with a lighter 2S battery, the one we uses now is approx. 450grams.
But it's my wife's and she is still afraid to do more than ½ gas on 2S.

Regarding the build of Phantom, the next days will be sanding, sanding sanding so no updates until I get to the varnish part.

Power wise I think that I will go for a 1100KV outrunner with watercooled mount as used in this Diva http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHZgXuln4Fc (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHZgXuln4Fc)

Batteries, 1100KV BL motor and water cooled ESC has arrived and waiting for the water cooled motor mount.

Due to a knee problem and some strong pills  %% nothing has been done on the build  >>:-(

Build is on track again after a week of audit in CH.

Water cooled mount and programming card for the BL motor.

The bottom has been plastered and sanded.

The sides has also been sanded, still not there but the arm said stop ;-)

Looking good!

I also like your solution of cooling the base of the outrunner with what's commercially available.

Cooling solution is from Hobbyking http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=12201 (http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=12201)
But only avalible from international warehouse but 2 pcs could be keept below the non Tax amount for Denmark.

I know, I recognized it as the same cooler used in the boats from Dragon (ARPRO a.O.), of which I have two lying around here.

Slow progress but getting there  ok2

I choose to apply a sheet of ricepaper and resin on the bottom.

Rudder and shaft are in and aligned.

And a close-up of the prop 35mm 3 blade for now

Hi Tica,

The outholder for the rear bearing, in front of the prop, has a lot of drag in it's present shape.
See if you can streamline it a bit more (forward) to reduce the drag.

Also, the angle of the propshaft looks rather steep in the pictures, but this could be due to the camera position...

Hi Jan

Outside hull is not yet finished so I will address the P-Station before paint.

The angel of the propshaft is identical with Jorgen's so I guess that it will work, I uses another type of prop than he do.

This weekend I'll attend a Hobby exhibition in Copenhagen so no work on the boat but some good time with friends.

Next week is vacation time so hope to do some work on the model.

Deck sanded down and started to lay down the mahogany deck.

A bit more progress.

The instructions showed that I should use a thin strip of mahogany between the strips but I opted for a thin strip of 0,25mm black styrene. IMO it looks much better.

Got it tested today and it just need a bit more power so I'll replace the motor with either a 1300KV for 3S or a 1800KV for 2S.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bxw_wV4aLzs

But first I have to redo the finish on the hull as for some strange reason water has penetrated the lacquer and the wood is damaged  >>:-( I have used the same type of lacquer and done it the same way as my wife's Classic and there are no problems with that one. I'm puzzeled  %%

tica......looks must be deceptive as the boat certainly appears fast in the video.....

The back raked hull planking looks beautiful O0........in images for posts #2 and #17, it appears that you have used a white PVA glue for the hull....so where is the water damage?.......if it is on/in the deck planking?.....

On November 9th you mention "thin strip of mahogany between the strips but I opted for a thin strip of 0,25mm black styrene" .....so what type of glue did you use here?..... finally what type of lacquer was used?

Keep us posted with the repair images :-))..... Derek

I haven't stripe i back yet, but it appears to penetrate at the bottom line under the whit paint, at least it is at the sharp edge that the mahogany has come loos / swollen up.

For the decking mahogany / black styrene I used 2K 5min epoxy.

The Lacquer is from Junkers and called "Skibslak" and have worked perfectly with my wife's Aeronaut Classic.

It may take some time before I start the repairs as I'm having some painful back problems and has just called in for sick-leave  {:-{

Carsten

Carsten..

I am still not sure if you mean the interface between the back raked hull planking and the white waterline below this, or the deck planking to the white borderline .......certainly either will be a task to rectify

We do not have  "Skibslak" in Australia, however from google it appears to be a quality polyurethane in single or twin pack application material

Hope your back is better & keep us posted with the repairs...............Derek

It's at the waterline that the water has penetrated and then it has travelled op along the edges of the diagonal mahogany planking making the to raise.

Junker Skibslak (Ship lacquer) is a 1K Uretan-acrylic based lacquer with UV filter. I have also had good results with International Classic boat varnish but I can't get it in Denmark at the moment.

Inspection today has shown that it appear to be the white paint that for some reason is not "watertight" but I don't get it this also a paint type that I have used a lot without any issues  like this  >>:-(

I'll visit the hospital this afternoon and hope for some explanation to my problems.
