Post by: Ted_H on November 02, 2013, 10:15:55 am
What would be the general scale size of a deck plank on a merchant ship.. ie Im building the Arran Mail form Mobile Marine in 1/35 scale. I was thinking of individual planks but even if if i draw them id still need a size

You can reasonably assume that a deck plank would be 5-6 inches wide on the full size vessel.

Thanks Colin ... And what about length, around 8ft?

I seem to remember reading something on period vessels, and a standard plank was 16ft, it might have been 12ft, but I think 16ft. This I assume is how they came out of the saw mill, and by using the full length, you do less cutting and laying.

On remembering the rule 3 planks between joints on a frame. Do not use the same length planks or you will end up with a diagonal pattern not seen on a merchant ship. And very rare on a naval vessel.  :o

How would you best suggest to joggle them, although in this model there are not large open spaces to plank.
