Title: BIG PROBLEMS!!! ( allergy to aerosol paints and grp resins )
Post by: Neil on August 26, 2013, 10:33:02 am
I have, at the advice of my doctor at 07.20 this morning after a visit to Blackpool Vic Hospital, been told that I have developed a bad allergy to aerosol paints and grp resins.....and as such, need to either avoid them like the plague or get myself a very good respirator system and not just the single filter one I use at the mo with kerknackered straps and ill fitting face piece..............

any ideas where I can get a space suit like they use for chemical attacks, or other very good full face mask like firemen use with their B.A. gear please.

have searched google but without success

cheers,

neil.

Sorry to hear the bad news Neil.  :((

However, if you are after an chemical suit used by the military I would not recommend an NBC suit, they are carbon lined and are extremely uncomfortable to wear after a while! I should know, I have to wear one once a year for my CCS training in the RAF- you get very hot very quickly!  >>:-(

+1

Worst part of military life many years ago, NBC exercises lasting days......

Sorry to hear about that, Neil.

One option might be to use a scuba diving face mask and bottle, they give a pretty good seal!! I reckon you might be able to pick them up second hand.

The plus side is, you will already have the gear if you decide to take up diving!

Do not take chances.
There will always be leaked
Do not use sprays
Use acrylic products (water) There are acrylic resins, acrylic adhesives, acrylic paints

And you have a good friend who can make two or three odds?

good luck

Neil,
In Australia, and NZ, profesional spray painters use a forced ventilation mask when they are spraying with 2-pac and other nasty paints.
This provides air from outside the booth through filters etc, and the inside of the mask is at a higher pressure than the outside atmosphere, Not much but enough, so that fumes cannot leak into the mask, as the positive pressure exits the mask to atmosphere.
They have to use these by law here.
Sure there must be something similar your end of the woods.
Usually worn with full disposable overalls with hoody. Mask covers most of the face, eyes, mouth and nose.
Maybe try for something similar
cheers

ps, maybe Stavros would be able to help

We use Arco gear at work, pretty pricey, but for respirators, try http://www.arco.co.uk/textsearch/Personal%20Protection/Respiratory%20Protection/Powered%20Respirators/?pcatid=-8834

and then checkout their chemical suit gear
http://www.arco.co.uk/textsearch/Clothing/Hazard%20Protection/Chemical%20Protection/?pcatid=-8707
which are basically just fancy raincoats.

Hi neil.
may be you need to get what Si has in his avatar.  {-) or possibly try doing some jobs out side still with the mask on instaid of in a fune and dust filled shed plenty of ventilation outdoors.

I have got perennial rhinitis and I do the smelly dusty jobs out side with the respirator on great ventilation for fumes down side is weather dependant.

Hi, I would go down the route of Vnkiwi, go to the local car paint factors, they may be able to help. After all the years of glass fibre work, I too am starting to feel the affects of the styrene fumes on my eyes when laminating. Nemesis

Neil I know when I had the yacht some of the repairers of grp used to get a bad reaction to
the resin but it was usually only either polyester or epoxy not usually both.  If you are allergic to both
avoid them like the plague, They had to change their jobs if that was the case.
As for paints - are water based acrylics any good and if so can you use them with an airbrush rather
than the propellant it the rattle cans (which can be an irritant to some people
Hope you get over it as you make so very fine models
