Luckily no innocent bystander was hurt. This so called "Expert" got it wrong. Sadly it reflects on the whole hobby.

The press call a 700 size chopper a 'toy'.

You get a rotor that size going at or close to supersonic, it's deadly.

with all the electronics anyone can drive these vehicles

even idiots

inevitably there has damage

nasty stuff........am amazed that people treat them so lightly though....when you consider that those tips must be doing supersonic speeds and made of carbon fibre when running at  full speed......just unreal........and people think that they are toys............. more lethal than a b***** gun

Terrible accident a few comments from my self being a flyer of a hexcopter far from being an "expert" I am an avid flyer now Circlip at no time in any of the articles do`s the guy get called an "expert", Questions need to be asked just like in any other accident did he get it wrong? did something go wrong with the Craft was there radio interference, there are stringet saftey rules about flying and from the reports the group he was with were flying within the rules.
from the reports he seemed to be flying in the correct maner (for his style of flying) in a designated flying area away from members of the public he possibly made the mistake of becoming to complaisent in his flying maybe got distracted who knows until the police investigate the incident as to the incident reflecting on the whole hobbie I think I read recently that he is only the second person to be killed by his own machine as other posters have said on here the model is not a toy it is a leathal bit of kit in the wrong hands but nothing in the reports say he was doing anything other than flying if he had been breaking the rules of flying then I am sure one or more of the other flyers he was with would have had a word due to the very nature of what they were flying. I hope that they do find out what went wrong if it was a problem with his model as that could reflect on the saftey of other flyers with the same model.

I'm a fan of Alan Zeabo and what he can do with a model helicopter is mind bending, so I'm surprised more accidents like this aren't more common....

Roman was not just a 19 year old kid, he was an accomplished 3D pilot sponsored by Align Helis.   Sorry Mark, I had to go  onto another site for the quote, so the guy does seem to have more than a beginners knowledge? Not breaking any rules? I think personal safety is a good enough reason not to fly so close to oneself and I reiterate, luckily no innocent bystander was injured and although he was flying in an area "Designated for enthusiasts", it was still in a public park. Another throwaway quotation from the report, "It is believed to be only the second such incident of this type" Yea, OK that's alright then.    Not everything with a whirly bit in the front or top are dangerous and my own interest in aerodynamics of toy RC gliders have had at least two fatalities to members of the general public not involved with the operation, so stop making excuses for complacency.   Ultimately it doesn't matter what went wrong, HE can't be mended so a salutary lesson to be observed by ALL who play with ANY remotely operated WHATEVER.      Regards  Ian.

Congratulations Circlip

these machines are dangerous devices!
these devices should move behind fences
How many deaths will it take to make a regulation?

Martin I'm sorry, this guy is dangerous!
This year we will Gazouland prohibit such vehicles, helicopters, drones and other

Flying in a public park in itself is not an offence unless the park has a byelaw he was flying as you rightly state in an area  "Designated for enthusiasts", and as such would have been, should have been abiding by the rules of his club and the governing body of the sport, so he would not /should not have  been flying within 50 foot of bystanders or buildings as to his own personal saftey and his thoughts on the subject we will never know. And as to your comment  "Ultimately it doesn't matter what went wrong," I think it do`s matter, if he made a mistake then he has paid the ultimate price but if something went wrong with the model for whatever reason lessons could be learned, to prevent a similar incident reacurring, I was not  making excuses for complacency, I said he might have become "complacent in his flying", which we all know can lead to accidents.

A helicopter, be it a model or a full size one, is an inherently unstable and dangerous craft by it's very design. One hundred per cent concentration at all times is needed to fly one, it only takes a millisecond's loss of concentration and you are in big trouble. I know, I've done it... I managed to fly my Chinook backwards into my 'man area' and believe me, that hurt, even though I was wearing jeans. A set of rotor blades striking bare skin is going to hurt more, and if they strike the head...well, we know what can happen.

My Chinook was electric powered...the heli that struck this poor guy was a 700 sized one, I believe. Those rotor blades would have been travelling at a far greater speed  than my Chinook's were, and capable of doing immense damage to bare human flesh and blood.

I guess that this young pilot, expert or not, could have had that momentary loss of concentration...it's easy enough. Something catches your sight out of the corner of your eye, an insect buzzing around your head, a sudden noise somewhere, and you have that recipe for disaster.

Then there's mechanical failure, or radio problems to consider, maybe a less than fully charged battery, contaminated fuel...the list is endless.

I guess we all know that model flying is hugely satisfying, but it can be dangerous at the same time, as this unfortunate pilot found out...may he rest in peace. But if the media really get their teeth into it, I doubt he will.

The fact this made headlines indicates how rare it is for someone to be killed in this hobby. I do a lot of flying, in fact I fly far more than I use other models. i always make lightweight slow flying models, which are extremely unlikely to do anyone a mischief even in the unlikely event of it striking someone.

That IMO is the best safeguard, keep models small and modestly powered. Once you go big and fast things get dangerous, and you need to think very carefully where and how you run them.

Yep superb case and point, total reliance on electronics in a built up area, roads to either side and a public park. Definitely one for the numpty brigade.

Might be advisable to check the local bylaws, there just could be a ban on flying toy aircraft in a public park, ignorance is not an excuse.

  Regards  Ian.

And just as an addition, the posting I added shows how uncontrollable they are when 1 prop blade breaks, tell that to the bunch of girls or the kiddies parents in your shots.

I dont see what superb point you are trying to make about flying in a public park with a road either side, as for one for the numpty brigade ???
local bylaws are always checked and unless there is a spacific byelaw prohibiting flying then you are ok to fly so I am not using ignorance as an excuse
as to the video you link to yes uncontroled crash of a Quadcopter not a helecopter or a Hexcopter which uses six propelers that if 1 or two of the props fail the electronics built into the craft will allow safe flight of the craft on the remaining 4 props total reliance on electronics is not a bad thing even with roads either side of a public park.
Regards Mark

Wonder what sort of reaction one would get if you dropped a toy RC boat into the local public baths on a mixed bathing day? %)  Less directions to fail? So it must be safe  DOH!

insured property, unsteady!
when it hurts or kills a guy .................

We made a decision: to Gazouland (show similar Wickteed) we do not allow the flying objects.
neither

Only takes one what??? and having insurance which I have is not going to stop my quad crashing I dont fly silly because I have insurance and I am sure the guy who died flew in a similar vane, there have been many incident with model aircraft be they planes cars boat helecopters quadcopter and the like with a fair few injuries no dout but it wont be the last time someone is injured as long as everyone thinks and act sensibly then incidents will be reduced.
the only problem you have GAZOU is you can`t control the airspace over Gazouland so someone can take off from the field next to you and over fly your show and there is nothing that can be done as long as the person in control of the craft dosn`t break any local laws which if they do then they deserve the full force of the law comming down on them.

Regards Mark.

Mark you're right. someone can take off the field next door and make an accident, but the organizer of Gazouland not be worried.
