Evening all .....I'm going to need an ESC soon and I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with the cheaper Turnigy ones? :-)

They are cheaper for sure but they also sometimes make smoke when not needed. Mick B.

ive used loads, in helicopters, planes and boats, no problem at all, just remember chinese stated amps are usually overated, so get one that is capable of the job :-))

How do you do that Red or is there some magic way of measuring the amps before you spend your money. Generally when you buy cheap there is always someone that will make it to a lower price. China or Hong Kong is a long way to go to collect your warranty. You are lucky in U/K that you have local suppliers that make quality products & generally stand behind what they make & sell. Mick B.

usually double the rating is a starting factor.
If you need an ESC that can handle 25Qamps , choose a "Chinses" one of at least 50 CA (Chinese Amps! )

The workmanship on cheap ESC's is usually rubbish, the FET's rarely all make contact with the watercooling block. (35-40% is my average until now).
I take off the shrinkwrap and check this, if required I sand the FET's into one plane and add the cooler with a little bit of heatconducting paste.
Put on a new piece of shrinkwrap and you're good to go.

You don't give an indication of what type and rating of ESC you are looking for.
A few different makes are sold under the Turnigy label.
I have three Turnigy Marine 35A (http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__7377__Turnigy_Marine_35A_Brushless_Boat_ESC.html) brushless ESC's. I am running them at less than 20A and I have no complaints.
I have a three 20A Turnigy brushed ESC's which I used in plastic kit conversions. I ordered four, but one was u/s on arrival. Worked out at around £6 / working ESC. I run these ESC's at a few amps.

quite a few ways really, this for example is a very cheap way of measuring max amp spikes

Its just a known fact to always get a higher amp esc than you need, especially if you have no way of measuring what your system is actually drawing.
Sometimes buying expensive will not guarantee you are going to be fault free, I have a castle creations hydra 120a esc, cost a small fortune, and it went back for repair, that took ages, as they are located in USA.
Rooster might like to tell us what application he is wanting a esc for then it might be easier to recommend, :-))

If you have been around for awhile you might know about Chinese Amps but for someone new it is a trap they can easily fall into. We should never assume that someone new knows these kinds of pitfalls, it could turn out expensive when you are watching your boat go up in smoke. You are correct Red that expensive does not guarantee it will not fail but generally it turns the odds in your favour, At least in your case it was repairable. Mick B.

On any forum, its best to assume that the readership only knows you by your current post, so a quick statement of the project rarely comes amiss and will usually avoid the pitfall of replies being about the replyers area of interest.
Anyway, looking at the article, in the "electrical bits" section in the notes, an RE385 is being used run off a 4.8v pack through an Mtronics Marine 10, so a powerful ESC is not required.
The attractively priced units need very careful reading of the specification - quite apart from the oriental interpretation of amps, very often reverse might not be there.
The 8A ESC on here - http://www.mr-rcworld.co.uk/index.php?ukey=home - should do the job, even if it means using a brushed setup.

I use a lot of seaking and turnigy stuff and generally theyre ok, not as good as swordfish esc of course. Theyre not like the really cheap none branded esc's on ebay, theyre still quite expensive. If you buy them from Giantshark, performancemodels, astecmodelboats or hobbyking UK you wont have much problem in getting a replacement if they decide to go TU because they are based in the UK.

good advice Mike, I too also try and support the shops, then uk online such as giant shark, then overseas, I am currently in dispute with a chinese distributor who have sent an incomplete order, I doubt I will get anywhere, my fault, I saved a measly £5 and now its bitten me in the bum! :}

I have used Electronize escs in my boats and LPR escs in my cars. I also bought a Solid State esc from Microgyros .com (faultless) Never had any probs. Anyway the local model shop is just a phone call a way to sort things out if they go wrong. Yes I do buy on the net but not abroad at all. Looking at M troniks escs at the moment.
