Title: motors and bow thrusters
Post by: baz on September 25, 2013, 10:57:54 pm
Hi all,
hoping to get some advice, I am building a large model trawler and plan on fitting Mobile Marine Models T12 motor and 12v batteries and a Raboesch 7.2v bow thruster, my question is would I need a seperate battery pack to run the thruster or would the ESC control the voltage sent to the thruster from the main batteries. Don't want to blow anything up the first time I turn it on!!
        Thanks,
                  Baz.

There is a few things you could do with this
1) do it and hope it doesn't burn out the motor..... %% ....some motors may take it others may not
2) if you are good with a multimeter measure the output from the esc and program it
To stop when it gets to 7v. Mtronics and a few other ESC's you can program to limit the maximum outputs
3) put in a 7.2v battery pack you need ballast in a trawler any way

Hope this helps

Cheers Gingyer,
think it would probably be safer and easier to go with the seperate power pack. I'll probably need about 40-50lbs of ballast to get her down to the waterline so the more batteries I put in the better!!
Thanks again,
                  Baz.

I'd just shove in 12V batteries and fit a 6(ish)V regulator for the thruster.

Cheers boys,
I've never heard of regulators before (pretty new to this), would they be fitted between the main battery and the speed controller or the speed controller and the thruster?
