Title: RCLine / Ripmax Sea Rover Speed Controller - Instructions?
Post by: Martin (Admin) on June 15, 2007, 01:48:27 pm

Hi All,

Has anyone got the instructions for a RCLine/ Ripmax Sea Rover Electronic Speed Controller?
I've carefully put my instructions in a safe place..... hence why I need someone else's!   :-[

All I need is to know how to reset the Nuteral point. Help!

This is absolutly no help but after someone has found the instruction is the ESC any good? Sorry if it sounds a daft question but I was told they are a bit fragile.

Thanks
Daryl

I had a feeling that they were self setting, what I do know is that you only get 1/2 speed in reverse if all else fails give Howes a ring they sell them

just read the instructions from mine and it says:

Setup Procedure

You do not have to set up the unit thanks to the new function of 'Auto Setup Procedure'.
However, please do not fail to turn on the transmitter and place the throttle at 'Neutral Position' before connecting Sea Rover to the battery.

Exactly as gribeauval says.

But I can confirm that if you connect the battery the wrong way round, it will go bang.   :'(

hi there Martin

Sad to hear about your mishap...and 'rub salt in the wound' that is 20 squids down the drain but, you know what the man said at the show, you should have bought a little box with ACtion on....couple of pound more expensive, but they can be repaired  ;D

Better luck next time my mate, and if you want one, there is a spare 30 amper Electronize here if you want it - but dont forget they go bang if you get the wires mixed up on these ones, but they can be fixed.

Thanks for the plug, Bluebird!
As an amusing aside (ho, b100dy ho...) I had a message to ring a gentleman during the week, which I did (at our expense and at peak time). Conversation went along these lines:
FLJ: Hello. This is Dave at ACTion. I've a message to ring Mr XYZ about problems with a speed controller.
XYZ: Yes, that's me. Thanks for ringing back.
FLJ: Can you tell me what the problem is and which of our ESCs is involved?
XYZ: O, it's not one of YOUR speed controllers - it's a Sea Rover.
FLJ: Then can I ask why you've asked me to ring you? I know nothing about these units.
XYZ (With devastating logic): Well, the bloke in the shop where I bought it doesn't seem to know anything about them so I thought I'd ring a company that makes speed controllers - I'm sure you can put your finger on the problem..........

Do you know, I was so taken aback by the sheer cheek of the bloke that I talked him through it!

Anyway, Martin - don't forget you've got a Little Black Box with PROPER instructions in it left over from Wicksteed . Maybe you should test it to make sure it still works.  ;)

Hi ya there Dave - and one n all

Yes, I'm sad to say - its a sign of the times...if it breaks - you bin it & we, as modellers, seem to have been forced into that 'if it breaks - bin it' category (especially in electronics).

There are of course one or two manufacturers about who still produce electronics that are not mass produced by robot/machine etc.  The  customer only sees the price and he doesnt see anyone sitting at the bench (as Dave of ACtion does) assembling the components.   Each component is tested to make sure it works - and that is where the small extra cost comes in.  It does have its advantages - as Mr XYZ in your last statement has proved - I bet he couldnt ring the manufacturer of the speed controller (Sea Rover) and ask them to talk him through setting an ACtion kit up.

HMS Leeds Castle has a proper mish mash of electronics inside - Hunter mixers, ACtion switchers, Electronize speed controllers, Maplin thermal monitoring boards, home-made stabilising sensing units & Uncle Tom Cobbly and all - and all goes through an ACtion switching unit (hey how hasnt she blown up ;D) - I wonder how many off-the-shelf units that you would buy from China would handle those electronics because, as you can imagine, I have had the wires around the wrong way a good few times, ;D and all Ive had are a few melted tracks on the PC board.

So.... one and all .... next time you buy a speed controller think long and hard about aftersales etc.  Not one modeller could honestly say they have not crossed a wire wrongly.

ps Ive no connection with ACtion, apart from being a very happy customer.

Just for reference i use 2 of these in my baby Severn, they dont like running on 6v, i tried them in the Schutze but its a no go so they need 7.2 or 8.4 only and the 50% astern is a joke at times.

Still got the instruction paperwork somewhere if its still needed???

Well my speed controller has come back to life! Not a bang, more of a shutdown it seems.
I think it remembers the last transmitter input unless the transmitter is not switched on first...... should have known that!  :-\

So here I am sitting here with the motor and shaft were loose on the bench while repairing someones Ripmax Interceptor speedboat with a very impressive Tamiya Technigold motor in it - impressive!  :o

Anyway, it's one of those piano wire shafts with a brazed on screw prop adaptor at the end. On connecting up the battery, the speed controller came on at half throttle, I grabbed the control and tried to slow it down but the channel was reversed and it increased to FULL throttle. the shaft quickly distorted to an S shape of about 4 inches diameter before it escaped the coupling, flew up and hit me square in the forehead at about 100mph..... ouch!  :-[

I have three of these Sea Rovers and run them all on 6v without any problems but I agree the astern is a joke!

I think the Sea Rover ESC is more aimed and the Fast electric (FE) market as the the slow speed control is not much cop and you only get 50% astern to help prevent swapping the boat.

Ooooooow, still very sore. I bet it leaves a mark.  :(
Has anyone got any Germolene?  :P

PS according to spell check, neither of the above exist.

Jameson's? Be very careful with that stuff - it killed my grandad, you know. Gran rubbed his back with it to help his arthritis and he broke his neck trying to lick it off  :D

My uncle was died from smoking... he was run over by a Rothman's lorry.....

My other uncle died peacefully in his sleep.... unlike the people on his bus that were shouting and screaming!

OK, I'll stop now  ::)

As this is shown as being none BEC do you just leave the RX batt lead disconected when wanting to use a seperate battery supply for the receiver.
