Title: How do you choose a name for your Model ?
Post by: Capt Podge on October 23, 2013, 08:56:56 pm
I know that a lot of models are named after family members, particularly the females, but some totally fictional names do come about from time to time.

For instance: 1 of mine (an SHG trawler) was given the name "Aaron Dee" - this was just a play on my first initial and SWMBO's initial i.e. R and D - hence "Aaron Dee".

The registration number is also fictional BH103 = Blyth, my door number 10, and my third model 3.

Also, I have the Graupner tug Pollux but named it "Mondo" - quite simply from my son's name Raymond "Mondo" being quite common in Scotland, I believe.

Others I have seen have been named after favourite pets.

Anyone else got any ?
(with photo's if possible)

Regards,

Ray.

Most of my builds so far have been Grey Funnel so they have had their original names.  However the last two builds have been a puffer and a tug.  Both named after female family members - W'or Nettie which is my 'affectionate' name for SWMBO Geordie translation of Our Janette.  And the tug is Girl Hez which is my daughters nickname from her friends.  Next build is a tug which will also be called after my other daughter but name to be chosen.

My father had a control line racing boat called "Miss Fire" when I was a kid although I never remember him running it.  When I finished my first R/C boat I called it "Miss Fire II"

My fleet of tugs are Heighton, Denton and Tarring, all names of local villages. With luck, the next one will be Meeching, a model of the real one, which took its name from the original name for Newhaven. And there are plenty more small villages nearby, should I be allowed by SWMBO to expand the fleet!

My Cold War era sub was based upon a photo I found on the 'net...the full size was only a concept, never got any further than the drawing board, that's why I chose to build it. Rivet counters...prove me wrong!

She was named the "USS Dragonfish" after the sub that appears in the very last chapter of the book "Raise the Titanic".

For our model of a 36m Vosper Thornycroft Fast Attack Boat concept built using the original drawings we used the tradition used by Vosper Thornycroft to name one off creations.
The previous vessels were named Tenacity and Ferocity, so we decided to reflect the tradition of 'city'  part of the names with a Royal Navy traditional name and came up with 'Velocity'. Not much of a surprise when you see the model racing across Wickies lake but it was a lot better than some of the earlier names we came up with!  :}
It's pennant number is an unused number which fits between the Island class OPV and Castle class OPV vessels.

She's a wife and a woman so is she ever happy about anything? But being as we are both from the North East she gets the joke and is amused.

Hi.
While I was building 3 models for our Hav-a-go fleet the same problem arose, so we now have Hugo, Benji and Jasper our neighbours pet dogs, perhaps you could call them dog class tugs %%
