Title: Correct method for applying sail numbers
Post by: Mwk on August 16, 2013, 09:56:10 pm
I am currently at the stage of completing my new sails and would like to know what is the correct method of applying the sail numbers. The material is cambric cotton and the yacht is 48", the yacht is also not any particular class so i cannot officially have it registered but I would like the yacht to appear as much to the real thing as possible. Also can you add GBR on the sail?

Thanks

Mike

Just come across your question re sail numbers etc. In terms of the application I'd initially be tempted to try a permanent marker on a piece of scrap cotton to see how much it 'bleeds'. If it's too much I wouldn't be inclined to go with the self adhesive lettering - the cotton will give or stretch while the self adhesive lettering won't. This leaves stitching. It's a horrible job but if done well will look superb.

Sail lettering etc? As it's a model you can pretty much put whatever you want on the sails with the notable exception being anything that is recognised as an 'accepted' class symbol/emblem. GBR lettering? No problems.

Alternative. If there is a 'T' shirt printing place in town, that does the heavy duty lettering, not just the iron on transfer. Or use the iron on transfers for 'T' shirt printing.

As it is cotton, you could then paint a white rectangle on the reverse. Or paint the white rectangle first. And then add the letters to the same painted side. This would should give you a better surface for stick on letters.

I think that there may be an issue with the print at home stuff. Fading.
