Title: Should I try to sand out these?

Hi I am building an Aero Naut Jenny. I have these vertical marks in the mahogany veneer that I assume are from the saw. Should I try to sand out these marks, or will they disappear in layers of varnish? The mahogany layer is extremely thin-less than 1mm I guess, so not much lee way to sand away. Advice would be much appreciated.

I believe the timber would not have been cut in a manner that left vertical marking.......nor would planning create such marking
Naturally you could sand a sample piece but I suspect the grain growth ring marking will maintain it's same appearance until the 1.0 mm is worn through  :o
Why not seal & varnish [& sand & varnish & sand & varnish  O0 ] a sample piece to check the result.... as you may have seen here on Mayhem builds..........varnish or polyurethane finishes can make a simple wooden skin into a work of beauty :-))

Hi, those markings are the natural grain of mahogany and will definitely run throughout the depth of the wood. As Derek said, you would be sanding right through the wood and still not remove them.   :-)

Mahogany is like that, there are growing brands.
If you do not want brands there is the plastic

I concur, that is natural grain pattern in the wood. Some timbers have distinct grains, other not.
The least grainy wood that is readily available in modelling size pieces is lime wood aka boxwood. I have seen if for sale in one of the big hobby superstores in UK. You can buy it online too, no doubt.

 :-)) Lightly run down with very fine paper and a few coats of varnish it will look really great,Ray :-)) :-)) :-))

Otherwise change to different cut/plain grain

Thanks for all the replies, I think a light sand and varnish, varnish, varnish will be order of the day. Anyone interested in following my trials and tribulations with this build, you can have a chuckle in sports boat section and 'Newbie aero naut jenny build' you will see my confusion when you see the nice grain on the final transom layer, that is a solid piece of mahogany tho' not laminate.
